A very special night for me at Glasgow’s City Halls with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. 33 years ago, I wrote my University dissertation about Ian Whyte. He was a Scottish conductor and composer and he founded the BBC SSO. Part of the dissertation analysed his Violin Concerto which had never been performed, not until tonight. I just wish my Dad had been there with me to hear it. He’d be pleased I’m not perming my hair any more like the 21 year old student version of me!

  • 🥳 Happy Birthday to one of Scotland’s boldest composers, Sir James MacMillan! Our Scottish premiere performance of MacMillan’s Concerto for Orchestra 'Ghosts' is now on BBC iPlayer. MacMillan describes 'Ghosts' as music "haunted by other, earlier musical spirits and memories", including Debussy and Beethoven, folk music from Scotland, an eastern European hymn and various popular influences. ✅ “A high energy helter-skelter" - Bachtrack ✅ “A bespoke vehicle for the virtuosity of orchestral players” – The Herald ✅ “An oasis of tranquillity" – Edinburgh Music Review ✅ “MacMillan at his most approachable... The BBC SSO played it quite brilliantly for him.” – Vox Carnyx #classicalmusic #orchestra #newmusic #composer BBC Scotland https://lnkd.in/enhKQ28s

  • Claudia Winkleman hosts two special Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 26 July featuring the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, BBC Symphony Chorus, guest vocalists and a host of The Traitors stars. The hit BBC TV series, which drew in an average audience of more than 10 million for Series 3, features a variety of classical music to punctuate the action from the Scottish Highlands castle. The Traitors Prom will playfully feature these well-known classical works from composers including Mozart, Puccini and Tchaikovsky alongside so called ‘Traitors Pop’: gothic and symphonic versions of chart tracks by artists including Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Britney Spears and The Hanging Tree, which plays a very special part in every series of The Traitors. The Proms Faithful will also get the chance to hear Sam Watts’s original music from the series, with the world premiere of two specially extended orchestral versions of that famous theme tune. The matinee will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds at 3pm on Saturday 26 July and on BBC Radio 2 at 8pm on 24 August. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-uz378N
