CompTIA Data+ Version 2: Reflections and Insights

Writing Learning materials for CompTIA Data+ Version 2: Reflections and Insights

Writing the CompTIA Data+ (Version 2) learning materials was once again a fun way to stretch myself during a time when everything is shifting. The ability to analyze data faster and at scale has never been easier — and that brings both good and bad outcomes. Going bigger and faster with bad data can lead to bigger problems.

Expanding Data Across Every Function

While developing the learning materials for the new exam objectives, I found it fascinating to see how deeply data now extends into traditional domain areas — development, security, operations, and administration. Each of these functions interacts with and revolves around the same data, just from different perspectives.

The updated version also introduces topics like Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), the creative playgrounds where development happens and Python, a language with endless libraries and integrations. Mixing in Generative AI tools and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and suddenly knowing where to put code (and sometimes not to write it) becomes a strategic skill. That’s why I love the added focus on end-user testing and quality metrics — because functionality matters most when it works.

Who It’s For

This certification targets skills and competency for professionals performing data analysis within their organizations. The job title this exam targets is for sure a “Data Analyst.” The reality is a broader number of job roles perform basic data analysis all the time. If you’re an operations professional, you don’t need to master every detail — but exposure matters. This curriculum helps you see how data, spreadsheets, databases, and collaborative knowledge can elevate your daily work. Even if you never take the exam, you’ll come away with valuable skills and perspective.

And for those looking to prove competencies or advance into new roles — the certification is your next step.

Organizational Importance of Data+

CompTIA Data+ bridges technical and non-technical worlds through a shared language — data. It’s designed to be vendor-neutral and tools-agnostic, while still providing hands-on exposure to popular tools and workflows.

When writing this curriculum, I focused on teaching core concepts and critical thinking over tools themselves. Because once you understand why and how something works, the specific tool becomes secondary. That mindset drives performance — and keeps professionals adaptable in a changing landscape.

Organizational Questions:

Where do you want your teams to be on the data fluency spectrum?

Are there professionals that learning Data + will lead to better performance and productivity? Spoiler alert: Yes.

Or are they future analysts, security professionals, or operations experts pursuing certification for career growth?

What’s Inside Data+ V2

As you read through these domains, they may seem intimidating or, in some cases, you may think your team doesn’t need them. I can assure you that’s not true. They may not all be equally important to your specific job role, but you are impacted by all of them in performing any job function. And what if you found out your team didn’t need these skills? They needed something before it or even after it? All knowledge is power.

The list below represents the domains and the percentage of the exam that is focused on these areas. These concepts and topics can take a non-technical professionals (which I don’t believe there is such a thing there is just levels) and bring them up to speed in the every data mining and cleaning which we know is a large portion of the job with tools they can easily access these days through all the infrastructure investments you have made.

What’s next for me?

I am working diligently on bringing more content and education in artificial intelligence so that we can all ride this next wave together.
