On Tuesday, the Art Institute of Chicago announced its acquisition of a study for The Dugout (1948) by Norman Rockwell. Donated by former governor of Illinois Bruce Rauner and Diana Rauner, it will be the first work by that artist in the museum’s collection. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5vddx9M

I found this study in a trash can on the curb at a estate in Philadelphia. I believe it’s by a Art Professor at the Tyler School of Temple University.

1moIt matters that the acquisition is a study. In a culture obsessed with the polished final object, choosing the preparatory sketch feels like a clear institutional statement. It shifts attention from the image as a commodity to the thinking that produced it. Really strong addition to the collection
