💡 Tips for OPT / STEM-OPT Candidates Seeking H-1B Sponsorship If you’re on OPT (or STEM OPT), here are some strategies to increase your chances of getting an employer to sponsor you for H-1B, especially given the new cost/risk environment: Be clear about your value Employers will be more cautious now with higher costs. Show how your skills directly match a “specialty occupation” requirement. Quantify what you bring (e.g. past internships, projects, technical skills) so they see sponsoring you is worth the investment. Target cap-exempt employers Universities, non-profit research institutions, or certain non-profits are cap-exempt. That means they aren’t subject to the H-1B lottery or quotas, which simplifies sponsorship. careercenter.umich.edu Choose jobs related to your degree and STEM fields Especially under STEM OPT, your role must be directly tied to your degree. 💡 Job hunting right now is more challenging than ever 💡 We are witnessing a harsh job market—candidates are competing for scarce openings, & every day, we see more & more layoffs. The current U.S. administration, tech giants, & countless other companies (many of which don’t even make the headlines) are all making cuts. The result? Every time I log into LinkedIn, I see more green "Open to Work" banners. Even when I apply to roles I’m genuinely interested in, ones posted less than 12 hours ago, I often find that they already have 900+ applicants. With so many professionals desperately trying to land a job, scammers, phishers, & cyber attackers see the perfect opportunity to strike. ⚠️ Fake job postings. ⚠️ Fake recruiters. ⚠️ Fake career "opportunities." I've seen this happening so much over the past month—LinkedIn profiles of so-called "recruiters" reaching out, offering a dream job that doesn’t actually exist. It’s so easy to fall for these traps, so here are some ways to protect yourself from recruitment scams: 🔹 Check their LinkedIn profile – Do they actually work for a legitimate company? Do they have a solid number of connections? If their profile looks super empty or sketchy, red flag 🚩. 🔹 Verify any links they send – I once had a "recruiter" send me a link for a so-called resume reviewer who would "optimize my CV." He kept pushing me to reach out to his "colleague," insisting she was busy but had a spot saved for me. Spoiler alert: It was a scam. Always be cautious before clicking any links. 🔹 Check their activity – Scroll through their comments & posts. If they’re copy-pasting the same message over & over through comments on other peoples posts, red flag 🚩. 🔹 Verify their email – If they contact you via email, or ask you to reach out to them via email and provide you with their email address, check if it's from a legitimate company domain (like @company.com) instead of a random Gmail or Yahoo account. 🔹 Go with your gut – If something feels off, trust your instincts. Scammers often start off professional but will eventually ask for weird personal details or make unrealistic promises. 🔹 Salary conversation trick – If they ask for your salary expectations early on, flip the question back: “What’s the range for this role?” Scammers often respond with “That’s exactly what this role offers!”—which is a major red flag 🚩. I’ve personally encountered multiple scams over the last month in my job hunt. It’s a frustrating reality of the job search, but being vigilant can save you from falling into these traps. 👀 Have you come across fake recruiters or job scams? What red flags do you look out for?

Resume Help! One of my favorite things to do when talking to a candidate about a job is helping with their resume. Not just for the position we’re discussing, but to give overall advice and suggestions that help them get calls for the right opportunities in the market. Here are a few of the main things I go over with everyone: ✅ Start with the basics. Your first and last name (not just an initial). City, state, and zip - You don’t need your full address, but those three are searchable pieces of data that help recruiters find you. Even if you’re targeting remote jobs, I still want to know your time zone (CST, EST, PST). Make sure your email, phone number, and LinkedIn URL are listed. You don’t need a picture on your resume, just make sure your LinkedIn has one. 💡 Pro tip: Save your resume file as your first and last name “Crystal Rehling” and nothing else. ✅ Have a summary, not an objective. Your summary is your elevator pitch. It should highlight the quantifiable, tangible skills you’re bringing to your next role. Someone should read your summary and know what job they would hire you for! Be specific. Skip the soft skills here; people will gauge those when they meet you. Use this space for hard data and measurable impact. 💻 If you’re in IT: Right after your summary, include a Core Technical Skills section. This should list your key tools, systems, and technologies, things like programming languages, ERP systems, CRM platforms, or integration tools. It gives hiring managers an instant snapshot of your capabilities before diving into your experience. ✅ Prioritize your recent experience. Your most recent roles should have the most detail. For positions 10+ years old, stick to main highlights or list a brief technical environment section. You can even say “previous experience available upon request” or just list the company, title, and dates without bullet points. 🎓 Education goes last. Unless you’re a recent grad, your education should appear at the end of your resume. Let your professional experience lead the story. 🌐 Finally: Make sure all of this information is also on your LinkedIn profile. It’s searchable data that helps recruiters find you for your next job. Someone mentioned to me recently that she was told to keep her LinkedIn brief since people can see the details on her resume. I completely disagree! Why skills fail in the US job market 𝟭️ 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 They hire problem-solvers. If your resume says: “Worked on ETL pipelines using Python” But doesn’t say: Why it mattered What improved What decision it enabled You sound like everyone else. 𝟮️ 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 US employers ask silently: Can this person deliver fast? As someone who’s been through Amazon’s hiring process 3 times and hired dozens of engineers, I see résumés that clearly got mangled by the system. The engineers who figure this out get interviews.
