Jarlath O'Carroll posted thisDo you think ageism is real or hurting your chances in the job market? Well this working paper National Bureau of Economic Research on CEO age will give you something to ponder. It reports that the average age of CEOs has risen sharply from 51 to 61 and provides the following explanation: "... rising demand for generalist human capital leads firms to trade off peak ability for accumulated experience." So if this is a concern of yours, perhaps focus on how your experience sets you apart.

Jarlath O'Carroll shared thisWeekly jobless claims fall to a 50 year low. This low fire, low hire job market is stuck or frozen for the moment. Yes, there are headlines about layoffs at Meta and elsewhere but those incidents are not widespread. However, don't let it fool you, change is coming so remember: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." — Seneca

Jarlath O'Carroll shared thisReally interesting article about AI job impacts. Certain types of careers are insulated because of their bundled tasks and tacit knowledge which favors more experienced professionals while leaving early career jobs vulnerable to AIJarlath O'Carroll shared thisReally interesting finding that the impact of AI on employment may be related to how tightly tasks are bundled within jobs. The tighter the bundle, the harder for AI to displace. "In the context of software, a contractor or junior hire generally falls into the latter group: these jobs are weak bundles, with daily work consisting mainly of writing code to spec — tasks that could be given to someone else (or AI) without any disruption to the workflow or the quality of the final product. Here, AI breaks off a large chunk of the job and leaves a role with substantially diminished scope (or obviates the need for that hire or contract). But senior developers, or coders working outside the tech industry in roles where their programming skills are combined with domain-specific expertise, tend to have jobs comprising tightly enmeshed and cross-functional tasks. Here extracting the coding part of the job from all the rest is much harder, so the bundle of tasks remains intact. Instead of becoming a competitor AI becomes an assistant, enhancing rather than eroding the job." This draws on research by Luis Garicano and others. https://lnkd.in/gZWuc_wD

Jarlath O'Carroll posted thisI listen to the Prof G Markets podcast coz their jokes are bad, they are consistent about how to invest long-term, how to raise boys (particularly relevant for me) and have great guests. Last week they had legendary investor Bill Gurley on their show and I have to recommend it from the perspective of anyone who is worried about how to adapt to the new economy. The thought that stuck with me goes something like: "Find something that you enjoy but that you enjoy so much that you would forgo watching your favorite TV show for learning more about it." That will always set you apart from your peers and AI. I love it!

Jarlath O'Carroll shared thisEveryone does not need to go to college. For some individuals, the college environment is not suitable, while others may be more inclined toward career paths not covered by a four-year school. Additionally, some might benefit from evaluating alternative career options. As AI transforms the working landscape, these discussions become increasingly relevant. The question arises: where will the jobs be for college graduates? It is clear that the job market is evolving. Here are some starting salaries for alternative careers to consider that do not require a four-year degree and the associated costs:

Jarlath O'Carroll posted thisEveryone’s playing catch-up. AI labs want AGI and profits, while leaders are just trying to find the ROI. The conflicting research proves one thing: we’re still at the very beginning of the curve.

Jarlath O'Carroll shared thisAtlassian (TEAM) announcement yesterday of a 1,600-person layoff is framed as a strategic shift toward AI and enterprise sales. However, the numbers tell a deeper story of recovery. Following a steep decline from $236 to $73 (a 67% drop), the company is under immense pressure to optimize. The 2% stock rise in response to the layoffs suggests that investors are less concerned with the "AI era" and more focused on the $230M in projected cost savings. We expect this "rebalancing" trend to continue as firms quietly restructure to protect margins under the guise of technological evolution.Jarlath O'Carroll shared thisAnother AI layoff today. Atlassian is firing about 1,600 people, saying that its needed to adapt for the AI era. “It would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn’t change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas,” CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes wrote in a memo to workers. “It does.” Blaming AI for layoffs is becoming en vogue. Jack Dorsey's block used this rationale when firing 40% of the company last month. Oracle last month said AI was allowing them to shrink software dev teams. Part of the subtext -- Atlassian's stock is down about 50% this year. https://lnkd.in/gpWZeMXRAtlassian to Reduce 1,600 Jobs in the Latest AI-Linked CutsAtlassian to Reduce 1,600 Jobs in the Latest AI-Linked Cuts

Jarlath O'Carroll posted thisI keep hearing people talk about Block and how it’s laying off 4,000 people—roughly 40% of its workforce. While some see this as a sign of things to come, I don’t think every company can (or will) follow Block and Jack Dorsey down a path of cutting 40% of their staff. I’m not downplaying the impact AI will have on productivity; I’m just saying this might not be the "efficiency play" it appears to be on the surface, despite the recent jump in stock price. Many observers suggest that Block’s bloated post-COVID workforce was the primary driver here. It appears the company maybe finally undergoing the same "right-sizing" we saw at Twitter following the Musk acquisition.

Jarlath O'Carroll liked thisJarlath O'Carroll liked thisLife wasn’t mashed potatoes last week. A few days ago, I heard a clip from PJ Fleck, and like he is known to do, he shared some great inspirational insights. One of them really stuck with me: life is all about moments and memories. Enjoying them. Soaking them in. Being fully present when you’re lucky enough to have an amazing opportunity to be part of something special. Because if you can’t stay in the moment — if you can’t reflect on the great moments and even the hard ones — life can start to feel like mashed potatoes. Hosting the Hill Builder Awards last week was one of those great moments. It was a full-circle experience to host the awards in the same place where I first met Patrick E. Donohue on December 8, 2016. Yes, I looked it up in my email. Almost 10 years later, I stood on stage with him as we shared stories about the impact of Hill Capital and presented awards to entrepreneurs who have lived out the values we care so deeply about. I simply felt grateful to be part of all of it. Grateful to be surrounded by people who truly care about entrepreneurship. People who understand that while the highlights are often what get shared, there are deep challenges every entrepreneur faces. Having someone to lean on in those moments can make or break a business. Hearing Mike Rolih share his story of GoRout was one of the highlights of the night. His mantra of “just quit tomorrow” hit home. There were multiple times when Mike thought it was all over. Then one more conversation changed everything. We were lucky enough to be one of those conversations, and it has been a joy to watch Mike share that story today and see how far he has come. I could share so many more stories, and I hope to as we continue to build Hill Capital. But what I know is this: what we have built has made a difference. A difference in the lives of so many people and I cannot wait to see what we build going forward. I know it won’t be easy. There will be days when I’ll question whether it is all worth it. When those days come, I’ll remember what Mike said. Just quit tomorrow.

My friend Arianna Huffington has brilliant insights on AI, and her recent University of Southern California baccalaureate address is worth watching. She notes that while today’s graduates have been surrounded by tech their whole lives, AI will change how we live, how we work, and our sense of who we are. The class of 2025 is entering the workforce at a time of profound transition, one where AI is redefining “I think, therefore I am.” AI’s cognitive abilities will soon outpace us, and as this technology reshapes our world, we must ask ourselves: What does it mean to be human? At the Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP AI+ Expo last week, I encouraged people to visit the drone cage display and watch closely. It was the kids, not the adults, who were dominating. They’re not waiting for permission. They’re learning, building, and shaping the future in real time. Arianna urged the Trojans to demand a future of technology that’s worthy of them and to settle for nothing less. I couldn’t agree more. There’s a new generation rising, and I have no doubt they’ll meet this moment with imagination, responsibility, and clarity. I’m inspired by them, I believe in them, and I can’t wait to see what they create. https://lnkd.in/eFRgtgaK #AI #classof2025 #graduation #USC #innovation

This AI moment is brimming with opportunity. It’s also delicate. The leaders who will thrive are those who adopt a "serendipity mindset," says Christian Busch, professor at USC Marshall School of Business. This approach requires fostering moments of happy accidents. It demands that leaders remain receptive to unexpected blessings. Your best-laid plans alone won't suffice. The pivotal moments that will define your organization will unfold in hallway conversations and spontaneous coffee chats. Are you creating space for serendipity? Check out Great Place To Work's full list of leadership skills that will make a difference in 2026: https://ukg.inc/4lipuXC

AI Tip of the Week: I was chatting with Saishridhar Balamurali about what happens when an LLM seems to go down a rabbit hole while I’m working on a problem. My usual reaction is to clear the context and start over. Sai suggested a different perspective: the model isn’t “stuck,” it’s just missing a key piece of information needed to solve the problem. Instead of restarting, pause and think about what might be missing and feed that in. That clicked for me — it opens up a whole new way to revisit some of my work-in-progress solutions! #GenerativeAI #AI #ChatGPT #MachineLearning #LLM #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureOfWork #Innovation #TechTrends #Productivity

This week at #UNGA80, PJMF President Vilas Dhar published The UN’s AI Turning Point. It calls for lasting global institutions that can govern AI in service of humanity. For the first time, 193 nations agreed to anchor artificial intelligence in science, evidence, and the public good. That’s no small feat. It’s a reminder that progress is possible when multilateral institutions and civil society push together, and why the day-to-day work we do at The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation to resource and equip those actors matters so deeply. Read Vilas’ full piece here: https://lnkd.in/gdwdf4cb

6. Oncology is becoming computational Cancer research increasingly depends on: * pattern recognition, * multimodal modeling, * genomic analysis, * AI-assisted imaging, * predictive systems, * and personalized therapeutic optimization. This is why the San Diego ecosystem matters so much. Especially given my Trophy Husband’s infrastructure exposure. Infrastructure people often see: * operational realities, * systems bottlenecks, * scaling problems, * and emerging needs before outsiders do. That perspective is strategically valuable.

Have you heard of “Q Day”? I hadn't. I had a great lunch today with Kellyn Beeck, who teaches at the Oregon Institute of Technology. We talked about Q Day, the point at which quantum computing could break much of the public-key cryptography our digital world still depends on. What struck me most was not the exact timeline. It was the lead time. Whether Q Day is a few years away or further out (prognosticators say 3 to 5 years), this feels like one of those issues where the transition may matter more than the date. By the time the threat is obvious to everyone, the organizations that waited may already be behind. This does not feel like another Y2K. It feels slower, deeper, and more structural. Not one deadline, but a long migration across infrastructure, vendors, systems, and trust models. The bigger point is that some of the most important technology shifts do not show up first as headlines. They show up first as planning problems. That seems to be where quantum security is now.

🌿 Just dropped: my podcast conversation with Biophilic Solutions on equitable, community-led climate solutions in the Amazon. It features stories from the rainforest, lessons in resilience, and a vision for climate justice. In this episode—Rooted in Wisdom: Indigenous Voices and the Amazon Rainforest—I share thoughts on how to truly address the climate crisis by centering Indigenous knowledge, land rights, and leadership. We also explore climate finance, emerging technologies, and why social integrity must go hand-in-hand with environmental integrity. Modernizing the Campus Experience at UC Riverside Transitioning a university from a "reactive" IT posture to a "proactive" one is about more than just software—it’s about operational scale. At UCR, we’ve shifted our focus toward building an intelligent campus that removes administrative friction: - Research at Speed: We’ve automated federal compliance through a "Secure Enclave," allowing researchers to bypass paperwork and get straight to the science. - Proactive Security: By streamlining our SecOps, we can now triage threats in minutes, ensuring a secure environment for our 26,000+ students. - Operational Efficiency: We are simplifying complex workflows across the board to ensure our lean team can support a growing institution. The objective is to make technology invisible so that student success and academic research can stay front and center. I took Data 100 (University of California, Berkeley's flagship data science course with 1,000+ students) as an undergrad, so building alongside Josh Grossman and the Data 100 staff team has been especially meaningful. In the past year, the course was able to offer group tutoring sessions made possible by the time savings from Pensive. As Josh put it: “By automating the mechanical parts of the course, Data 100 has actually managed to become a more human experience.” Grateful for the opportunity to give back to the Berkeley community. Huge thanks to the entire staff team for the constant feedback!

YC’s process is oddly contradictory. They demand an exhaustive amount of information from founders, including a full video pitch, yet provide zero actionable feedback when rejecting teams. For an accelerator that actively encourages re-applications, the absence of even basic guidance feels less like a meritocratic, “open review” model and more like the opaque HR machinery of Big Tech — heavy intake, vague rejections, no insight. Early-stage founders would benefit enormously from transparent critique, but YC seems unwilling to offer the same clarity they expect from applicants!

We all hear the talk about AI research scientists at well-funded SF Bay Area startups receiving new hire equity awards worth tens of millions of dollars. Now, with 75% of the Forbes AI 50 list using Pave, we have the data to prove it, and remember, 10% of people are paid above the 90th percentile. Starting in mid-March, Market Data Pro is getting its biggest upgrade yet, and you'll be able to see data like the image I shared today. Here's what's new: → Pay mix benchmarks for commission-based roles (e.g. account execs) → Target bonus % and bonus eligibility benchmarks → Base salary and total cash data for employees with and without bonuses → Multi-select filters; you can now set custom filter ranges and blend headcount, invested capital, revenue, and valuation demographics in a single view → Peer groups; benchmark against a custom list of your closest competitors Underneath all of it: we've enhanced our entire calculation engine. Results are now generated on-the-fly, there's more data across every role, and we've strengthened our data dominance rules so no single company can skew the market. The result? We can go deeper into benchmarks that were previously nearly impossible to find — with confidence in the accuracy of every number. We're walking through all of it live tomorrow. Join us.
