Terry Swack reacted on thisTerry Swack reacted on thisNepal is grieving, and so am I. What has happened in Nepal is beyond words. A sudden flash flood has devastated entire villages and settlements, washing away homes, roads, bridges, power plants, and livelihoods built over generations. Hundreds of lives have been lost, and many families are still waiting and hoping for news about their loved ones. The full scale of the devastation is still unfolding. Preliminary analysis suggests that the flash flood was triggered by a glacier collapse. While there is still much to understand about what happened, it is hard not to connect this tragedy to the larger climate crisis. Glaciers across the Himalayas are melting and becoming increasingly unstable as temperatures rise. And this is where I am struggling with a simple question: Is this fair? Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it continues to face some of the harshest consequences of a changing climate. More than 90% of Nepal's electricity comes from hydropower, around 46% of the country is covered by forests, and Nepal is among the world's leaders in EV adoption. Nepal has done so little to create this problem, yet its people are being asked to bear so much of its consequences. This tragedy has also made me reflect on why I am proud of the work I do. I work with manufacturers to identify environmental hotspots in their operations and products and find ways to reduce their emissions. Sometimes the impact of this work can feel minimal, but moments like this remind me why it matters. It motivates me to keep doing my part. For anyone looking for a way to help, one meaningful option is to donate to Nepal's Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. This is an official relief channel established through the Office of the Prime Minister of Nepal, not a private fundraising campaign. By contributing through this channel, you can have confidence that your donation is going toward the government's ongoing responses, including rescue and relief efforts now and reconstruction and redevelopment in the months and years ahead. Terry Swack reacted on thisI'm honored to serve in this role on the HPDC Technical Committee. I was involved in building the very first iteration of the HPD Builder and the HPD Repository over a decade ago, before even the incorporation of HPDC itself. For many years I've been the lead developer of Pharos, the chemical hazard database and API which, among other things, powers the hazard listings in HPDs. At a time when HPDC was in the process of evolving its standard from static PDF documents to a more dynamic interface, and coming up on many of the same technical challenges we've long wrestled with at Habitable, it felt like a natural time for me to get more involved when I applied to join this committee two years ago. In the past two years, it has been a joy to tackle some of the hairier challenges of this work of standard-building with a diverse group of folks in the ecosystem, and it has brought me more insight into the perspective of manufacturers and third-party consultants working to meet the demands of material transparency. That's the quiet problem with most product impact data today: even when brands follow the same PCR, different tools and different interpretations produce results that don't line up. The data is real, but it isn't comparable. This pilot took a run at fixing that. We turned the PCR into a prescriptive, software-ready set of modeling rules, so any team gets the same results from the same inputs regardless of which LCA tool they use. CarbonGraph modeled REI's rain jacket against those rules, and we mapped the full path from those modeled results to a third-party verified EPD or PCF with Embodied Carbon Solutions. product impact makes the results available in its database from any LCA tool or program operator. Every partner owned a separate step, and no one graded their own homework. Comparability and independence have to be built in from the first modeling decision. That's what this workflow does, and it's ready for the next product. In 1998, co-founded, with Clement Mok, its purpose to 'create a forum for the advance of experience design in the network economy; and to define and build a community of practitioners who will shape and advocate for the role of design in a world that is increasingly digital.' The community grew to a national membership with groups established in 14 major US cities and London. Experience design is now a ubiquitous practice. In 2003, co-created and co-chaired DUX (Designing for User Experiences), the first joint conference on interactive digital design based on peer-reviewed case studies. Terry served on the AIGA national board of directors from 2001-4.
