TetraLogical's role in web accessibility standards

WCAG-EM is a process for evaluating accessibility. Especially great for larger websites, where it isn't feasible to evaluate every single page, but you still want meaningful insight into the product's overall accessibility. At the Dutch government, this is what powers our accessibility dashboard for government websites (https://lnkd.in/ehpV6JPa), a substantial part of the ~9000 sites on there claim a specific status backed up by a WCAG-EM-based evaluation. The new 2025 Digital Accessibility Index shows a worrying pattern: many companies still struggle with the basics — navigation, readability, usability. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿? That’s what happens when you try to wing it with web accessibility. You might want to make your website great for users with visual impairments, but accidentally make it harder, particularly for people with low vision or color blindness. 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: A form only shows an error in red text, so you add 𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮-𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲="polite" to the element so that screen readers announce the error message when it pops up. great for blind users ✅ But how about someone with low vision? Or red-green color blindness? Without sufficient color contrast, the error message looks like every other text on the web page and gets overlooked, leaving your user confused about why they cannot submit their form. Eventually, they leave your website for a more accessible provider. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: Accessibility isn’t just a checkbox. A fix for one group doesn’t automatically help everyone. True inclusion means designing for 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲. WCAG 3.0 is bound to change the way we assess web accessibility. W3C Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 3.0 supports a wide set of user needs, uses new approaches to testing, and allows frequent maintenance of guidelines and related content to keep pace with accelerating technology changes. The newer version supports this evolution by focusing on the *functional needs* of users. These needs are then supported by guidelines that are written as outcome statements, requirements, assertions, and technology-specific methods to meet those needs. The guideline itself is answering the only issue it as a set of guidelines has had: the cognitive load it takes to process the content. I'm fascinated and eager to see the refined version. This is a good step.

You can think about #webaccessibility in the end, on the final delivery. As for an unnecessary point, that is requested by law and is some "suitcase without a handle". The truth is more complicated. Yes, maybe you won't feel the effect of accessibility of your product immediately. But wait a minute.. 1. The effect can be longer, but new customers will come unexpectedly. 2. Your competitors possibly have to implement web accessibility too, so this is not your pain only 3. You learn not to implement accessibility only. You learn the semantic code. 4. And empathy.
