Thank you Omidyar Network for being amongst the first to back this body of work!
🇪🇸 Last week, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain will implement a new system to measure how digital platforms fuel hate and political division. This idea has been years in the making: In 2023, Omidyar Network partner Ashoka and a coalition of social entrepreneurs were recognized as winners of the Future of Data Challenge at SXSW for presenting a similar framework. Since then, Helena Puig Larrauri and the team at Build Up ^ have transformed that concept into a tested and actionable approach — engaging with global decision-makers and proving the system works. Spain’s decision is why Omidyar Network invests in early innovations — because new models of accountability start as bold ideas *long* before they become reality on the ground. We’re grateful to Helena, Konstanze Frischen, and the broader coalition for their innovation and leadership, and encouraged by Spain’s latest milestone in a global effort to keep digital platforms accountable! Tackling the root causes of complex challenges like climate change, inequality, or public health requires engaging a constellation of stakeholders. But engagement is not a single act, it's a spectrum. With CoCreative's expertise, and referencing examples from several Ashoka Fellows who participated in our #Globalizer scaling program, this article explains engagement as a five-level staircase. Each step represents a different level of stakeholder participation and ownership. Read more ⬇️ Authored by Russ Gaskin and Akash Bhalerao. https://lnkd.in/eaDX8z5p

An idea whose time has come is picking up steam in Spain! Spain announced yesterday it would be deploying a "hate and polarization footprint", among other important measures, to counter online social division. This is a welcomed step in the direction of ensuring tech amplifies human agency, our vision at Ashoka. And it is why, for the last four years, we have partnered with Ashoka Fellow Helena Puig Larrauri of Build Up ^ to bring the idea of a #PolarizationFootprint to life. We're excited to continue this journey with Helena, Guy and the team to bring this powerful instrument across Europe and the world. Spanish president Pedro Sánchez announced today five measures to counter the negative impacts of social media on society, including a ban on social media for under 16s and a national "hate and polarization footprint" to track, quantify and expose how digital platforms fuel division and amplify hate. Last year, we completed a measure of the polarization footprint in Kenya. We argue that a polarization footprint offers a crucial metric both to build digital literacy of EU citizens and to provide an evidence base for platforms and regulators tasked to enforce the Digital Services Act. We hope this work can continue to inspire and support the Spanish government, and many others, to do the important work of countering the negative impact of social media on our societies and building a digital ecosystem that is conducive to pluralism and peace. https://lnkd.in/ehEWeqVY
