Visited the US Capitol to learn from national leaders and the political elite. Cleaned high schools and gave food to the underprivileged community as well from 7 am to 7 pm.

  • Evaluation of a Battery Energy Storage System for Coordination of Demand Response and Renewable Energy Resources

    A small scale pilot study was conducted that investigates the interactions of renewable energy sources equipped with battery storage that included utility communication interfacing. Four sites were installed with battery-converter systems with an evaluation that included both commercial and residential applications.     A small scale pilot study was conducted that investigates the interactions of renewable energy sources equipped with battery storage that included utility communication interfacing. Four sites were installed with battery-converter systems with an evaluation that included both commercial and residential applications. The residential applications were equipped with 24 kWh rated battery storage systems with remotely controlled charge and discharge capability. The commercial and light industrial installations were evaluated using 48 kWh battery storage systems. The results using a regional time-of-use pricing structure were analyzed. Results indicate distributed generation with battery storage is positively influenced by demand response and time-of-use pricing.

A linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller is developed that includes a Kalman filter for the unmeasured states.   • Harmonics and voltage sag mitigation in a 3-phase system

    -

    I modeled and tested multiple ways to reduce short circuit currents and total harmonic distortion in a 3-phase power distribution system. My results showed that single-tuned filtering is an effective method for reducing parallel resonance at the point of common coupling and meeting reliability index standards. (MatLab, Simulink)

  • System planning for generation retirement

    Generation decisions cost money, so to demonstrate this I performed power flow simulations with transmission planning methods on an old city model of generators. I recommended constructing new 69/138 kV power lines and transformers that projected savings greater than $4 million in typical construction costs. (Power World)

  • Thyristor-controlled super-conducting magnetic energy storage

    Tariq and I investigated the benefits of new ideas with thyristor-switched magnetic energy storage. We designed a three-phase system with leading power factor, which could provide temporary power relief during a three-phase fault. We attained great insight into harmonics compensation.   • Voltage regulation design for a radial feeder

    I simulated the use of capacitor banks and switched capacitors to reduce potential outages in a model of a small neighborhood modeled in OrCAD. I successfully increased the power factor from 0.7 to 0.99 and reduced the delivery point voltage drop from 15% to 5%, in compliance with IEEE regulation standards. (OrCAD, PSPice)

  • Design and analysis of a solar panel connection to power grid

    To understand net metering connections, I modeled and evaluated the electrical power efficiency of two parallel-connected solar panels. They were connected to a DC-DC boost converter, a DC-AC boost inverter then to the power grid, and demonstrated efficiencies of 95% and 93%, respectively. (MATLAB, Simulink, Simpower)

  • Wireless sensor node with MSP430 microcontroller

    Developed a wireless sensor node using the MSP430 microcontroller that:
    1. detected vibrations on a solid surface from piezoelectric film,
    2. communicated wirelessly with another microcontroller base station and,
    3. the base station stored that data for surface/bridge vibration and safety
