Steven Brown reposted thisSteven Brown reposted thisAfter a lot of research, interviews, writing, rewriting, and late nights… I’m excited to share that my new book is officially out: Supply Chain 5.0: Driving Human-Centric Technology in Supply Chain Operations co-authored with Janeth Gabaldon. The book explores what comes after digital transformation in supply chain management. Industry 4.0 gave us automation, AI, IoT, and data-driven operations. Industry 5.0 asks a bigger question: How do we use these technologies to build supply chains that are more human-centered, resilient, and sustainable? We wrote this as a practical roadmap for leaders navigating the next phase of supply chain transformation with real-world examples, implementation guidance, and lessons learned from across the industry. It’s been incredibly rewarding to work on a topic I care deeply about, and I’m grateful to everyone who encouraged, challenged, and supported us along the way. You can check it out here: https://amzn.to/3Q5Wya9 And if you do read it, I’d genuinely appreciate an Amazon review. Reviews really help other professionals decide whether the book is worth their time, and they make a huge difference for authors. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey. Steven Brown reposted thisSteven Brown reposted thisI’m grateful to share that the corrections to my doctoral dissertation have been accepted, and I am now formally cleared to graduate with my Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Cranfield School of Management. My research, "Vulnerability as a Strategic Choice: The Role of Trust in Supply Chain Resilience," explored how leaders make trust decisions before, during, and after disruptions, and how those choices shape resilience outcomes over time. Rather than treating trust as a soft concept, the research examined it as an intentional strategic decision, one that involves accepting vulnerability in the face of uncertainty. This work would not have been possible without the generosity of the senior supply chain executives from around the world who gave their time, spoke candidly about difficult moments, and shared experience that can only be earned the hard way. I am deeply thankful for your openness and trust. I am also sincerely grateful to my supervisors Nicky Yates, Ioannis Koliousis, and Richard Wilding OBE (Professor) for their guidance, rigor, and steady support throughout this journey. Their challenge and encouragement pushed the work to a far higher standard than I could have reached alone. Also thanks to Martin Christopher who first introduced me to Cranfield University. To my colleagues and friends who checked in, challenged my thinking, and believed in me at moments when I struggled to believe in myself, thank you. Your support mattered more than you know. And finally, to my family, thank you for your patience, understanding, and love across what turned into a ten-year journey. This milestone belongs to you as much as it does to me. I’m looking forward to sharing more insights from the research and exploring how trust-based decisions can help leaders build supply chains that are not just efficient, but resilient in a meaningful and human way. ~Mr. Supply Chain® #AlwaysBeLearning #SupplyChain #Cranfield

Steven Brown reposted thisSteven Brown reposted thisOne pattern that’s become increasingly clear to me today at the Qubits 2026 conference is how often conversations circle back to the pace and quality of decisions. Janeth Gabaldon and I recently collaborated to apply my Information Value Chain model to illustrate the impact of AI. https://lnkd.in/e9V6hisK ⏵ At the foundation is data. Raw facts such as names, locations, timestamps, sensor readings, or transactions. By itself, data has limited value. ⏵ When data is filtered, organized, and structured, it becomes information. Information adds context and allows systems to report what is happening. ⏵ Knowledge emerges when information is analyzed to identify patterns, evaluate trade-offs, and support decisions. This is where planning, optimization, and many operational decisions take place. ⏵ At the end of the chain is wisdom. Wisdom is the application of judgment, experience, and intuition. It’s deciding which trade-offs matter most, when to act, and when not to. As we move up this value chain, the information becomes more valuable, but it also becomes harder to process. Connections multiply. Dependencies increase. The number of possible options grows rapidly, especially in complex supply chain networks. Historically, computers have been very good at handling data and information, while people have been better at knowledge and wisdom. But that boundary is shifting, and many human tasks are being automated. AI systems now identify patterns at scales humans cannot. Advanced optimization methods explore decision spaces that are far too large to evaluate manually. And quantum-enabled approaches are being explored as a way to push beyond the practical limits of classical computing when complexity grows beyond manageable bounds. This came up repeatedly today across discussions of large-scale optimization, production scheduling, network operations, and complex system planning. In many cases, the challenge isn’t a lack of data or insight. It’s how quickly teams can work through complex trade-offs before conditions change. From a supply chain perspective, this tension is very familiar. Planning takes time. Execution has to move. Visibility improves, but not always in time to influence outcomes. These challenges often arise because planning, execution, and visibility systems evolve separately, even though real-world decisions cut across all three. What caught my attention today is how quantum-enabled methods are being explored not as replacements for existing systems, but as extensions of what’s possible as classical approaches approach their limits. As supply chains move toward higher levels of autonomy, the ability to generate high-quality answers much faster becomes increasingly important. Not to remove humans from the loop, but to support better choices in environments where speed and complexity both matter. ~Mr. Supply Chain® #AlwaysBeLearning #SupplyChain #Qubits2026 #Quantum

Steven Brown shared thisA new book is coming this spring from Daniel Stanton and Janeth Gabaldon. This week only, you can get a 40% discount on a pre-order of Supply Chain 5.0! Do take a look. #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #alwaysbelearningSteven Brown shared thisSupply Chain 5.0 Is Here. And It’s About More Than Technology. I’m excited to finally share something I’ve been working on for almost a year. My new book, Supply Chain 5.0, co-authored with Janeth Gabaldon, will be released this May and it is now available for pre-order from Kogan Page Publishing. Over the past few years, much of the conversation in supply chain has focused on digitalization, automation, and AI. Those are critical. But they are not the full story. Supply Chain 5.0 is about what comes next. Building on the principles of Industry 5.0, the book reframes the role of technology in supply chains by putting human collaboration, resilience, and sustainability back at the center. It is not about chasing tools. It is about designing decision capabilities, operating models, and technology roadmaps that actually work in complex, real-world supply chains. Inside the book, we cover: ⏵ Practical roadmaps for implementing advanced technologies ⏵ How AI, automation, IoT, and analytics fit together in modern operations ⏵ Circular supply chains, reverse logistics, and resilience by design ⏵ How leaders can navigate complexity, trade-offs, and competing objectives This is a practical guide written for executives and senior supply chain leaders who are preparing their organizations for the next industrial shift, not just the next software upgrade. If you are interested, Kogan Page is offering a limited-time pre-order promotion: ⏵ 40% off ⏵ Free shipping in the U.S. and UK ⏵ Use code SALE40 ⏵ Valid through February 2 Pre-orders are available now on the Kogan Page website. https://lnkd.in/eVmvEneM Janeth and I look forward to sharing more insights as we get closer to launch. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has encouraged, challenged, and inspired this work. ~Mr. Supply Chain® #AlwaysBeLearning #SupplyChain #SupplyChain5

Steven Brown reposted thisSteven Brown reposted thisThe CSCMP Global Learning Challenge is complete and the impact continues. Over the past months, supply chain professionals from around the world committed to learning, consistency, and skill building. They did more than enroll. They stayed engaged, completed coursework, earned credentials, and demonstrated what global professional development can achieve when people follow through. As we close out the challenge, we continue to support a small number of participants who experienced access issues. Additional recognitions will follow because fairness and access matter in global learning. While the Challenge itself has ended, the opportunity to keep learning remains. The CSCMP Supply Chain Foundations Professional Certificates on LinkedIn Learning are available year round for individuals with access through employers, universities, public libraries, or paid LinkedIn accounts. We are grateful to CSCMP and LinkedIn Learning and to every learner who chose to invest time in growth. The challenge may be complete. Steven Brown reacted on thisSteven Brown reacted on thisI am excited to share that I have completed the Operations Management Professional Certificate from the Jack Welch Management Institute. One thing I have learned throughout my career is that growth doesn't come from experience alone - it comes from staying curious enough to keep learning, no matter the mileage or experience you may have. Over the last decade, I have had the opportunity to work across manufacturing, operations, supply chain, product development, and program management. What started as an engineering internship eventually led me to a Vice President role in less than eight years. Along the way, I've learned that the most impactful leaders are the ones who can connect strategy, people, and execution. This program reinforced many of the principles I've relied on throughout my career - operational excellence, continuous improvement, process optimization, supply chain strategy, and scalable business operations. More importantly, it challenged me to think differently about how organizations grow and sustain success. I'm grateful to the teams, mentors, and colleagues who have been part of this journey. Every milestone is really the result of great people working toward a common goal. Here is an upshot of this year’s ASCM event. 1) Supply chain disruptions have become “the norm”, rather than ‘the unexpected’. 2) Do not expect the tariff changes to be undone in a short time; it is going to take years for the tariff pendulum to swing back 3) AI is not a buzz word; it is going make lives easier for some, harder for some other (not a dead end trap though if you want to navigate through the challenges). Use cases and real life applications in supply chain will have a snowball effect, with no visible decelerating element in sight 4) Trade wars are going to be in plain sight; winners will be the ones who have figured out to blend ‘scarce resource management’, ‘people and skill development, and ‘innovation / use of technologies’; but not the ones “pointing fingers or building higher walls” 5) Agility and resilience will decide on the survivor, just like Charles Darwin said “It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change” 6) Collaboration will be more important than ever. To go fast, you can go alone, but if you want to go far, go together. The event in a nutshell, was a well spent time and helped me to make so many connections, both mentally and network wise. I look forward engaging with my peers, ASCM partners all over the world, to make to support ASCM’s vision to “make our planet a better place through supply chain excellence.”

Trade Protection Changes More Than Price... It Changes Logistics As tariffs rise and carbon rules tighten, steel leaders aren’t just rethinking where they source, they’re rethinking how material moves. Protection shifts the advantage toward: • Shorter domestic lanes • Regional mills and processors • Predictable, disciplined transportation • Partners who understand steel timing, handling, and risk In a protected market, logistics stops being a back-office function and becomes part of margin protection. The companies that win aren’t just buying steel wisely, they’re moving it intentionally. #SteelLogistics #SupplyChainStrategy #MidwestManufacturing #IndustrialLeadership #FreightMatters

Most operational issues don’t start with major failures. They start when processes stop being followed consistently. A skipped scan. An assumed movement. A shortcut taken because “it saves time.” At first, nothing seems wrong. Until inventory drifts. Visibility weakens. Confidence in the system starts to break. That’s the problem with reactive operations. They wait until the issue appears before they respond to it. COE was never built to operate that way. COE is proactive and preventative by design. The goal isn’t just to correct problems — it’s to prevent the conditions that create them. That’s where the CCE becomes critical. The CCE isn’t there to slow operations down. It exists to protect the standard. It creates an environment where: Processes are reinforced Gaps become visible early Execution stays aligned Before issues spread through the operation. Because once inconsistency becomes accepted, control starts to disappear. Reactive systems chase errors after they happen. Preventative systems reduce the chance of them happening at all. That’s the difference between managing instability… and building an operation designed to hold under pressure. Built on structure. Driven by accuracy. Sustained by discipline. — COE #COE #CCE #Operations #Leadership #OperationalExcellence #InventoryManagement

Strategic rescue planning works best when it’s treated like an operations system, not a binder on a shelf. A simple way to pressure-test integration: 1) Ownership: Who is accountable for readiness? 2) Competency: Who is trained, and how often is it validated? 3) Equipment: What’s ready today (not “available somewhere”)? 4) Comms/command: Who leads, who calls it, who supports? 5) Drills: When did you last test it under realistic constraints? 6) Contractors: Are external teams aligned to your plan? Saw this at the store and had to snap a photo. It’s a simple reminder: supply chain and logistics affect everyone. You don’t need to work in the industry to feel the impact. Empty shelves and delay signs like this show how deeply embedded supply chains are in everyday life. When product doesn’t move, everything downstream stalls: sales, customer experience, trust. This is why strong logistics and supply chain talent matter. It’s also why companies can’t afford to treat these roles as an afterthought. This is where we come in: https://lnkd.in/gMzW7TxG #supplychain #logistics #recruiting #hiring

Your picking errors are not from your staff… they are from your layout. For years, I used to get frustrated by random picking errors showing up every other week. You know those errors that don’t make sense? The ones that delay dispatch, slow down lead times, and make the entire warehouse team look like they are not doing their job? I remember one particular month where the errors were so frequent that we had to do multiple re-checks before dispatch, just to be safe. But the truth wasn’t the staff. It wasn’t even negligence. 📌 The real problem was the layout. When I finally sat down to document and redesign the picking zones, slotting logic, bin sequencing, and aisle flow… everything changed. ✓Picking time dropped drastically ✓Accuracy went up ✓Lead times stabilized ✓Team pressure reduced ✓Firefighting stopped That experience taught me that warehouse excellence is never accidental, it is engineered. And engineered through proper structure, clarity, and methodical systems. That is why I published the Warehouse Excellence Playbook, a complete, practical guide that shows you exactly how to design layouts, improve picking accuracy, reduce errors, and streamline your entire warehouse. It’s not theory. It’s not shortcuts. It’s step-by-step, experience-backed warehouse guidance that will transform your operations. As a Veteran, one key piece of advice I would offer to transitioning service members is to embrace the possibility of relocation. Transitioning from military to civilian life is akin to pivoting industries, and it can be challenging to effectively communicate our military experience to employers without direct industry-relevant experience. However, many employers value the Veteran mindset and recognize the unique contributions we can make. The challenge lies in finding those employers. By limiting your job search to one city or state, you may be overlooking numerous opportunities to enter various industries. I understand that the military lifestyle often involved frequent moves, and you might be eager to settle down or have family ties to a specific area. Nevertheless, being open to relocation for the right opportunity can allow you to gain valuable experience that could lead to the ideal position at a company you admire, in a location you prefer. In summary, the transition period can be difficult enough without further narrowing your options. Stay open to opportunities that could enhance your career journey. #veterans #transitioningmilitary #army

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about where I want my career to go. Transitioning from the Army into the civilian workforce has taught me that the skills I built logistics, scheduling, dispatching, and keeping operations running under pressure are valuable outside of the uniform too. Biggest takeaway so far: consistency and adaptability matter more than anything. If you can keep things moving and communicate well, you can solve just about any problem.

I recently read Strategic Problem Solving by Tony Gruebl and Brian Shane. Among the different tools, one that stood out to me was MoSCoW prioritization: * Must have * Should have * Could have * Won’t have Simple in concept. Powerful in practice. What I’ve seen leading operations is that most teams are comfortable defining the “Musts”… but far fewer are willing to clearly define the “Won’ts.” When everything is treated as critical, focus disappears and progress slows down. In real environments, results don’t come from better frameworks, they come from discipline in prioritization and clarity in trade-offs. The ability to say no is what ultimately protects execution. #BusinessTransformation #OperationalExcellence #StrategyExecution #DecisionMaking

✨ Don’t just take our word for it—hear directly from one of our #graduates! Heroes MAKE America equips transitioning service members with the #skills, #certifications, and #connections they need to launch meaningful careers in #manufacturing and #supplychain. 🎖 Here’s what Tami Bush shared about their experience in our #virtual #logistics program taught in partnership with Washburn Institute of Technology: “After serving as a 79R in the military and earning a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management, I knew that preparation would be key to a successful transition into the civilian workforce. I enrolled in the Heroes MAKE America (HMA) Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) program to enhance my skill set and explore new career opportunities. Over the course of the 9-week program, I was challenged and grew tremendously—earning the Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) certifications, as well as OSHA 30 for General Industry. What made this program truly impactful was its focus on practical skills and its ability to connect participants directly with employers who value veterans. Thanks to the HMA program, I was introduced to opportunities in Hutchinson, KS, and ultimately connected with Viega, where I’m now proud to begin my next chapter as an EHS Specialist II. I’m grateful for the support and guidance that Heroes MAKE America provided throughout this journey—it made all the difference.” We are proud to see our graduates thriving and making an impact across the industry. At 7 Eagle Group, we are dedicated to revising our resumes to better fit the civilian job market as we transition out of the military. Our guest speaker, Kevin Hudson, a former Marine, provided valuable insights on how to "demilitarize" our resumes. He emphasized the importance of condensing military jargon into civilian language, making it easier for potential employers to understand our work experience. We possess the experience and leadership qualities that make us highly desirable candidates, but using military terms can lead to misunderstandings that may cause employers to overlook our qualifications. I want to express my gratitude to Kevin for motivating us to enhance our hireability by focusing on demilitarizing our resumes. This effort will help ensure that our qualities are recognized quickly and effectively in the civilian workforce. Jordie Kern Ernest Smith Captain Matthew Morin Clay Wilson Kylea Fackelman
