    The most dangerous career strategy in 2025: Following a path that worked for everyone before you. Over the last few weeks, my inbox has been flooded with messages of strife and anxiety from brilliant people blindsided by layoffs. To be honest, there is very little I can say to many. Most played the game of life perfectly. They went to great schools, got good grades, landed prestigious jobs, and worked hard. Their stories raises a critical question: What if it's not just specific jobs disappearing, but a fundamental flaw in how we've viewed careers and success? The linear world we've grown accustomed to is abruptly being disrupted. The ladders that guaranteed safety and success no longer hold their promise. For decades, we've operated under the belief that: → Business success comes from perfect execution → Career paths follow logical progression → Expertise can reliably predict the future My friend Gaetan recently said: "What if success was always more random than we wanted to believe? What if strategic planning was always more about the illusion of control than actual causality?" Navigating uncertainty now requires us to: → Judge the quality of our decisions not just results → Embrace uncertainty over false certainty → Recognize success as probabilistic For individuals navigating this shift: → Build skill portfolios, not linear paths → Combine skills uniquely; avoid single specialties → Design for uncertainty, not control → Test multiple career options → Adapt quickly; don’t chase perfection → Diversify income streams Following these principles won't just help you withstand career shocks, it makes you antifragile, allowing you to grow stronger from volatility and stress. The human cost of layoffs extends beyond financial insecurity; it's the painful realization that playing by the rules perfectly was never a guaranteed protection. Yet within this destabilizing reality lies a massive opportunity: to redefine success itself. Success shouldn't be a singular path to follow, but the freedom to create multiple paths of your own design. The true cost of clinging to old models isn't just stalling your career; it's missing the chance to discover who you might become when you stop following and start creating.

    How to Start Posting on LinkedIn (Even if You Feel Like You Have Nothing to Say) A lot of people tell me they want to start posting but feel nervous. They worry they only have a few ideas, or that they won’t be able to keep up a regular rhythm. They wonder if posting even matters for their career (spoiler: it definitely can). The truth is, you already have plenty to say, and LinkedIn is one of the easiest places to share it. Here are some practical ways to begin: 1. Share what you’re learning Talk about a course you’re taking, a podcast that gave you an “aha” moment, or a new tool you just tried. People like hearing about things they can use themselves. 2. Reflect on your work Did your team hit a small win? Did you face a challenge and learn from it? Even the behind-the-scenes of your day can be interesting. 3. Offer practical advice Post a tip that makes your job easier, or a mistake you made that others can avoid. Quick, actionable insights resonate. 4. Highlight people and relationships Celebrate a colleague, thank a mentor, or share wisdom you picked up from a recent conversation. Recognition posts build goodwill. 5. Comment on your industry React to a news story, event, or trend in your field. Share your perspective on why it matters. 6. Share your personal story How did you get into your career? What pivot shaped you? Lessons from your first job are often more relatable than you think. 7. Ask questions Invite discussion with prompts like: “What’s the tool you can’t live without at work?” or “What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out?” 8. Reuse and remix Turn a slide deck into a few posts, pull takeaways from a talk, or repost an old note with an update. You don’t always need something brand new. 9. Just have fun Tell a story about your kids, share a game you love, post about a hobby outside of work, or even something zany that made you smile. People connect with the human side of you just as much as the professional side. A lot of people say, “Posting on LinkedIn won’t get me a job.” I understand the skepticism, but here’s what I’ve seen: posting helps you get visible. Visibility leads to connections. Connections lead to opportunities. The majority of jobs are filled through networks, not cold applications, which are deadweight in this environment. Posting is not the only step, but it is a proven way to stay top of mind, alongside commenting, calls, events, and more. You don’t need to post daily. Even starting with once a week is enough. Collect ideas in a notes app as they come to you, then pick one to share. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be real. It helps me to imagine every post is just for a single close friend or loved one rather than hundreds of thousands reading it. If you post weekly, that’s 52 chances a year for people to see your voice, your ideas, and your story. That is worth it.     In 2008, Michael Phelps won Olympic GOLD - completely blind. The moment he dove in, his goggles filled with water. But he kept swimming. Most swimmers would’ve fallen apart. Phelps didn’t - because he had trained for chaos, hundreds of times. His coach, Bob Bowman, would break his goggles, remove clocks, exhaust him deliberately. Why? Because when you train under stress, performance becomes instinct. Psychologists call this stress inoculation. When you expose yourself to small, manageable stress: - Your amygdala (fear centre) becomes less reactive. - Your prefrontal cortex (logic centre) stays calmer under pressure. Phelps had rehearsed swimming blind so often that it felt normal. He knew the stroke count. He hit the wall without seeing it. And won GOLD by 0.01 seconds. The same science is why: - Navy SEALs tie their hands and practice underwater survival. - Astronauts simulate system failures in zero gravity. - Emergency responders train inside burning buildings. And you can build it too. Here’s how: ✅ Expose yourself to small discomforts. Take cold showers. Wake up 30 minutes earlier. Speak up in meetings. The goal is to build confidence that you can handle hard things. ✅ Use quick stress resets. Try cyclic sighing: Inhale deeply through your nose. Take a second small inhale. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat 3-5 times to calm your system fast. ✅ Strengthen emotional endurance. Instead of avoiding difficult conversations, hard tasks, or feedback - lean into them. Facing small emotional challenges trains you for bigger ones later. ✅ Celebrate small victories. Every time you stay calm, adapt, or keep going under pressure - recognise it. These tiny wins are building your mental "muscle memory" for resilience. As a new parent, I know my son Krish will face his own "goggles-filled-with-water" moments someday. So the best I can do is model resilience myself. Because resilience isn’t gifted - it’s trained. And when you train your brain for chaos, you can survive anything. So I hope you do the same.     Don't think of an elephant. You thought of an elephant anyway, didn't you? This experiment shows an interesting trait of our brains- We simply cannot comprehend the negativity. It's like telling someone "Don't look down" when they're standing on a high ledge. What's the first thing they will do? Look down, of course. This isn't just a cool trick. It gives us a deep understanding of how our mind works, and how it affects our everyday lives, habits, and even how we lead others. Let me break it down for you, why this matters and how we can use this knowledge to our advantage: > Goal setting: Instead of saying "I don't want to be unproductive," try "I will complete my top three tasks today." Your brain now has a clear, positive target to focus on. > In a team meeting, rather than saying "Don't miss the deadline," try "Let's aim to submit this project by Friday." This subtle shift can boost your motivation and it will give clarity. > Habit formation: Replace "Stop procrastinating" with "I'll start my work within five minutes of sitting at my desk." This will give your brain a specific, positive action to latch onto. > Stress management: Instead of telling yourself "Don't panic," try "I will take three deep breaths and focus on the solution." This will redirect your mind towards constructive action. This principle is so crucial that it's applied in high-stakes situations. Pilots are trained to focus on the runway, not on the obstacles. Parents are advised to say "Walk" instead of "Don't run." By understanding and applying this concept, we can reshape our habits, and we can improve our communication, to achieve our goals more effectively. It's not about ignoring challenges, but it’s about directing our focus towards solutions and desired outcomes. I challenge you to try this approach for a week.     I stopped writing on LinkedIn for two months. Not because I didn’t have ideas—I had plenty—but because I thought my posts weren’t good enough. Every time I sat down to write, the same questions haunted me: “Will this resonate with anyone?” “What if it sounds repetitive?” “Am I even creative anymore?” And so, I’d close the draft, convincing myself I needed more time to “perfect” it. The irony? That time only made it harder to start again. Overthinking doesn’t just waste time—it creates fear where none existed. And fear loves to linger, keeping us stuck in a cycle of inaction. It took me two months to gather the courage to hit “post” again. When I did, the response was nothing short of encouraging. That’s when it hit me: overthinking had stolen time I could’ve spent learning, improving, and connecting. Here’s what I’ve learned to fight the overthinking trap: ✨ Done is better than perfect. Share your thoughts. You’ll always have room to grow, but growth needs action. ✴️ Create, even when it’s messy. Some of the best ideas emerge in imperfection. *️⃣ Focus on impact, not approval. Write for the one person who might need to hear what you have to say.     Early in my career, I faced a moment many of us dread: A sudden, unexpected company reorganization. It seemed like overnight ➟ my role ➟ my team ➟ my daily tasks were all up in the air. I remember the anxiety. The flurry of rumors. The uncertainty. They clouded my thoughts about the future. But it was in this chaos that I found clarity. I realized that change, though daunting, also brings opportunities for growth. I wrote an article on this for Harvard Business Review. Here are 5 actions you can take when your professional life is unpredictable: 1. Embrace the Uncertainty Use periods of change as a catalyst for introspection. Reflect on what truly matters to you and your future. 2. Define Your Identity Think about who you need to be... Not just what you need to do. 3. Focus on the Process Establish and commit to positive career behaviors. It gives you a sense of control and leads to results. Examples: • Contribute in each team meeting • Expand your network every week  • Offer a strategic idea to leadership monthly • Take on a stretch opportunity once a quarter • Thank a coworker for something helpful every day 4. Cultivate Learning Agility Be ready to adapt. Stay curious. Embrace new ideas. This mindset isn't just to survive; it helps you thrive. 5. Ask for and Act on Feedback Regularly seek feedback.     In 2022, I predicted that by 2025, 60% of enterprises would actively foster socialization to combat chronic loneliness and social isolation exacerbated by digital technology. How has loneliness progressed? 🔍 Here's a snapshot according to Gallup's Global Workplace 2024 Report : 🌐 Globally, 1 in 5 employees report experiencing loneliness frequently, with those under 35 and fully remote workers most impacted. 😔 62% of employees are not engaged, while 15% are actively disengaged. 🆘 58% of employees feel they are struggling in life, with only 34% considering themselves thriving. ⚠️ 41% experience "a lot of daily stress." Loneliness and disconnection are silent problems — they often manifest as apathy, disengagement, or learned helplessness at work. So, what can we do to help? 💡 Steps to Consider: -Create a Support Network: Identify your team’s needs and implement channels to address them, such as employee assistance programs, financial planning tools, family assistance, buddy systems, communities, and ERGs. -Rethink the Work Environment: Co-design spaces for deeper relationships by mapping the employee experience and identifying changes in physical spaces, inclusive technology, and management practices. -Redesign Teams: Foster interdependence with collaboration platforms like fusion teams, cross-functional mentoring, and shadowing for problem-solving. - Recognize and Incentivize Goodwill: Acknowledge efforts with peer recognition/gratitude programs, making support visible to all. Implement an Inclusion Index: Measure fair treatment, collaboration, psychological safety, trust, belonging, diversity, and integration of differences through various feedback methods. - Train Managers: Provide managers with guidelines on the expected level of involvement in employee well-being. Train them in handling sensitive conversations, building personal connections, and evaluating mental health on a spectrum. Managers account for 70% of the variance in team employee engagement.     Conflict in teams isn’t the problem. The real issue? How it’s handled. When emotions run high, our instinct is often to argue, defend, or shut down. But there’s a far more effective approach—one used by FBI negotiators to de-escalate high-stakes situations. 💡 Try the ‘Looping Technique.’ Instead of reacting, reflect back what the other person is expressing before you respond. Example: A team member says: 🗣️ “No one ever listens to my ideas in meetings.” Instead of dismissing or debating, you may say: 🗣️ “So you feel like your input isn’t valued?” This simple shift reduces defensiveness and makes people feel heard. It also creates space for real problem-solving and psychological safety, followed by higher engagement and productivity. 🔎 In my work with high-performing teams, I see this technique transform tense moments into breakthroughs.     Most people fight objections. I turn them into leverage. Here’s what I’ve learned: Objections 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 like attacks. You feel the heat rise. You want to push back. But when you fight them, you lose control. I learned this the hard way on the streets of Glasgow. Where words were weapons, and reading people was survival. Now, I train professionals how to keep their cool, even when the boardroom feels like a pressure cooker. I’ve trained thousands of people in high-pressure roles. Here’s what works: 𝟭. 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. → Don’t take it personally → See the human behind the heat. Most people aren’t trying to provoke, they’re trying to protect something. 𝟮. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. → Ask: “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯�� 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬?” → Look for the 𝘸𝘩𝘺, not just the 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 → Get curious, not defensive 𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. → Ask: “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴?” → Explore. Don’t defend. Create space for joint problem-solving. 𝟰. 𝗥𝗲-𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. → When emotions spike, reach for facts. → Use criteria both sides recognise. Timing, risk, fairness, precedent. → Neutral ground restores calm. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 — 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲. Use lines like: → “𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘮𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.” → “𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥.” Because every time you do this, objections lose their sting. They stop being threats and start becoming tools. This works in contract disputes, boardroom deals, cross-functional stand-offs, anywhere pressure runs high. Objections become clarity. Clarity becomes leverage. And you stay in control. Objections aren’t the enemy. They’re a map if you know how to read them.
