🎬 Can we predict if a film will fail before it ever hits the screen? That’s the exact question that led Vijay Anand, a veteran from the Indian startup ecosystem and a passionate cinephile, to launch Quanten Media, a startup blending AI, wearable tech, and real-time physiological data to help filmmakers and distributors identify weak spots in their content before release. This is probably one of my most unique angel investments to date and it's been fascinating to see how Vijay has built the company so far. With over US$247B spent on content in 2024 and failure rates soaring at 93%, Quanten offers a refreshing solution to a broken model where gut instinct still reigns over data-driven insights. Instead of relying on biased focus groups or outdated dials, Quanten uses lightweight wearables (think smart 3D glasses) to capture heart rate, eye movement, and engagement data during test screenings. What emerges? A real-time engagement map that can inform editing, marketing, and even release strategies. Quanten’s tech has already been used by NEON, the distributor behind Parasite and Anora, to test a new film before launch. Their data can identify a film’s genre, without knowing the title, just by reading the “attention fingerprint.” The platform is not just about diagnostics for film; it’s being tapped for virtual product launches, advertising, and more. For storytellers, this is not about replacing creativity. It’s about equipping creators with feedback loops that other industries take for granted. The news that Microsoft is shuttering Xandr, its DSP, is more than just another product sunset—it’s a signal flare. In fact, we are witnessing the early stages of DSP consolidation. There are too many platforms doing the same thing, and not enough differentiation in a market that now demands more transparency, not more complexity. It also marks another turning point toward AI-led media. As legacy systems phase out, AI isn’t just enhancing media buying—it’s redefining it and becoming a high priority. But here’s the issue we, as an industry, still haven’t solved: ad fraud. Billions continue to be siphoned from marketers and platforms due to opaque black box systems and bad actors. Consolidation and AI won’t fix it unless we intentionally design for accountability. As someone who’s been in ad tech long enough to see platforms rise and fall, I don’t see this as the end of Xandr. Retail Media is not a channel. It’s a measurement advantage. India retail media adex is projected at ~30cr in 2026, up from ~19crore in 2024 (~58% in 2 yrs!). Retail media isn’t winning because it has “new inventory.” It’s winning because it closes the loop. It has: a. built-in intent: users on these platforms are truely looking to buy b. determinstic audiences: logged in users c. proof of value: (not just execution!): brands can tie exposure to basket/revenue In a world where measurement is collapsing, retail media is effectively selling a purchase-like signal bundled with distribution.
