Stradley Ronon partnered with legal tech company vLex this week to host its first ever hackathon in Philadelphia, bringing together a group of approximately 30 attorneys and staff to pitch ideas on how to best use AI to streamline practice workflows. “We found a way to make it fun and exciting and prove to [participants] that it was worth their time," said Sarah Hirebet (Andrews), Stradley’s director of knowledge management. "And lawyers are skeptical, so it takes serious dedication to finding the way to do it right and to create that kind of enthusiasm." Reporter Amanda O'Brien also spoke with Anusia Gillespie, enterprise lead at vLex, to find out more about what participants did during the event and how they're pushing lawyers to learn the technology. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gq5Jjd36

One more thing that struck me was that most legal tech solutions looked very much the same. Do we need more innovation within the innovative space?

The future of LegalTech showed up today at TECH WEEK by a16z. AI isn't just changing legal. It's redefining what in-house teams can actually accomplish. That was the through-line at our panel today, with Mitzi Chang (Goodwin), Rex Salisbury (Cambrian), Mike Wu (Carta), and Noah Small (SimpleClosure), who unpacked where this is all heading. Shoutout to Kelly Soderlund for moderating and to everyone who showed up ready with questions. Missed it? Check out the highlights and catch us next week for three more events at #LATechWeek!

We hosted our #SFTechWeek Future of LegalTech Panel with Mitzi Chang (Goodwin), Michael Wu (Carta), Rex Salisbury (Cambrian), and our very own Noah Small (SimpleClosure). Big thanks to SVB for the space and to our friends at Carta for sponsoring. LegalTech is evolving fast, but what came through in this conversation was how human the shift still is. 💡 A few takeaways that stood out: - AI is augmenting, not replacing. It's taking the repeatable, low-value work off lawyers' plates so they can focus on strategy, negotiation, judgment and relationships. - Trust is currency. Law firms are experimenting, but "80% right" doesn't fly in legal. Tools must be reliable, compliant, and integrated into review processes before firms adopt at scale. - Partnerships > disruption. The most impactful products don't replace lawyers, they complement them. Carta and SimpleClosure both grew by working with law firms, not around them. - Budgets are tightening. Law firms have pilot fatigue. They will consolidate around tools that demonstrably save time, reduce risk, and improve workflows. - Training is being redefined. Automation can't replace judgment, so law firms have to rethink how junior talent learns as automation scales. For us, it was affirming to see how much alignment there is between founders, investors and law firms on one thing: making complex legal processes simpler, faster, and more transparent for clients. That's the heart of what we're building at SimpleClosure — a trusted layer for the dissolution process that bridges technology, compliance, and care. Grateful to everyone that joined the discussion and can't wait for our next on at #LATechWeek! TECH WEEK by a16z
