IKEA Switzerland has become the first market to contract social enterprises BAND and VEBO as partners in its kitchen installation and repair services. Both organisations employ people with disabilities as a core part of their workforce. Each installation visit pairs a licensed supervisor with a person with a disability, a model that delivers commercial-grade service while opening access to skilled trades for people who are often excluded from them. This is the first result of the Social Enterprise Partnership Programme, developed with IKEA Social Entrepreneurship and Yunus Social Innovation. Belgium, Italy, Poland, Spain, and South Korea are next. The goal: at least one contracted social enterprise in each of our 31 markets.

Some come with wedding vows. 💙💛 On 27 June, IKEA Retail Sweden will invite couples to say “I do” in five IKEA stores across the country, transforming everyday spaces into places for lifelong memories. We believe that togetherness begins when we open our hearts and say yes: to love, to community and to celebrating life’s moments together. The weddings will take place in Malmö, Linköping, Jönköping, Uddevalla and Karlstad, where couples will be able to marry in a unique IKEA setting, celebrate with loved ones and enjoy a summer meal together after the ceremony. Not every need for support is visible. 🌻 That’s why IKEA Finland is introducing the internationally recognised Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme, giving customers a discreet way to show that they may need a little more time, understanding or assistance during their visit. The sunflower symbol is voluntary and free to use, helping make non-visible disabilities more visible, on the customer’s own terms. IKEA co-workers in Finland will be trained to recognise the symbol and support customers in a calm, respectful and individual way. It’s one more step towards making the IKEA experience more accessible, whether online, in-store or in every customer meeting. Who knew flatpack furniture could become a competitive sport? At this year’s recent Grand Designs Live event in the UK, the Flatpack World Championships, where participants race against the clock to assemble flatpack furniture, highlighted that IKEA products are about more than assembly, they're smart design in action. Watching participants race against the clock to build IKEA products from the iconic BILLY bookcase to bedside tables, was both entertaining and a reminder of something central to Democratic Design: creating products that are functional, accessible, and made for the many people.
