Real Talk with Don Monistere

Leadership Pivots, AI Adoption & Building a Legacy

In this episode of Real Talk, Robin Hunt sits down with Don Monistere, CEO & President of General Informatics, for a candid and wide-ranging conversation on leadership, technology pivots, AI adoption, and what it really means to leave a lasting impact.

Don has spent more than three decades in technology — from the early days of personal computers and on-prem servers to managed services, cloud transformation, and now AI. Along the way, he’s built and sold companies, led teams through major industry shifts, and learned firsthand what it takes to guide people through change.

Here is one of my favorite moments: Captain Bob? He lived a life of record and guess what Don got to make great use of it.

In this conversation, Don reflects on:

  • His earliest career pivots — including the ones driven by necessity, not choice
  • The leadership challenges of navigating change when people don’t want to change
  • How AI unexpectedly exposed bias and reshaped his thinking
  • Why some of the most important fixes leaders make aren’t technical at all
  • A powerful story about using AI to preserve legacy — known internally as “Captain Bob”
  • And the personal framework he uses to measure fulfillment, impact, and what he calls legacy impressions

This episode is thoughtful, honest, and deeply practical — especially for leaders navigating AI, workforce transformation, and uncertainty in real time.

This hits where AI adoption actually succeeds or fails: leadership, trust, and change management. Tech doesn’t transform systems; people do. If AI isn't fixing bias, culture, and decision habits, it is just automation. Legacy isn’t the tools we deploy; it is the systems and people we leave stronger.
