Sarah Young posted thisI have come to believe that two of the most essential qualities we can hire for — whether for a senior member of our executive team, or for a caretaker for a child or aging loved one: Emotional maturity and a sense of inner resiliency. If we have these things, nearly anything is possible: hard conversations, solving challenges together, being part of “one team,” in service of a greater mission. If we don’t, nearly everything is harder: having open and direct conversations, tackling challenges as “we” versus “me,” and thinking in the context of the greater good. I also find that these qualities can be hard to *really* assess in the hiring process. I like pointed reference checks, a paid trial or project where we can see the person in action (if applicable and relevant for the role), and very specific interview questions without any positive bias applied. That said, even the most robust hiring process in the world might not successfully vet emotional volitility, a lack of resiliency, or other drama-inducing behaviors that show up under pressure (but not necessarily in the interview process). What systems, structures, or processes do you use in the hiring process to assess these qualities? Helen is one of the best writers I know — her writing is both witty and wise. Writing a book is an offering. A way of saying, in Seth Godin’s words, “here, I made this for you.” Helen made this for us. How lucky are we?Sarah Young shared thisI have never truly paid attention to book covers before. I love books and I am always drawn to certain cover designs, but I never thought much about WHY. It wasn’t until I had to think about what I wanted my own book to convey that I really paid attention. And then I couldn’t stop looking. Both in my HR career and my coaching work, I have always loved helping people explore their career paths and consider what’s possible. But often when people think about adjusting aspects of their job or changing careers, it can feel heavy, hard, and — quite frankly — off-putting. I wanted this book, which is all about fulfillment and joy, to feel quite the opposite from the first glance. I chose orange because it’s vibrant, fun, and inviting — a burst of energy drawing you in. The colour was the easy part! The rest of the design was a bit of a mystery at first, but I knew I wanted it to communicate joy, hope, and elegance. Sheila Parr, you did an incredible job of transforming the concept of career exploration and ideation into the final blooming flower motif, with this gorgeous soft font. Sarah Young shared this"How do I lead well through this — when I don't know how it ends, or where this is going?" This, in some form, is a question many of us are grappling with right now, especially as the way we work is rapidly changing before our eyes. 👀 Here's what I've observed: We don't need certainty to lead effectively. Instead, we can get clear on what doesn't change — our values, our north star, the kind of leader we want to be — and lead from that, even when everything around us is shifting. Agility isn't the absence of a plan. It's the ability to stay anchored to what matters while remaining light on our feet about everything else. And courage in these moments doesn't necessarily need to be a bold proclamation or a sweeping pivot. It might be: 💭 A hard conversation that needed to happen. ✔️A decision made with incomplete information. 💗An honest acknowledgment to our team that we don't have all the answers but that we are in it together. When I was 22 and in new employee orientation, we were taught something that has stuck with me ever since: When asked a question by a client to which we didn't know the answer, we were taught to say, "I'm not sure, let me write that down and get back to you by [fill in the date]." Right now, it feels like we have a collective opportunity to do just that...to acknowledge that we aren't sure, but that together we will figure it out. Sarah Young shared this4 years ago this week, Expansive Impact was making its way out into the world! 💫 So grateful for everyone who has read a copy, gifted a copy, recommended it to a friend, or written a positive review. I've especially loved seeing all of the places Expansive Impact has traveled over the past several weeks on Spring Break —beaches in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina, to name a few. 🏝️ Here's a quick summary of the key ideas: Be Compassionate — Lead with Love. Connection happens in the micromoments: the "good mornings," the 1,440 minutes we have in a given day. Compassion is strength. We can be soft and strong like water - gentle and flowing but also the greatest force. Be Conscious — Lead from Within. Look through the mirror, not the window. Leadership starts with self-awareness, values clarity, and knowing our natural style and approach. Be Clear — Lead in Relationship to Reality. To lead effectively, we need to check our assumptions, fact-check our stories, clarify expectations explicitly, and create clear containers. Be Curious — Lead by Listening for Clues. Practice expansive listening, ask better questions, take a coach approach, and embrace curiosity over certainty. Be Courageous — Lead with Truth from the Heart. Embrace discomfort, invite discourse, create psychological safety, be specific, and be willing to walk away when integrity demands it. Be Creative — Lead with Agility. Zoom up, take the helicopter view, swim with the current, take the third path, and create from this moment — being anchored to what matters while also being light on our feet. Sarah Young shared thisHappy Earth Month! 🌎 Zing Collaborative is proud to be a member of 1% for the Planet, which means that each year, 1% of all sales are donated to approved nonprofits that are working to protect people and planet. Something that fascinated me a few years ago when I went to the 1% for the Planet conference in NYC was that the majority of 1% for the Planet businesses are small and mid-sized companies. There were few exceptions (for example, TUMI and OXO - I now always try to buy OXO kitchen products when possible!). One simple thing that any of us can do, if looking for an easy way to give back via purchases or partnerships, is to search the 1% for the Planet directory for business members, as a place to start (link to search feature within the first comment of this post). Sarah Young shared thisAs leaders, we often find ourselves living and leading in the liminal phase—the place in between. We lead our teams from the old toward the new. We lead our team members from their time as a new professional toward their first promotion. We lead our colleagues from the difficult questions toward the possible paths forward. It feels like we are in one of those liminal phases right now, as the future of work is shifting before our eyes, and as we grapple with how (and if) to integrate AI into our workplaces. Some tools we can lean on during this liminal time: —Curiosity. Staying open and curious about what is unfolding. —Our Values. If we are considering rolling out new tools or structures or AI initiatives, do they align with our values? Do they support us to live out these values in action? –Our Vision. What will help us get there? And, are we making decisions because they will lead us toward our vision, or because everyone else is doing these things and we feel like we need to do them to? -Our Culture. Does this decision or initiative help us be more like ourselves in our best moments? A few we can consider. What else would you add? Have you read Cheryl Strayed's piece: The Ghost Ship that Didn't Carry Us? One of my favorite pieces of all time about the choices we do not make and the paths we do not take, and it comes to mind via this question you posed "How different would life have looked if I'd stayed?" A beautiful concluding quote from the piece: "I’ll never know and neither will you of the life you don’t choose. We’ll only know that whatever that sister life was, it was important and beautiful and not ours. It was the ghost ship that didn’t carry us. There’s nothing to do but salute it from the shore." Takes my breath away every time, even after reading it so many times over the years, as I've pondered various decisions and choices. Hope that you had a wonderful time in Austin!
