Andrea Pacini shared thisA few years ago, Ciaran O'Donnell and I started working together 1:1. He was already a strong communicator, but he wanted to go further. So he did something most people don’t do. He showed up. Every week. For years. He tested ideas. Tried new approaches. Asked for feedback. Applied it. Then came back and did it again. No shortcuts. Just consistent work. Today, he’s one of the strongest communicators I know. In fact, we reached a point where I don’t feel I have much left to teach him. And that’s the goal. Now, my role is different. I create the space for him to keep practising. To keep refining. To get feedback not just from me, but from a community that challenges and supports him. Andrea Pacini posted this𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 Potential clients remember your message once you boil it down to one lesson. A crow once found a piece of cheese and perched on a branch to eat it. A fox, eager to snatch it, flattered the crow’s voice. Wanting to prove himself, the crow opened his beak to sing – and dropped the cheese. The lesson is simple: don’t fall for empty praise. Every fable ends with one clear truth. If your talk had to be told that way, what would the moral be? That test forces you to clarify what really matters. A fable doesn’t list ten morals. It leaves you with one. The same is true for a good talk. A presentation should be based on one big idea – the single truth you want your audience to carry with them. If your talk were a fable, what’s the one lesson at the end? Andrea Pacini posted this𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗛𝗮𝗱 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗢𝗻𝗲 In 1945, a young mathematician named George Dantzig arrived late to class at Berkeley. On the blackboard were two equations. Thinking they were homework, he copied them down and solved them after a few days of work. What he didn’t know was that they were famous unsolved problems in statistics. His “late homework” became a published paper. That single story captures more than pages of theory about problem-solving and the power of not knowing something is impossible. If your talk had to be told through one story alone, which story would you choose? One story works like a distillation. It pushes you to strip your message down to its core. If the story alone can’t carry it, maybe the message isn’t clear enough. The right story is strong enough to stand on its own. It holds the big idea together. We often feel we need many stories, but sometimes, one is enough. One story can contain everything. Andrea Pacini shared thisOne of the events I’m most proud of. Yesterday we hosted Terry Szuplat for "Say It Well – Live in London". We’ve done many things over the years, but this one felt special. I loved the energy in the room. Great questions, great conversations, and the chance to connect in person with people I’ve worked with for years. It was great to see some of our clients and people from my network there – Sarah Farmer, David Pitchford, Dipak Davé, Masako, Chris Robinson, Katerina Guseva, Alastair Morris, Serena Sabala, Jan Jilis van Delsen, Kath Reynolds, Lynda Funke (and many others) – and to finally meet some of you face to face. One idea that stayed with me from Terry’s talk: There’s no such thing as a natural speaker. Not even for Obama. If you want to become a great speaker, the key is preparation. I care about this work because I see too many great ideas fail just because of how they’re presented. I want to change that. Terry – thank you. You were amazing, and it was an honour to host you. Thank you to Phil Waknell, Riccardo Marchionni, Xavier Treacher, Steve Hammal and the team at Scale Space (Sodrul Hussain, Maisie Jack), for your support in making this happen. Andrea Pacini posted this𝗔 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 On December 14, 1911, Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole. After years of planning and weeks of brutal conditions, he marked the moment in his journal with a brief line: “So we arrived, and were able to raise our flag at the geographical South Pole [...] Thanks be to God!” Just a simple statement that left others to reflect on what it meant. That’s a reminder for how some talks should end. I’m a big advocate of giving the audience something to do. Most of the time, a clear call to action is essential. But not always. Sometimes the most powerful conclusion isn’t a task but a thought. A final image or idea strong enough to stay with people after they’ve left. Something they replay later, shaping how they think. A task may guide what they do next.
