It’s not just a career path—it’s a superpower. It builds critical thinking, solves real-world problems, and (in my opinion) can help fix some of society’s biggest challenges. When I visit classrooms, I tell students: 👉 Supply chain is for people who hate being beaten by a problem. The best part? So many kids light up and say, “That’s me.” They are future supply chain heroes in the making. Big, heartfelt thank you to Zeeshan Ilyas for making this possible. However, the last five weeks have brought a drastic shift that directly impacts the cost of moving goods through the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles gateways. Today, March 30, 2026, the AAA average for diesel in our metro area has hit $7.499/gal. To provide full transparency, we’ve compared today’s rates against our benchmark from just five weeks ago ($5.03/gal). This represents a 49% increase in fuel overhead in a little over a month. Why Fuel Calculations Matter for Your Strategy 💯 Landed Cost Accuracy: If you are quoting customers based on February transportation indices, your margins ARE narrowing. A $370 increase per container to Phoenix adds up quickly across 10, 50, or 100 loads. 💯 Predictability: In this volatile environment, we are committed to providing weekly updates so you can adjust your logistics budgets in real-time rather than at the end of the quarter. 💯 Capacity Security: We are working closely with drivers to ensure equipment remains staged and ready. Rapid fuel spikes strain carrier capacity; our priority is keeping your freight moving without service interruptions. All said, the longer the dray, the more the fuel component exposure. This means the further the distance the delivery is from the port, the higher the increase (in dollars), will be (if comparing to a local move, like Carson or Compton). It meant a lot to hear from so many people across Poppy Bank, both in Northern and Southern California. The day started with a call from Michelle Quevedo-Penn singing happy birthday, and it only got better from there. Walking into the Brea branch and seeing it decorated, being surrounded by an amazing team who took the time to celebrate, share great food, and sing together—it’s something I won’t forget. The cake didn’t hurt either. What stood out most wasn’t just the celebration, but the people behind it. I’m thankful to be part of a team that shows up for each other in meaningful ways. Last week we talked about the gap between scrap price and pigment grade red oxide. The response confirmed what we see across the market. Most recyclers know the margin is there. They just have not seen the numbers. So here is the reality. For most operations, steel wire leaves as scrap. Around $0.22 per kg. Quick cash, no optimisation. That same wire is the primary feedstock for synthetic red iron oxide, one of the most in demand industrial pigments globally, used across paints, coatings, and construction. We build the plants that convert it. 95.27% Fe₂O₃ purity. Independently verified. Pigment grade output. Independent market data puts synthetic red iron oxide at around $1.57 per kg. Same material. Very different value. Plants sized from 1 to 5 tonnes per day. The process uses acid and neutraliser alongside your steel feedstock, inputs that are widely available and factored into the plant economics. Typical payback within 24 months, depending on tonnage and local input costs. The model is simple: You already produce the steel We provide the process The plant generates its own return We are now supplying tyre recyclers globally. And the right people will respect your ownership and proactive communication without holding it against you. The longer you wait the more damage the mistake could cause, so speak up soon and bring in others to thought partner on resolution. Not sure who needs to read this today but there are some pieces of advice I’ve always followed and this is one that has never led me astray.
