Logical fallacies are super important to learn because: 1. They help you spot faulty reasoning in arguments from politicians, ads, or anyone else. 2. Understanding them sharpens your critical thinking and argument skills, making your discussions clearer and stronger. 3. They protect you from being misled by persuasive but illogical claims, boosting your ability to evaluate info fairly. 4. Learning fallacies also improves communication and promotes fair, just conversations in daily life. So basically, knowing fallacies makes you smarter, more persuasive, and less tricked by bad logic.

To maintain the authenticity of ideas (genuine ideas), focus on clear and concise communication. The main challenge is avoiding translation bias when ideas move from policymakers to the public (civil society). Ensure that the philosophical foundation and the core objective of the idea are understood by every messenger. Use straightforward and analogical language to bridge the gap between government jargon and everyday language. Communication training (communication skills) should focus on the ability to summarize without losing the essence, ensuring the integrity of the message remains intact from source to recipient.

One of the most powerful tools we can cultivate in any professional or academic environment is Nonviolent Communication — the ability to listen, understand, and respond with empathy and clarity. In academic settings, where diverse perspectives and constant pressures coexist, mediation becomes more than a skill — it’s a bridge. It connects students, faculty, and administration through understanding rather than reaction, and through dialogue rather than conflict. Throughout my experience in higher education, I’ve witnessed how a good intermediary can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. When communication flows with respect and intention, the entire academic cycle becomes more fluid, productive, and human. A mediator’s role is not just to solve problems, but to create a safe and collaborative space where everyone feels heard and valued. In this space, learning thrives — and so do people. Because at the heart of every great institution, there’s not just structure or knowledge — there’s connection.

There’s a difference between being smart and being understood. Too often, academics talk over the heads of the people their work is meant to serve. If your research can’t be explained in plain language, it isn’t powerful communication; it’s just noise dressed up as intellect. To my academic colleagues, this isn’t a jab at you personally. Please learn from it. I was, and in many ways still am, someone outside academia trying to make sense of our language. Sometimes, when we use overly technical or exclusive language, it can come across as bullying to someone who doesn’t understand what we’re saying. Non-academics aren’t paid to read and decode dissertations. They’re looking to you to bridge that gap and to make knowledge accessible without watering it down. That’s not lowering the bar, that’s raising the impact.

In That Order The late MIT professor Patrick Winston once said: “Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas – in that order.” Most people assume success depends on how smart you are or how good your ideas are. But Winston – a computer scientist – put communication first. That’s because speaking and writing are the way your ideas spread. If you can’t express your thinking clearly, your ideas won’t land. If you can’t make others care, it doesn’t matter how brilliant your insight is – it will go unnoticed. Great ideas are essential. But they don’t speak for themselves. Why communications that don't account for the mental states of the recipient and the speaker are socially inefficient? Because they are de-contextualized. Context matters in some circumstances and it matters a lot in social interactions. Object or pattern recognition is not enough. We must contextualize the object. This means that we extract meaning of a particular stream of data from our perceptual system in the here and now of our mental state and the state of the world (including the state of the person we talk to). This state-dependent learning can have a profound impact on the outcome. The same exact stimulus perceived in the state of anger or fear will not mean the same thing as it would have when we are calm. This is one of the deficits in LLMs. Zero social context. No non-verbals, tone, prosody, no idea about the state of the person asking the question. Michael Levin talks about how when we use our memory, we do not actually have access to the past, we have access to a memory engram, which is compressed information from the past. We interpret this compressed information in the here and now - we construct meaning of it in the current context. The same applies to the human communications. A phrase we hear from another person is a compressed message. We de-compress and interpret it depending on the state we are in (as we perceive that) and the state of the world (including the state of another person, as we perceive that). Your legacy isn’t what you know. It’s what others can repeat because of you. Years ago, I gave a lecture at the vet school in Paris. It was about infections and reproduction. I listed causes, symptoms, mechanisms…  Every scientific detail! By the end, the audience looked tired. One person said, “That’s nice to know.” Translation: “I have no idea what to do with this.” I’d been speaking for myself, not for them. That comment changed everything. I stopped building presentations for myself. I started building them for the listener. If I could advise my younger self today: 1. Simplicity multiplies impact. 2. Teaching is translation, not recitation. 3. Start from what your audience already knows. 4. Show them why before how. 5. Replace complexity with clarity, not with emptiness. 6. One clear example beats ten data points. 7. Never aim to impress - aim to empower. 8. Feedback matters more than applause. 9. Measure success by the actions they take after you speak. 10. And remember: when done right, mastery is invisible. Complexity builds walls. Clarity builds legacy. This applies to any field where knowledge meets people.
