Communicating to be visible, influential, and top of mind is one of the top challenges named by the introverted professional women I coach, so I gladly sat in on Jessica Chen's masterclass: "Communicate to Influence in the Age of AI". Jessica is an Emmy Award-winning former journalist and the author of "Smart, Not Loud". Here are 7 key learnings I jotted down in my notebook: 1. Attend meetings with a plan to say something. 2. Listen actively - not passively. Notice tone and body language, not just what's being said. 3. Think about your purpose in speaking up: Is it to explain, to recommend, to clarify, to decide? 4. Jessica's handy A-B-C checklist for powerful communication: A: Audience attention (Ask: What will they learn from you?) B: Be tailored in what you say and how you say it. (Ask: How much do they understand? What information will make their job easier?) C: Clear delivery. 5. Instead of dwelling on what you haven't done well in, think of what ACTIONS you can take. (I love this one and use it a lot myself - it's a great antidote to rumination for those of us who are overthinkers!) 6. Clear Thinking + Clear Speaking + Consistency = Influence. 7. Ask yourself: WHY do I want to be influential? (Without a guiding purpose, all the strategies and tactics are meaningless.) Thanks Jessica Chen for your wisdom and insights!
