Community foundations help shape how affordable housing gets financed – and our partner, San Francisco Foundation, highlights this work in a recent post featuring their investment in our Building Impact Initiative (BII). BII brings together community foundations including San Francisco Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, alongside corporate leaders like Apple, U.S. Bank, and PNC, and philanthropic partners The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and The Grove Foundation – aligning capital to expand affordable housing across the region. Years ago, our team committed to approaching grantmaking through a customer service lens. That commitment continues to guide our work today, especially as we plan toward our sunset. For us, sustainable grantmaking means being responsive, offering multi-year and flexible support, and reducing friction so partners can focus on their work rather than our processes. We appreciate the Schott Foundation for Public Education for lifting up these practices and encouraging reflection across the field.

Feb. 19 donor briefing: One Year In: Impact of Increased Immigration Enforcement It’s not just Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, and Memphis. In the past year there have also been hundreds of ICE abductions and arrests in San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Francisco counties here in California, taking place at courthouses, at required immigration check-ins and interviews, and on public streets. Often, the only thing between an immigrant and detention or deportation is a lawyer. United Coalition for Immigrant Services brings together 16 nonprofit legal service providers to deliver free and low-cost immigration legal support, coordinate capacity, and protect the stability, health, and economic security of immigrant children, families, and older adults. Join us for a special briefing for donors, philanthropic advisors, and foundation staff to learn more about the current status and recent impacts of immigration enforcement here in our home communities. Sharing the Sustainable Grantmaking Benchmark as a resource for funders interested in reviewing how grantmaking structures support nonprofit resilience and sustainability.

The Level Up pledge reflects a growing recognition across philanthropy that the moment calls for more than caution or incrementalism. Communities are navigating sustained harm and uncertainty, and funders have a responsibility to respond with greater urgency, follow-through, and transparency. For Grove, signing the pledge aligns with how we approach our work: deploying resources with intention, moving capital in ways that reflect trust and equity, and holding ourselves accountable for how those commitments show up in practice. As a spenddown foundation, we see this as part of our obligation to act decisively and in alignment with our values. When the government targets charitable foundations and organizations because it disagrees with their values, it undermines the stability of our democracy. If charitable organizations can be silenced, faith-based groups and other civic institutions could be next. As The Grove Foundation moves through our final years, we feel a special responsibility to speak clearly: fundamental American freedoms—like the freedom of speech and the freedom to give—must be protected, not weakened. We join others in forcefully condemning recent acts of political violence. These attacks have no place in a democracy and threaten the fundamental freedoms on which our nation is built. Freedom of speech and the freedom to give are cornerstones of a healthy society. No one should fear for their safety for expressing their views, and charitable organizations should not be attacked for carrying out their missions. Attempts to silence voices, criminalize differing viewpoints, or misrepresent the work of philanthropy undermine our democracy and harm us all. At Grove, we listen to and stand with the communities we serve. Philanthropy exists to strengthen communities and bring people together.
