Carryless Arithmetic Mod 10
College Mathematics Journal Jan 2012 / Mathematical Association of America
[follow links on CMJ web site] Received 2013 George Polya Award
What might arithmetic look like on an island that eschews carry digits? How would primes, squares and other number theoretical concepts play out on such an island?Other authorsSee publication -
Dismal Arithmetic
Journal of Integer Sequences
Dismal arithmetic [since renamed "lunar" arithmetic] is just like the arithmetic you learned in school, only simpler: there are no carries, when you add digits you just take the largest, and when you multiply digits you take the smallest. This paper studies basic number theory in this world, including analogues of the primes, number of divisors, sum of divisors, and the partition function.

Descending Dungeons and Iterated Base-Changing
"The Mathematics of Preference, Choice and Order" / Springer
For real numbers a,b>1 define the subscript notation a_b as the result of reinterpreting a in base b. We define subscript "dungeons" a_b_c_... of base changes (by analogy with "towers" of superscript exponents a^b^c^...). Among other things we show that sequences like 10_11_12_... grow like 10^10^(n log log n) and converge to "p-adic fixpoints". We also investigate the behavior of a_a_..._a with n a's as dynamical systems, and show they either converge (eg to the golden ratio when a=1.1)…

Digital Waveshaping Synthesis
Journal Audio Engineering Society
See publicationAbstract: Waveshaping synthesis, a newly developed tool for the generation of musical sounds, is described. The method is well suited to implementation on a digital computer and is both economical and flexible. In addition it provides a unified conceptual framework for a number of nonlinear techniques, including frequency-modulation synthesis. Both the theory and practice of the method are developed fairly extensively, beginning with simple but useful forms and proceeding to more complex and…

Revolutionizing the Computing Experience
- Present
See projectWe prototyped the Mac in 1980. By Moore's Law we now have a MILLION times more computing power. What can we do with it to make the computing experience a MILLION times greater? There seems to be plenty of opportunities. This paper offers seven likely areas and calls for further progress.

Leadership and Innovation
- Present
See projectThis is a white paper about the role of leadership in successful innovation, drawn from my experience. Leaders are important because "Processes don't innovate, people do." Leaders provide an overall narrative, and useful lessons can be drawn from the arts of storytelling. The paper outlines a concrete framework of five key passages in the innovation lifecycle where leadership greatly contributes to success.

These days the computer industry seems enamored of inflicting puzzles on interview candidates, so a few years ago I thought I'd roll one of my own with more interesting questions. Try it! (Note: answers may entail research. Ben North wound up writing a 31 page paper! See: http://redfrontdoor.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/triangular-numbers-20121105.pdf)
