“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻” University of Oklahoma head coach, Brent Venables responds to a journalist who tells him that you can’t create pressure and tension in training: “I believe it starts with the coaches. If it ain’t game seven mentality from the coaches, then it ain’t gonna be for the players.” He spoke about the importance of living in the moment, as you would in matches: “ I believe in living and dying in that moment. I believe in that. And I believe in that atmosphere. And it’s our job to create that environment, to create that buy in, to create that response, to create that sense of urgency, and that sense of desperation. That’s how you chase excellence.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴? As alluded to by Coach Venables, we can create pressure within practice. According to Driskell et al. (2008), this form of training involves exposing individuals to demands that may be present in a given task setting: ✅Noise ✅ Threat ✅ Time pressure ✅ Fatigue ✅ Other environmental demands 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲? Driskell and Johnston (1998) stated that this form of training involves 3 distinct phases: 1️⃣ 𝙀𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙁𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙖𝙨𝙠 𝙀𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 During this part of training, individuals are provided with information on what stress is, common symptoms that people can experience when experiencing stress, and the effects of stress on performance in a pressurised setting. We 2️⃣ 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝-𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 During Phase 2, individuals learn the skills that are required in the specific task setting (i.e., rugby match, military, law enforcement). 3️⃣ 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 Practice should involve exposure to realistic conditions to build individuals' confidence. The South African Rugby Union (SA Rugby) international team have trained under noisy conditions to enhance their confidence in performing under such conditions. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸? Driskell et al. (2001) found that stress exposure training enhanced performance during stressful settings and reduced stress perceptions. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (2004) has also used stress exposure training to simulate stress among law enforcement officers and improve decision-making under stress (Norris & Wollert, 2011). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀? In addition to exposing individuals to demanding situations, I think it's very important to teach coping strategies that can be deployed and practised under stressful training conditions because we know that coping is associated with performance across many sports (Nicholls et al., 2016).

“Clear, Concise, and Simple is Best” Seán Sweeney, the assistant coach at the San Antonio Spurs talks about the importance of keeping instructional content simple for players and providing information that players are ready to receive: “What’s are basic thought in this, what’s our foundation, what’s our philosophy, what’s one thing we can throw at them, what’s a second layer we can go to? And then the other stuff, we have to have ready as coaches, but we’re not going to put it all in at once.” Coach Sweeney talks about not overloading players. This is supported by evidence as people can not remember large amounts of information. It was once thought that people could remember 5 to 9 things, or as George Miller referred to it as '7 plus or minus 2.' As such, it was reasonable to think that players would understand and remember complex instructions from their coach. However, Alan Baddley (1994) conducted a series of studies and found that people can only remember 3 to 4 things, and not 5 to 9 things. Further, people can only retain in the information for 20 seconds, unless they repeat them over and over! PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS As coaches and psychologists, we need to keep instructions very brief and concentrate on a MAXIMUM of 3 key points during competitions to ensure we do not overload the memories of our athletes. We can also ask our athletes to demonstrate their understanding of the instructions, but as alluded to by Enrique, players will often say yes. Perhaps rather than a quick question, such as “did you understand?”, coaches might want to ask (time permitting): “If X happens, what will you do?” OR “If Y occurs how will your position change” By asking these questions, players are required to demonstrate they have understood and can implement new instructions from their coach, who can correct them if required. If you post an assistant strength coach position and its less than 30k, you simply cannot afford an assistant coach. Use the money on a paid internship or begin working with the university to create a GA position at least there is more value in that. Head strength coaches must understand that they are responsible for the financial abuse that occurs just as much as the administrators that hamstring budgets. You arent going to get anyone of worth or with staying power regardless at that pay.

That’s wasted time—for you and your players. ✅ The fix? In the realm of football development, a critical examination reveals a common trend in the discourse. Many articles circulating on social media highlight various solutions like increased coaching, enhanced education for coaches, national curriculum implementation, improved Elite structures, and enhanced funding for facility development. However, these discussions often miss addressing the fundamental issue at the core. The key disparity lies in the approach to player development between nations. Countries with a robust football culture ensure that their youth master the fundamental skills well before engaging in organized play. This early mastery sets them up for advanced coaching, enabling them to swiftly progress to higher-level skills. On the contrary, in other nations, children join teams with the expectation of receiving top-tier coaching to develop basic skills that their counterparts from football-centric cultures have already honed years earlier. This fundamental contrast significantly impacts the developmental trajectory of players across different nations. The crux of the matter lies in the Entry Level phase, transcending the importance of sheer numbers of coaches, educational programs, or curriculum quality. It hinges on fostering a culture where values, beliefs, and a shared passion for the sport are deeply ingrained within families and communities. Here, children's affinity for the ball precedes their love for the game, nurturing a lifelong devotion to both playing and spectating, a tradition passed down through generations. The true essence of this transformative process lies not in costly coaching or state-of-the-art facilities but in the intangible yet profound influence of culture. It's an invisible force that shapes attitudes and behaviors, transcending mere physical attributes. The priceless value of this cultural foundation cannot be overstated, defining the success of football development in ways that surpass material investments. For years, the aquatics field has worked without a national system to track what truly keeps children safe in the water. Every swim school, every YMCA, every adaptive program, every therapist, and every instructor has been doing their own version of recordkeeping — and none of it connects. Today, I’m sharing a one-page overview of a new collaborative effort: The National Aquatic Education Data Collective. This is not a curriculum. This is not a replacement for what already works. This is a shared tool that allows all of us — across methods, states, and facilities — to gather the same baseline data so we can finally answer the questions that matter: • What approaches produce the safest, most confident swimmers? • How do trauma-aware or somatic practices influence progress? • What adaptations help children who learn differently? • How many lessons does it really take for a child to become water competent? • Where are the access gaps, and who is being left out? The more we look at national drowning data, the clearer it becomes: The states with the highest drowning burden are not the ones with the strongest swim-lesson infrastructure.
