African Conservation Schools
Conservation schools inspire and provide communities with education opportunities and resources in exchange for the community’s participation in conservation. Setting aside land to protect wildlife or working with park rangers to stop poachers are examples of how communities are participating.

Setting aside land to protect wildlife or working with park rangers to stop poachers are examples of how communities are participating.
In priority landscapes, AWF builds or helps rebuild schools, develops conservation education curricula, provides supplemental training to teachers, and ensures the schools will last with the support from local businesses and missions. School locations are selected based on how critical the conservation need is.
AWF does not own any schools, directly operate any schools, or have any teachers or principals directly employed by AWF. Our goal is simply to support the foundation for education and provide knowledge that will improve lives for people and wildlife simultaneously.Other creatorsSee project -
Accounting System Implementation and Centralization Project
- Present
Internet connectivity in Africa, and specifically Nairobi, has improved dramatically during the past few years. Further, banks that span national borders have emerged with reliable online access and the ability to transact electronically. Further, banks that span national borders have emerged with reliable online access and the ability to transact electronically. To leverage these changes, AWF implemented a new accounting system (Serenic Navigator) that includes electronic workflow, paperless transactions, and real-time remote access to data.
This system created new possibilities for AWF to move beyond some of the traditional problems and risks of remote field office operations in developing countries. NGOs have typically had two operating options for remote locations: (1) over-invest in field office administrative staffing to achieve proper segregation of duties; or (2) accept extremely slow operational standards with paperwork constantly routed to a central office. AWF is eliminating both problems.
AWF is in the process of centralizing key finance and administrative functions away from field offices to AWF’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and its corporate office in Washington, DC. Utilizing a low band-width web portal, remotely based staff have the ability to complete all elements of financial transactions, approvals flow via email and budget control is automated. These changes ensure proper segregation of responsibilities without unnecessary replication of position, and without tedious/time consuming/expensive movement of paper. In the longer run this strategy is helping AWF to improve its speed of implementation, decrease its overhead costs, and prime itself for geographic and budget expansion.
