The University at Albany and IBM Research have a very strong partnership in AI research. Recently, IBM announced the latest evolution of our collaboration: new research projects and hardware for UAlbany’s Center for Emerging AI Systems. In 2024, we were proud to receive a prototype IBM Spyre computing cluster, which has been used to power AI research on campus. Now, we will install new Spyre accelerators that will take our capabilities even further. Our partners at IBM Research are also supporting seven new research projects – in addition to five funded last year – that leverage the computing systems to advance research in areas including mathematics, computer science, and cancer epidemiology. Read more about our partnership here: https://lnkd.in/eUM7ECvB. This work is an integral piece of our transformative AI Plus initiative, which is UAlbany’s holistic approach to integrating teaching and learning about AI throughout our academic and research initiatives. I am grateful to the entire IBM Research team, including Mukesh Khare, for their outstanding partnership, and to the UAlbany Research team, led by Vice President Kesh Kesavadas, for their great leadership.

Educational institutions have always been at the center of what we do at Handshake, and Fast Company highlights why that matters—especially as we help students navigate a workforce being redefined by AI. Our Handshake AI MOVE Fellowship connects graduate students and PhDs with frontier AI labs, giving them real-world experience in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy. I’ve been thrilled by the results so far. We’ve connected more than 1,000 Fellows to roles that not only provide a competitive wage (up to $160/hr) but also hands-on experience with AI models. Our university partners are essential to making this possible. Emory University was one of the first to champion the program. As Branden Grimmett, Ed.D. put it, the MOVE Fellowship offers students—especially those in the humanities—a new way to prepare for an AI workforce. It’s through these critical #partnerships that we’re able to work together to ensure students have the #skills and #experience to thrive in the #AI economy.

Online education is driving real financial impact, an impact that is more important now than ever before for the higher education space. The 2025 BOnES Report by UPCEA shows: 💰 Average online enterprise budgets rose to $8.1M, with gross revenues averaging $23.8M. 📈 Efficiency gains mean some enterprises are generating nearly $1M in revenue per FTE. 🎓 Undergraduate online degree offerings grew sharply (up 10% year-over-year), while graduate programs and microcredentials remain core pillars. The takeaway? Online education is no longer just about access (even though that is still a crucial component to the online space), it’s also a strategic growth engine. According to the BOnES Report, institutions that invest in scalable structures, innovative credentials, and strong governance models will be best positioned for the future. This is why Santa Clara University continues to believe and invest in Santa Clara Online. #GamingtheSystem# One of the most significant unintended consequences of NAAC's grading system is the incentive it creates for institutions to "game the system," where institutions focus their efforts on improving their scores on specific indicators rather than on holistic institutional development. The emphasis on quantitative metrics and data-driven assessments has led to a situation where institutions prioritize data collection and manipulation over genuine quality improvement initiatives. This "metric fixation" results in institutions allocating resources and efforts towards areas that are heavily weighted in the assessment process, often at the expense of other important aspects of institutional quality. The shift towards data-based quantitative indicator evaluation, while intended to increase objectivity and transparency, has inadvertently encouraged institutions to prioritize data manipulation and window dressing to meet the assessment criteria. This ultimately undermines the credibility of the accreditation process and reduces its effectiveness as a tool for quality enhancement. While NAAC has been continuously fine-tuning its assessment methodologies in response to stakeholder feedback, the fundamental problem of institutions prioritizing grades over genuine quality improvement persists.
