When it comes to web accessibility, we can always use a refresher – and Amit Aggarwal is here to help. As the founder and principal consultant at Accessibility Partners Canada, an Ontario-based firm that provides industry-leading remediation services, Amit leads a team of accessibility professionals that supports both government and private sector customers. In his guest post on CMS Critic, Amit reminds us that the consequences of overlooking accessibility go far beyond simple usability issues. He outlines the hidden costs of ignoring it, from legal implications to increased maintenance costs. He also reinforces the common things we miss – and how humans are still the best resource for validation. Along with providing some actionable steps, Amit echoes what I’ve frequently heard at industry conferences: We’re still not approaching accessibility at a foundational level. This was true even at the recent Boye & Company CMS Connect 25. “Treat accessibility as a requirement, not an afterthought, in design and development cycles,” he says. And he couldn’t be more right. Web Accessibility (A11y) has 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 been an afterthought when building digital products. It's part of the foundations, something we 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧, 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭, and 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 throughout the entire process because it makes the experience better for 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦. With the European Accessibility Act (EAA) already in place it's important to make sure that your digital products are working correctly or at the very least, demonstrate clear progress towards compliance. That's where we can help. Accessibility isn't a feature - 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. Read our latest article on EAA and why it's important for your business and brand. https://lnkd.in/e9ac4kG8

WCAG-EM is a process for evaluating accessibility. Especially great for larger websites, where it isn't feasible to evaluate every single page, but you still want meaningful insight into the product's overall accessibility. At the Dutch government, this is what powers our accessibility dashboard for government websites (https://lnkd.in/ehpV6JPa), a substantial part of the ~9000 sites on there claim a specific status backed up by a WCAG-EM-based evaluation. We (me, Steven Faulkner and Jeroen Hulscher) are working on WCAG-EM 2.0 to: - make the scope broader (from just websites to any digital product) - make it more readable - bring it up to date (it mentions _design systems_ now) WCAG-EM 2 preview: https://lnkd.in/eVrQnpvp

"Accessibility isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about reducing friction for real people." So, how do we achieve the most accessible digital experience possible for as many people as possible? WCAG is part of the picture, but is there more we need to do to go beyond performative web accessibility compliance? Tina Reymann presents a deeper approach: https://lnkd.in/eMUygUTy #WCAG #WebAccessibility #UserExperience

Everyone understands that people that use mobility devices such as crutches and wheelchairs need buildings to be accessible. However, people with sensory issues such as vision and hearing impairment, low muscle tone and neurodivergence also have accessibility issues. Digital accessibility issues. We all need to do better by considering these people as well.
So, the Do Better Campaign is a coalition of businesses trying to push a message out there about creating more awareness of WCAG accessibility and digital accessibility. David Oram Atomic Web Strategy #DigitalAccessibility #TheDigitalAccessShow #DASAT #DoBetter

Web accessibility isn’t optional—it’s law. The DOJ’s new Title II Web Accessibility Rule officially sets deadlines for all state and local government websites and apps to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. What this means: → If your organization serves 50,000+ people, compliance is due by April 24, 2026. → If your organization serves under 50,000, you have until April 26, 2027. These standards ensure that websites, apps, and digital services are accessible to people with disabilities—covering everything from navigation and media captions to forms and PDFs. Even if you’re not a public entity, this rule is setting the new national benchmark for accessibility compliance—one that private organizations will soon be expected to follow. So, the question is: → Are you confident your website meets accessibility standards? If not, let accesszanü help. We specialize in Digital Accessibility Audits & Remediation, ensuring your site aligns with WCAG 2.1 AA and beyond—so your organization stays compliant, inclusive, and ahead of the curve.
