    🎣 “They didn’t even cc me.” This was how Yumi, a senior marketing director, found out her billion-dollar product had been repositioned, without her input. The project she had been leading for 18 months was suddenly reporting into someone else. She didn’t mess up. She wasn’t underperforming. She just wasn’t "there". Not at the executive offsite. Not at the Friday “golf and growth” circle. Not at the CEO’s birthday dinner her male peer casually got invited to. She was busy being excellent. They were busy being bonded. 🍷 When she asked her boss about the change, he was surprised: “You’re usually aligned with the bigger picture, so we assumed it’d be fine.” In Workplace politic-ish: Yumi was predictable. Available. Yet not powerful enough to be consulted. 🔍 What actually happened here? Women are told to build relationships. Men build alliances. Women maintain connections. Men maintain relevance in power circles. It’s not about how many people like you. It’s about how many people speak your name when you’re not in the room. And in most companies, the real decisions - about budget, headcount, succession, are made off-the-clock and off-the-record. 📌 So, how do you stop getting edited out of influence? Try these: 1. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗽.    Not the org chart. The whisper network / shadow organistion.    Who gets invited to early product reviews?    Who influences without title?    Start mapping that!     2. 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁.    If your name hasn’t been mentioned by 3 different people in senior leadership this month, you are invisible to power, even if you’re a top performer.     3. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.    Skip the webinars and female empowerment panels.    Start showing up where strategy happens: QBRs, investor briefings, offsite planning, cross-functional war rooms.     4. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹.    Schedule recurring 1:1s with lateral stakeholders, not to “catch up,” but to co-build. Influence travels faster across than up.     5. 𝗕𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀.    If you vanished for 2 weeks and no one noticed, you’re not central enough to promote.     🧨 If any of this feels raw, it’s because it is. Brilliant women are being rewritten out of their own stories, not for lack of performance, but for lack of positioning.     I reviewed over 3,000 resumes in 4 years, here’s how you can stand out 💃🏻🕺 After reviewing more than 3,000 resumes in the past 4 years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the forgettable, from fresh grads to experienced hires with 40 years of work behind them. Whether it’s your first job or a dream role, here’s how to stand out: 1. Find the third door 🔑 Think of job applications like a nightclub. Everyone uses the main entrance, but there’s always a third door, a creative, non-traditional approach that sets you apart. Don’t rely solely on traditional methods. 2. Cold emails & DMs work 📧 Don’t wait for job postings. Reach out directly with cold emails or DMs to companies or individuals you admire. Many opportunities aren’t posted publicly. 3. Persistence is key 🔁 Don’t give up if you don’t get a reply right away. Sometimes it takes multiple follow-ups over time to reach the right person. 4. Seize opportunities quickly ⏳ When you hear of a job opportunity, even casually, act immediately. Timing and decisiveness can make all the difference. 5. Make it easy to say yes ✅ Simplify the decision for employers. Offering a trial period or showing how you can solve their problems makes it easy for them to say yes. 6. Lead with value 💡 Focus on how you can help the employer, not just what you want from the job. Show them how you can solve their challenges and contribute. 7. Go above and beyond 🎯 Consider adding a relevant work sample, a video, or ideas in your application. Small, extra efforts make a huge difference. 8. Show, don’t tell 📂 Build a portfolio. Showing your work, even small projects, is always better than just listing skills on your resume. 9. Avoid buzzwords 🚫 Skip overused terms like “team player” or “synergy.” Be specific about your achievements and back them up with measurable results. These tips aren’t just about impressing employers, they’re about showing you’re the right person for the job.     I can't tell you the last time I looked at a resume in over 12 years of hiring, and I've hired many people. It's not even a nonstarter. I don't even think about it. I know others will disagree with me, but I don't find any value in the PDF version of your LinkedIn page. I'll just go to LinkedIn. But don't despair; there are many ways to garner attention, be introduced, or stand out. 1. Follow-up notes - it's incredible how often I do not receive a follow-up message after a conversation. It's so easy to do. Here's my opinion on the best follow-up message setup: (1) Thank the person for their time. (2) Bullet point a couple of things you learned from the conversation (3) Ask a question to re-engage. Send the follow-up within an hour of the interview. Send a note to each participant if it's a group meeting or panel. IMPORTANT: If you don't get a response after your first note, could you send a couple more? People are busy, and the inbox is even busier. 2. Use video - I always appreciate it when an applicant uses Loom or another video provider to send an introduction or thank you video. It's a rare occurrence that surprises me due to its ease of use. 3. Please research the role and be sure you are a fit. Are you framing your qualifications to match what the hiring managers are looking for? Ensure you fully understand what you are applying for. 4. Research the team and understand the company. Who are your hiring manager's peers? Who else would you want to meet? If you are interviewing with the CMO, contact the CRO or VP of Sales and try to schedule a meeting. It doesn't hurt to ask. There is no excuse not to research with tools like LinkedIn available to you. 5. Get an introduction before applying - Once you research and meet a couple of people from the company, ask for an introduction. I can count on both hands how often I've received an introduction from a team member for a role I am hiring for. Even better, if you are a referral from a trusted peer, you go to the top of the list, no matter what. 6. Prepare with questions—Spend an inordinate amount of time listing out questions you want to ask the interviewer. Discuss the role expectations, but don't forget to ask questions specifically about them, such as "Why did you choose to work here?" etc. Hiring great people isn’t about resumes but connections, preparation, and effort. Don’t rely on the same old playbook if you want to stand out. Get creative, do the work, and show why you’re the best fit for the role. The good news? Most people won’t do these things. That’s your edge.

    Your competence at work is judged in seconds. Even when you over-deliver, you can be underestimated. Every day, false assumptions about you are made: — Polite = Weak — Older = Not agile — A foreign accent = Less capable — Introverted =  Not a strong leader — Woman =  Softer voice, less authority It's not just unfair. It's exhausting. So the question is: How do you beat biases without changing who you are? Here’s what I recommend: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 → Speak about impact, not effort. → Articulate your value proposition. →“Here’s the problems I solve. Here's how. Here’s the result."  If no one knows what you bring to the table, they won’t invite you to it. 𝟮. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 Silent excellence is wasted potential. → Speak up when it feels risky. → Build real not just strategic relationships. → Share insights where people are paying attention. You don’t need to be loud. You need to be seen. 𝟯. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 The traits that trigger assumptions? Those are your edge. → Introverted? That’s deep listening. → Accent? That’s global perspective. Don’t flatten yourself to fit. Distinguish yourself to lead. 𝟰. 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 → Say “I recommend” not "I think.” → Hold eye contact. Take up space. → Act like your presence belongs (even when others haven’t caught up.) Confidence isn’t volume. It’s grounding. Bias is everywhere. But perception can be changed.     If your career plan is just “wait for a promotion," that’s not a plan. That’s wishful thinking. Let me say this clearly: Promotions aren’t given. They’re earned and asked for. I’ve worked with so many smart, hardworking people who believed, “If I keep doing good work, someone will notice. One day, I’ll get that raise or title.” But here’s what actually happened: They waited. And waited. And watched someone else, sometimes less experienced, move ahead. Not because they weren’t good enough, but because they never started the conversation. Meanwhile, another client did something different: She started tracking every big win in a Google Doc, campaigns, client feedback, and numbers. Every 2-3 months, she checked in with her manager: “Here’s what I’ve delivered. What do I need to grow into a leadership role?” 14 months later, she got promoted. Remember this: – Your manager is busy. – Your HR may not see your day-to-day impact. – Your growth won’t be on anyone’s radar unless you put it there. So if you want your next step, start here: ✅ Keep a record of your wins (quantify as much as you can). ✅ Ask for clarity: “What would growth look like for me here?” ✅ Show leadership before the title, mentor someone, and own a new process. ✅ Build your brand, inside your org and online.     The secret to standing out isn’t being the best—it’s being different. You don’t need to compete with others on their terms; instead, build a unique combination of skills that only you can bring to the table. This is how you carve a path that’s uniquely yours. This is the advice I shared with young people who feel the pressure to be the “best.” Comparing yourself with others can be an exhausting downward spiral. Your uniqueness is your superpower. Rewrite the rules to work for you. When you’re starting out, carve out a niche. The more narrow it is, the easier it is to stand out and excel. Once you gain a foothold, you can broaden your skillset and expand your impact. Think of it as building a “skills stack.” The idea is simple but powerful: instead of trying to master one area, combine complementary skills from different domains. Each skill you acquire becomes a multiplier for the others. You don’t need to be the best at any single skill—being good at a unique combination is enough to make you stand out. Early in my career, I specialized as an economist. But over time, I recognized that solving complex problems required a multifaceted approach. So, I adapted: blending economics with history, financial markets with psychology, and finance with storytelling. This interdisciplinary approach allowed me to create my own game. Following my own path made work feel like a journey, not a competition. It kept me from getting lost in the trap of comparison. Start small: Choose a skill you’re curious about and think about how it could enhance what you already know. Over time, your stack will grow, making you uniquely equipped for opportunities no one else can match. The world doesn’t need more copies. It needs you, as you are.     If you want to get promoted, stop waiting for permission. Leadership is rarely handed to someone who quietly waits their turn. In my years teaching at Duke and Columbia, I saw the same pattern repeatedly. The people who advanced were not always the most credentialed, but they were often the most proactive. → They acted before they were officially ready. They proposed ideas instead of critiquing from the sidelines. They drafted plans instead of waiting for direction. They started projects instead of asking whether they were allowed. Authority tends to follow action. When you consistently behave like a leader, people begin treating you like one, even before the title appears. That means going beyond your job description. ☑️ If you see a gap, step in and fill it. ☑️ If there is confusion, bring clarity. ☑️ If something is stalled, move it forward. Promotion often comes after proof. It is also critical to build credibility beyond your company. → Publish your ideas. → Speak when you have something thoughtful to say. → Share your expertise publicly. The outside world often recognizes your leadership before your organization does.     How 3 unconventional strategies transformed my client's visibility with senior management, and the results that followed. Bhaskar*, a client of mine, a highly-accomplished senior leader aiming to become a partner at his firm, came to me for support. The reason? A crowded and competitive talent pool of high achievers, making it difficult to stand out and grow to the next level. He was also uncomfortable with self-promotion, fearing it might come across as insincere or boastful. The consistent feedback he received was that he needed to improve his visibility and stand out more to his leadership team. To tackle these challenges, we implemented 3 unconventional strategies. Why unconventional? To elevate yourself above the competition and make a lasting impression on senior leadership, think beyond the ordinary. 1. Challenge the Status Quo (Diplomatically) Senior leaders value innovation, but challenging norms can be risky. Approach it carefully - suggest improvements by framing them as enhancements to existing processes, like proposing a digital solution to replace a slow manual task. This shows you're forward-thinking without dismissing others' efforts. 2. Leverage Social Proof Internally Encourage colleagues or managers to highlight your contributions during their updates to senior leaders. For example, remind your manager to mention your key role in a project’s success during leadership meetings. Praise from others amplifies your visibility authentically. 3. Develop a “Signature” Leadership Style Create a distinct leadership style that sets you apart, like being known for turning around underperforming teams. A memorable style tied to positive outcomes makes you more recognizable and influential to senior leaders. Thanks to these strategies, Bhaskar was not only able to stand out but also secure the promotion he had been striving for. He was promoted to partner with a 35% salary increase, proving that with the right approach, visibility and recognition are within reach - even in the most competitive environments.     I am wrapping up our hiring process for our first two sales roles at Lawfully. We had over 700 applicants apply—standing out isn’t easy. For these roles I was the recruiter, hiring manager, and executive sponsor. Here’s my advice on how to stand out: Getting Through to the First Stage— 1. Reach out directly to the recruiter, hiring manager, or executive sponsor I gave priority to candidates who reached out personally. Some sent LinkedIn DMs, while others crafted thoughtful cold emails. Two memorable examples: one email had the subject line “Matt, I’m skiing my way into your inbox,” and another featured a personalized video introducing herself and addressing common interview questions. Make sure your outreach is thoughtful, creative, and mindful of people’s time. Done right, it sets you apart Done poorly, it can backfire. 2. Make your Linkedin look professional Many applicants had unprofessional profile photos, large employment gaps, or short stints at companies. While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, with 700 applicants to review, these things can quickly lead to being passed over. You control your LinkedIn narrative and the professional story it tells. Demonstrate to recruiters that you can commit and follow through. 3. Use the right professional jargon. For this SDR role, candidates with SDR experience were fast-tracked to interviews. Ensure your job titles and descriptions align with industry standards to avoid being missed. Make it clear what you do, especially if your role mirrors the position you’re applying for. Getting Through the Interview Stage— 1. Research the company before your interview. Out of 60 people I interviewed, only one could identify our competitors, and few provided detailed responses about our products and services. One candidate couldn’t name a single thing about Lawfully, while another was clearly reading straight off our homepage. Take the time to learn about the company. It shows genuine interest and sets you apart. 2. Answer all the questions. I evaluated candidates on several criteria, including experience, passion, coach-ability, and their ability to learn. To gauge learning, I asked their favorite books—professional or otherwise. If someone admitted they didn’t read, it was a quick signal to move on. 3. Answer positively and tie it back to the role and your strengths. Strike the right balance between positivity and authenticity. Candidates who dwelled on negative experiences sent a clear sign they weren’t the right fit. 4. Align your answers with company & hiring manager goals When candidates nailed this, they were an automatic pass. One standout example was a candidate who asked about our goals right at the start of the interview. Throughout the conversation, he consistently explained how he would help us reach our milestone.
