When students understand their strengths, explore real opportunities, and experience the world of work, something powerful happens. They stop asking, “What should I do someday?' and start asking 'What steps should I take next?'” That shift from possibility to purpose is what career-connected learning is all about. Being surrounded by the expertise and tremendous brainpower of colleagues across various functions was inspiring. Listening to the work that has been occurring is proof that when people with different perspectives and strengths come together with a shared purpose, amazing things can happen. What stood out to me most wasn’t just the work. It was the people. I had the chance to make new friends, reconnect with colleagues I admire, and spend time with individuals whose talent and passion for this work is truly inspiring. Moments like these remind me that great work happens because of people who care deeply about what they do and who they do it with. When we monitor student work with purpose, we’re not just collecting answers—we’re uncovering ideas, misconceptions, and strategies that help the entire class grow.Dr. Twana Young shared this𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀: Those who fish. And those who hunt. Let me explain. I once observed a math classroom during discussion time. The teacher asked: “Who wants to share?” “Did anyone get something different?” Three hands went up. The same three students. They shared correct answers. The class nodded. We moved on. It looked smooth. But nothing was intentionally surfaced. No misconception was leveraged. No strategy was strategically sequenced. Because the teacher was 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 🎣 Cast the line. 🎣 Wait. 🎣 Hope something useful bites. Sometimes you catch something strong. But hope is not a strategy. During our coaching debrief, I asked her one question: “How will you decide who advances the math tomorrow?” Silence. So we mapped it out. Before the lesson, we clarified: ✅ What strategy needed to surface first ✅ Which misconception would likely emerge and her response ✅ What partial understanding could push thinking forward We created a simple monitoring tracker. Not to collect answers. But to collect thinking. The next time she facilitated discussion, it felt different. No volunteers. Intentional wait time. Strategic participation. Instead, clipboard in hand and data collected, she facilitated: “Let’s start with Amir’s model.” “Notice how Sofia structured her equation, let’s build from there.” “I want us to analyze this error. What does it reveal?” She wasn’t fishing anymore. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🏹 🔍 Intentional. 🎯 Targeted. 📍 Purpose-driven. And the room changed. Students leaned in. Ideas connected. The math built deliberately from one idea to the next. 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗮��𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. Monitoring isn’t wandering. It’s data collection in motion. 🔖 If this distinction sharpened your lens as a leader, save this. You’ll want it the next time you’re in classrooms. ♻️ And if you believe discussions should be engineered, not left to chance, repost this so more math educators can stop fishing and start hunting. Dr. Twana Young liked thisStrengthening TK–12 Math Intervention Under the California Mathematics Framework, held on May 27, 2026, brought together educators, administrators, county office leaders, and statewide partners to explore innovative approaches to mathematics intervention, MTSS, and special education. Hosted by the UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) with support from California Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science Partnership (#CALMSCS), in partnership with the California Department of Education, Orange County Department of Education California Multi-Tiered System of Supports (CA MTSS), the Placer County Office Of Education Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Open Access Project, Solano County Office of Education, Travis Unified School District, and participating school districts, the workshop highlighted current challenges, priorities, and opportunities for supporting students through engaging and effective mathematics instruction. The workshop featured statewide, county, and district perspectives on current challenges and priorities in MTSS and special education with a focus on mathematics, as well as collaborative discussions on future partnerships, professional learning opportunities, pilot implementations, and funding possibilities. Participants also explored Key Elements of Effective TK–12 Mathematics Intervention, including standards-aligned and grade-level instruction, hands-on learning experiences using manipulatives, physical movement, coding, and robotics, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), collaborative learning opportunities, and research-informed instructional strategies that support mathematical reasoning, math discourse, student engagement, and equitable access to mathematics. Dr. Twana Young liked thisDr. Twana Young liked thisThis week, a kindergarten student said something to me that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. He said: “Como voy aprendiendo inglés, voy olvidando el español. Cuando hablo con mi papá o mi mamá me confundo en cómo decir…” He’s five. We often talk about the myriad cognitive benefits of bilingualism, and moments like this remind me that language is also identity, family, memory, belonging, and connection. I have been a multilingual learner my entire life. I realize what a gift this is. My bilingualism has allowed me to move between worlds, communicate across generations, stay rooted in my culture, and has afforded me advantages to serve students and families through education. Language learning should never come at the expense of identity. Our schools should be places where multilingualism is protected, celebrated, and sustained, not quietly erased. I am inspired by the extraordinary Dual Language programs across NYC, where educators and school leaders are proving every day that students can achieve strong academic outcomes while also maintaining connections to their language, culture, and families. This moment reminded me why I care so deeply about strengthening spaces that honor students’ full humanity and linguistic assets. Recently, I had the privilege of judging 40 different ST Math student projects as part of the One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase event, and I left feeling incredibly proud! Proud of the students, proud of this partnership, and proud to work for an organization so deeply committed to meaningful learning experiences for kids. The creativity and thoughtfulness the students brought to their projects was incredible. Students selected ST Math games, explained the mathematics behind the puzzles, and connected their learning to real-world industries and careers. You could see the amount of preparation, problem-solving, and pride that went into every presentation. The hardest part was choosing a winner! What stood out most was seeing students talk about math with confidence, curiosity, and genuine excitement. Not just solving problems, but deeply understanding the mathematical thinking behind them and making authentic connections to the world. One8 continues to be an exceptional partner because they care deeply about creating learning experiences that matter. Their team does an incredible job bringing applied learning to life by helping students connect classroom learning to real-world problem-solving, careers, and industry experiences. They stay focused on what matters most: helping students see the relevance and purpose behind what they are learning. At MIND Education, we talk a lot about building problem-solvers and helping students develop a deep understanding of math through perseverance, visual learning, and productive struggle. Events like this are such a powerful reflection of that work in action. Moments like this are a powerful reminder that when students are given the opportunity to deeply engage, persevere, and connect learning to the real world, they don’t just learn math. They begin to see themselves as capable problem-solvers.
