In That Order The late MIT professor Patrick Winston once said: “Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas – in that order.” Most people assume success depends on how smart you are or how good your ideas are. But Winston – a computer scientist – put communication first. That’s because speaking and writing are the way your ideas spread. If you can’t express your thinking clearly, your ideas won’t land. If you can’t make others care, it doesn’t matter how brilliant your insight is – it will go unnoticed. Great ideas are essential. But they don’t speak for themselves. You do. #PresentationSkills #PublicSpeaking #CommunicationSkills --- Quick heads-up – On October 15, I’m running a free session on how to help your team communicate with more impact. 這學期在《Public Speaking and Debate》課程中,我完成了一場Persuasive Speech練習,並很開心獲得教授的肯定與鼓勵!✨ (This semester, in my Public Speaking and Debate course, I completed a Persuasive Speech practice and was delighted to receive recognition from my professor!) (Present a well-researched argument demonstrating critical thinking and effective use of evidence. Choose a clear position and critically analyze the topic, e.g., greenwashing vs. effective carbon pricing.) 2️⃣ 三大說服核心|Core Persuasive Appeals ✅ LOGOs – 邏輯與理性|Logic and Reason:用統計、研究、案例、專家證詞支持論點 ✅ ETHOs – 可信度與信任|Credibility and Trustworthiness:建立權威與可靠性 ✅ PATHOs – 情感|Emotion:激發觀眾情緒,使論點更具說服力 3️⃣ 演講結構|Speech Structure 📍 開場|Introduction:以情感吸引注意(PATHOs) 📍 主體|Body:用邏輯與可信度呈現論證(LOGOs & ETHOs) 📍 結尾|Conclusion:以情感呼籲作結,引導行(PATHOs) _ 這次練習讓我加強台上表達與自信,也學會清楚呈現論點。仍有進步空間,例如避免 Logical Fallacies,我會持續磨練自己的說服力。 (This practice strengthened my stage presence and confidence while teaching me to present arguments clearly. There is still room for improvement, such as avoiding Logical Fallacies, and I will continue refining my persuasive skills.) _ #PublicSpeaking #PersuasiveSpeech #CriticalThinking #PresentationSkills

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a research talk presentation organized by STEM for Development. The session provided insightful lessons on effective presentation skills, emphasizing the importance of knowing your audience- understanding their background, interests, and expectations to tailor your message—and managing the audience by maintaining engagement, handling questions thoughtfully, and guiding attention throughout the talk. A key takeaway was the need to value the economics of words, which means expressing ideas clearly, precisely, and concisely to keep your message impactful. The talk also reviewed the major components of a research presentation, including the title, introduction, specific area of focus, methodology, and conclusion, and discussed strategies for effectively formatting and delivering each section. It was an engaging and informative experience that strengthened my ability to communicate research with clarity and confidence. #STEMforDevelopment #ResearchTalk #PresentationSkills #ProfessionalGrowth

Corporate-Speak: Worshipping Jargon Since Forever In 2025, apparently we’ve collectively decided that the best way to communicate is through sacred corporate-speak. Case in point: an upcoming talk advertised as: "The presentation highlights the impact of the skills gap on productivity, innovation, and competitiveness, and proposes actionable solutions that focus on industry–education partnerships and continuous upskilling programs." Translation for mere mortals: “The talk explains how not having enough skilled workers hurts companies and how schools and businesses can work together to fix it.” Somehow, piling on buzzwords is supposed to make the content feel more important, more elevated, more… profound. But here’s the truth: it’s just noise. The purpose of a talk is to communicate an idea, not to show off how many long, impressive-sounding words the speaker can string together—words we would never actually use in normal conversation. Clarity, relevance, and human connection get buried under layers of “strategic alignment” and “actionable insights,” leaving the audience exhausted, not enlightened. People don’t normally speak like this. So please, let’s stop pretending jargon is wisdom. Engage like humans. Share ideas clearly. Respect the audience. #CorporateSpeak #PlainLanguage #SkillsGap #CommunicationMatters #WorkplaceHumor

Your legacy isn’t what you know. It’s what others can repeat because of you. Years ago, I gave a lecture at the vet school in Paris. It was about infections and reproduction. I listed causes, symptoms, mechanisms… Every scientific detail! By the end, the audience looked tired. One person said, “That’s nice to know.” Translation: “I have no idea what to do with this.” I’d been speaking for myself, not for them. That comment changed everything. I stopped building presentations for myself. I started building them for the listener. If I could advise my younger self today: 1. Simplicity multiplies impact. 2. Teaching is translation, not recitation. 3. Start from what your audience already knows. 4. Show them why before how. 5. Replace complexity with clarity, not with emptiness. 6. One clear example beats ten data points. 7. Never aim to impress - aim to empower. 8. Feedback matters more than applause. 9. Measure success by the actions they take after you speak. 10. And remember: when done right, mastery is invisible. Complexity builds walls. Clarity builds legacy. This applies to any field where knowledge meets people. And the people who make things clear are the ones who truly move the field forward. PS: What’s a lesson you learned the hard way about communicating complex ideas?

“Let’s circle back.” “Adding value.” “Low-hanging fruit.” These phrases sound smart… until they don’t. Corporate speak is everywhere. But it’s slowly killing clarity—and trust. When messaging is full of jargon, readers tune out. Or worse, they misinterpret the message entirely. According to a recent study by Preply, 46% of professionals say jargon makes communication harder, not easier. Think about that. Nearly half of your audience may not fully understand you. Here’s how to avoid that trap: Cut the clichés. Instead of “circle back,” say “follow up next week.” Instead of “value-add,” say what the actual benefit is. Use plain language. If a high schooler wouldn’t get it, rewrite it. Clarity is more persuasive than complexity. Test your writing. Read it aloud. If it sounds like a robot, rewrite it like a human. Clear communication builds trust. Jargon builds walls. What’s one overused phrase you’d love to retire from business communication? #Leadership #CommunicationSkills #WorkplaceCulture #B2BMarketing #ProfessionalDevelopment

My Learnings from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) From Government Orders to Emails – Communication Defines Everything As a Public Policy student, I often find myself comparing how decisions flow in government vs how they flow in corporate spaces. In government offices, everything moves through a Government Order (GO) — a single document that turns intent into action. It’s official, binding, and shapes how policies come alive. Every word in a GO matters because it sets direction and accountability. In the corporate world, that same weight often rests on something we take for granted — a well-crafted email. A simple line in an email can shift strategy, influence decisions, or clarify what’s expected of teams. In both spaces, one clear message can move mountains (or stall progress if it’s unclear). It’s interesting to see how communication stands at the center of execution, whether it’s governance or business. The formats may differ, but the essence is the same — clear, thoughtful communication builds trust, alignment, and momentum. So next time you hit “send” or draft that GO, pause for a second — that message might just shape outcomes more than you think. #PublicPolicy #CorporateCulture #Communication #Leadership #PolicyLearning #StudentPerspective

If you can't explain it to a 10-year-old, you don't know it well enough. (A professional truth). I spend a lot of time translating complex processes—whether it's the steps for international university admission or the mechanics of a new digital marketing platform—into clear, simple communication. The real challenge isn't learning the jargon; it's learning to eliminate it. The moment a client (or colleague) loses focus, the message is lost. I've realized that the greatest experts are the ones who can break down complexity into a single, compelling action or idea. Simplicity is a measure of mastery. What is the most complex concept in your industry that you’ve had to work hard to simplify for clients or customers? #CommunicationSkills #MarketingStrategy #Simplicity #ProfessionalDevelopment #ClarityOverComplexity #YoungProfessional

Smart people don’t use BIG words… Some of the most intelligent public speakers I’ve met are able to explain big ideas with plain words. 50% of the U.S. cannot read above a fifth-grade level. What this means: it’s better to break things down into simple explanations. Ironically, this makes you more articulate! Give it a try! #publicspeaking #articulation #communication
