The transition to clean energy systems is increasingly understood as a matter of economic resilience and strategic competitiveness – and many Asian countries have already shifted from debate to deployment, writes Paul Polman in a new piece for The B Team.  The recent conflict in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have rattled markets and forced countries to adapt quickly to changes in fossil fuel supply. But these shocks highlight a structural shift already underway, writes Polman (#BTeam Leader, investor, philanthropist, and former CEO of Unilever): “In a world repeatedly reminded of its vulnerability to energy shocks, from supply disruptions to geopolitical conflicts, the appeal of abundant domestic electricity is becoming difficult for even the most stubborn governments to ignore.” Polman reflects on recent trips to Asian cities, where “the conversation is about grid connections, permitting queues, workforce pipelines and financing structures, the ordinary work of building a system that is already underway.” Read his full reflections in The B Team's monthly newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eCPE9F5x #ElectricAdvantage

📢 Today at the #GreenGrowthSummit 2026, @CLG Europe launches a new statement calling for urgent action to scale up #cleanelectrification across Europe. As global competition intensifies and other major economies move rapidly to capture the benefits of electrification, Europe risks falling behind. For too long, the EU has remained highly dependent on imported and volatile fossil fuels. Clean electrification offers a more secure, innovative and predictable energy system, reducing exposure to fossil fuel price shocks for households and businesses. But to unlock these benefits, Europe must overcome persistent barriers: high upfront investment needs, regulatory instability, grid bottlenecks, and insufficiently stable economic signals that hold back deployment. Our statement outlines 5 priority actions for EU leaders to help Europe seize the electrification opportunity and strengthen Europe’s long‑term competitiveness: ✅ A stronger EU‑level strategic approach to clean industrial leadership ✅ A 2040 target for 50% electrification of final energy use ✅ A 2040 energy efficiency goal to guide the phase‑down of fossil fuels ✅ Stable and effective economic signals, including a robust EU ETS ✅ A major push to digitalise electricity distribution networks to improve visibility, flexibility and grid resilience These actions can help ensure Europe builds an energy system that is affordable for consumers, attractive for investors and resilient in the face of global competition. 📄 Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/eyeNiESE Watch the space: Our partners from We Mean Business Coalition also launched a foundational paper on electrification. • “The question is no longer whether the transition will happen. It is whether you help shape the new industrial system, or inherit one designed for you” – Paul Polman (#BTeam Leader, investor, philanthropist, and former CEO of Unilever) “In a world repeatedly reminded of its vulnerability to energy shocks, from supply disruptions to geopolitical conflicts, the appeal of abundant domestic electricity is becoming difficult for even the most stubborn governments to ignore.” As war in the Middle East rattles global energy markets, highlighting the fragility of the world’s fossil-fuel system, Paul Polman reflects on how Asia is rewiring the global economy. 🇪🇺 Europe’s security and sovereignty hinge on building a more competitive and resilient economy, moving away from volatile fossil imports towards clean energy.     Today, 103 companies and investors across Europe signed an open letter calling on EU leaders to maintain a strong and credible EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).    Signatories include major multinationals, new innovators and investors across Europe’s heavy industry, manufacturing, retail, energy and technology sectors, including Tata Steel, Volvo Cars, EDF, Ørsted, Heidelberg Materials, Vattenfall, Holcim, SSAB, Salzgitter AG, Ingka Group | IKEANordea Asset Management, Outokumpu, VELUX and Novonesis - as well as leading Cleantech innovators including cylib GmbH, Reverion, Sunfire, GravitHy, Stegra, CorPower Ocean and Rondo Energy.    The Coalition coordinated the letter with Business for CBAM CoalitionCorporate Leaders Groups #CLGEurope and Cleantech for Europe. It highlights why the ETS remains a cornerstone of Europe’s competitiveness, investment certainty and industrial decarbonization.    For two decades, the system has helped drive billions of euros into clean technologies, rewarding early movers and creating market demand for European innovation. Weakening it now would risk undermining investment certainty precisely when Europe needs it most. 🔗 Read the open letter: https://lnkd.in/emAgK5un   #EUIndustry #ETS #EnergySecurity    Christian Stocker, Bart De Wever, Andrej Plenkovic, Nikos Christodoulides, Micheál Martin, Petteri Orpo, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Kyriakos Mitsotakis Giorgia Meloni, Evika Silina, Gitanas Nausėda, Luc Frieden, Rob Jetten, Pedro Sánchez
