Meta is cutting 8,000 jobs on May 20, 2026, but for many Black women, we’ve been experiencing these cuts for over a year—there’s no sympathy for latecomers. 📉 Reuters confirmed the first wave of Meta layoffs, impacting 10% of its global workforce. The Meta Reality of 2026: • Wave 1: 8,000 jobs (May 20) • Wave 2: Rumored 20% total cuts (16,000+ people) • The Industry: 80,000+ tech jobs lost in Q1 alone Here’s what they won’t say: while headlines panic now, many Black women were pushed out as DEI budgets were gutted and roles cut over the last year. On this Juneteenth, we honor the legacy of Black women who turned barriers into blueprints—from healing bodies as physicians in wartime, to reshaping boardrooms, courtrooms, classrooms, and stages. In a world where we’ve had to work twice as hard to get half as far, we keep showing up, not just to take our seat at the table—but to build new ones, draped in excellence, legacy, and unshakable grace. Double standards and higher scrutiny: Black women are often held to stricter standards and judged more harshly for the same behaviors or performance as their peers. Ambition can be misread as aggression, and confidence as arrogance. Isolation and tokenism: Many Black women find themselves as the “Only” in the room—whether it’s the only woman, the only Black person, or both. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, hyper-visibility, and pressure to represent an entire group. Barriers to advancement: A Harvard study found that Black women who start their careers surrounded by mostly white colleagues are significantly less likely to be promoted and more likely to leave their jobs. Performance evaluations often reflect bias, labeling them as low performers despite strong contributions. Lack of sponsorship and support: While mentorship is helpful, sponsorship—having someone advocate for your advancement—is often missing. Without it, Black women can be overlooked for stretch assignments or leadership roles. Attacks on DEI and psychological safety: With growing backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, many Black women are navigating workplaces where their identities and contributions are undervalued or politicized. Pay inequity and burnout: The racial and gender pay gap persists, and the emotional labor of navigating bias, code-switching, and proving oneself repeatedly can lead to exhaustion and disengagement.

Representation is a prerequisite, not an afterthought. Before I apply for any role, I do my homework. I check the team photos, the leadership pages, and the "About Us" gallery. If there isn’t a single Black person (or only one) I already know what the environment might look like for me. It’s a vetting process that protects my time and my peace. Black women began 2025 with an unemployment rate of 5.4%. By the end of the year, this rate surged to 7.3%, while the national average stands at 4.4%. Let’s Discuss: New labor data reveals a troubling trend: Black women’s unemployment rose sharply throughout 2025, widening both racial and gender gaps in the job market. The latest U.S. jobs report shows: - Women accounted for nearly all net employment losses last month. - 91,000 women left the labor force. - Meanwhile, 10,000 men joined it. These losses were disproportionately felt by Black women, who are also experiencing longer periods of unemployment on average. When the labor market tightens, inequities widen. Now is the time to be an ally in action. If you know a Black woman looking for a job, consider making the introduction, sending the referral, or sharing the opportunity. Say Yes Buffalo Back From PTO & Recharged — And Here’s What I Learned I’m officially back from PTO, and refreshed, recharged, moisturized, and grateful for the chance to unplug for a moment. As Black women in leadership, we carry a lot: our teams, our families, our communities, our deadlines, and sometimes the unspoken emotional labor of holding everything together. So when we take time off, it’s not just a vacation, it’s restoration. It’s a reset. It’s a reminder that we cannot pour from an empty cup, and stepping back into work today, I’m bringing some intentional lessons with me: Tips for Coming Back From PTO Without Losing Your Peace 1️⃣ Ease back in, you don’t have to respond to everything in one day. Permit yourself to catch up gradually. Block a little time on your calendar, prioritize what actually needs you, and let the rest wait its turn. 2️⃣ Protect your energy. Coming back refreshed doesn’t mean letting stress jump you at the door. Keep your boundaries firm. Not every email is urgent, and not every situation is yours to fix. 3️⃣ Carry your vacation energy forward. Maybe it was rest, maybe it was sunshine, maybe it was silence. Whatever filled you up, find small ways to keep it with you. Soft life is not just a place… It’s a practice. I’m grateful for the break and just as grateful to return grounded, focused, and ready to serve with purpose. Thank you to everyone patient while I was offline. Only 2 Black women currently run Fortune 500 companies. I felt genuinely excited seeing Latriece Watkins named President and CEO of Sam’s Club because moments like this still feel… rare. Right now, women lead about 11 percent of Fortune 500 companies, and only 2 of those women are Black. It means we still have a long way to go. I know someone will read this and comment, “The most qualified person gets the job,” but if meritocracy actually worked, the C-suite would be far more diverse than it is today. Latriece worked her way up inside Walmart over decades, which is the part people should pay close attention to. We are often told to stay loyal, build credibility, and wait our turn, yet many women of color stall at the director or senior director level. A few years ago, when Nike appointed a CEO after 32 years inside the company, I remember thinking that same result for women and women of color. So when someone does reach the highest seat after building REAL enterprise experience, it feels like a crack in a very rigid ceiling. Sidebar: This is not about entrepreneurship, so feel free to skip this if corporate leadership is not your lane. As we close out Black History Month in a few short days; I’ve been reflecting a lot. As we all know, the last couple of years; we’ve seen a disproportionate number of Black women impacted by layoffs and career disruption. And while resilience is something we are known to carry well… access to resources isn’t always equitable. Career coaching can be transformative, but I'm also realistic about the fact that it’s also an investment. And not everyone is in a season where that investment feels accessible. Here’s what I’d like to do. The first 5 women who inbox me will receive a complimentary 30-minute mini coaching session. (due to bandwidth I can't offer more slots at this time).
