At #COP30 in Brazil, global partners announced over $2.8 billion to help smallholder farmers adapt to extreme weather and strengthen food systems. For millions of farmers across Africa, this is not an abstract discussion about future risks—it’s about daily survival and opportunity. Every season, farmers confront unpredictable rains, new pests, and degraded soils that increasingly threaten both their harvests and their families’ livelihoods.   This collective investment—building on the Gates Foundation’s $1.4 billion commitment announced during the COP30 Leaders' Summit—represents a crucial step toward ensuring farmers have the tools and technologies they need to adapt. Digital advisory services, climate-resilient crops and livestock, and context-specific soil health innovations already exist—we now need to deliver them to farmers efficiently, affordably, and at scale. The future of food security and climate resilience will be shaped in the fields of smallholder farmers—by their ingenuity, their hard work, and our collective ability to deliver solutions that work for them. Our task now is to turn these commitments into real impact on the ground, ensuring that agricultural innovations reach those who need them most. #COP30 #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateAdaptation

The world has struck a new climate deal at the COP30 summit in Brazil, which calls for a tripling of funding to help countries adapt to increasingly severe climate impacts. But countries failed to agree to a roadmap away from fossil fuels, after entrenched divisions threatened to collapse the talks. https://cnn.it/4pqJ0Cc

Running on empty: the adaptation finance gap is widening 💸🌍 UN Environment Programme Adaptation Gap Report 2025 sends a clear message. Countries are planning and acting, but money is not matching the progress. 🕵 The gap in one glance Developing nations need $310–365bn a year by 2035 for adaptation. In 2023, international public adaptation finance to developing nations was $26bn, down from $28bn in 2022. That leaves a gap of $284–339bn per year, with needs 12 to 14x current flows. The Glasgow goal to reach approx. $40bn by 2025 will be missed if trends continue. The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance of $300bn by 2035 covers both mitigation and adaptation, and is insufficient for adaptation needs alone. At a 3% inflation example, adaptation needs would reach $440bn to 520bn by 2035. 🛠️ Signs of progress 172 of 197 countries now have a national adaptation plan, strategy or policy. Yet 36 are outdated or expired, which risks ineffective action. 🌱🏙️💧 Countries reported 1,600+ adaptation actions in their first transparency reports. 23% target biodiversity and ecosystems, with 14-18% each for food and agriculture, water and sanitation, and infrastructure. Reporting on outcomes and impacts remains limited. 📈 UNFCCC funds disbursed approx. $920m in 2024, up 86% on the recent five-year average. 🌐 What must change 💳 ➜ 💚Debt dominates 58% of public adaptation finance, and non-concessional loans are rising. More grants and concessional instruments are needed to avoid deepening vulnerabilities. 🧩Private finance can help, but it is no silver bullet: potential is approx. $50bn/year by 2035 versus roughly $5bn today. Blended finance and de-risking will be key. 📘 The Baku to Belém Roadmap to $1.3tn by 2035 can guide a fair scale-up, alongside mainstreaming resilience into financial decision-making. ➡️ Bottom line: Investing in adaptation now, saves lives and money later. The world is getting ready for resilience. It just needs the finance to match the ambition. 💡 What is one concrete step your organisation will take in 2026 to move from plans to funded adaptation projects? Fresh insights into global poverty trends are now available. The September 2025 global poverty update from The World Bank includes new and revised data: the Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) database now contains over 2,500 survey-year observations from 172 countries-, incorporates a new methodology for estimating poverty in countries that do not have data in PIP, and updates the regional classification to align with the World Bank’s. As a result, global extreme poverty is projected to decrease from 10.3% in 2024 to 10.1% in 2025 (using a $3.00 (2021 PPP) poverty line). Authored by Jonas Helth Lønborg, Martha Viveros, R.Andres Castaneda Aguilar, Christoph Lakner, Gabriel Lara Ibarra, Minh Nguyen, and Daniel Gerszon Mahler, this World Bank blog presents key findings from this latest update: https://shorturl.at/BeTs6
