What does workplace sexual harassment do to a person? It shows up in their confidence, their sense of safety, and their will to stay in the industry. A new 21-country study by BBC Media Action, WAN-IFRA Women in News, and City, St George’s, University of London, finds that nearly half of media professionals who took the survey don't feel emotionally safe at work, a figure that mirrors harassment rates almost exactly. The 2025 report on sexual harassment in media is out now - with findings, insights, and concrete recommendations for building safer, more inclusive newsrooms. 🔗Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ezztWNeS Illustrations by Amina Amoniak #mediadevelopment #mentalhealthawarenessweek #jobsatisfaction #workplacesafety #BBCMediaAction WAN-IFRA WIN WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers City St George’s, University of London

“This profession is very challenging, especially as a female.” A new global report reveals little has changed in the last five years for female journalists – they continue to face disproportionate levels of harassment and abuse. BBC Media Action worked with WAN-IFRA Women in News and City St Georges, University of London to survey female journalists around the world, including in Bangladesh, to expose the true scale of sexual harassment in media workplaces. In Bangladesh alone, 15% of journalists report workplace sexual harassment, with women experiencing far more verbal, online, and physical attacks than men. We’re supporting female journalists with the skills and confidence to respond to harassment. A safe, respectful media workplace should be non-negotiable. A new study by BBC Media Action, WAN-IFRA WIN, and City St George’s, University of London, finds that the vast majority of sexual harassment cases in newsrooms still go unreported. Structural barriers affect accountability across media workplaces – with women and gender non-conforming professionals disproportionately affected. The consequences are far-reaching and limit who can participate, lead, and shape editorial decisions. The findings of this report will help inform future policies and protections across the media sector and help build a safer environment for all. 🔗Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ezztWNeS Illustrations by Amina Amoniak #sexualharassment #mediadevelopment #newsroomsafety #BBCMediaAction WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers

“The fight is not only against corruption, it is also against disinformation.” Shalveen Chand, editor at the Samoa Observer, recently joined a training programme in Fiji, where Flora Carmichael from BBC Verify teamed up with BBC Media Action to support Pacific Island journalists. Over two weeks, journalists were introduced to verification tools used by BBC News’ specialist BBC Verify team to help them better identify disinformation and challenge false claims. “It's provided us with a lot to think about, especially in the online space where everyone claims to be a journalist.” said Matthew Vari, digital director at Post-Courier Daily. From deepfakes to digital abuse, technology is transforming how women are targeted - and how truth is challenged. And the danger is not limited to these attacks – it is also found in the silence they are designed to produce from their targets. Artificial intelligence is now making easier to manufacture, scale, and sustain that silence. The urgency of these shifts was at the centre of discussions at the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), Women Holding the Line: Storytelling & Safety in an Age of AI, a side event convened in partnership with BBC Media Action and PeacePays.ai. Around 60 leaders from across the globe, journalists, activists, technologists, policymakers, and funders gathered to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping both risk and resilience for women in public life. 85% of women globally have experienced or witnessed digital violence. Today BBC Media Action is bringing together an expert panel at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Global Partnerships Conference to explore how technology can reshape narratives and power structures toward a gender-transformative future – not only mitigating harm but challenging the norms and systems that underpin violence against women and girls. As digital spaces continue to shape how we live, work, and connect, conversations around online safety, accountability, and safeguarding have never been more important. Expect insights from global partners working to address this rapidly evolving challenge: Alexandra Robinson, UNFPA, Technical Advisor for gender-based violence, Leonora Tima, Gender Rights in Tech (GRIT), Founder and our own Muthuri Kathure, BBC Media Action Senior Advisor Information Integrity, with host: BBC Global Correspondent, Megha Mohan #GlobalPartnershipConference #TechnologyAndGBV #OnlineSafety #GenderEquality #TFGBV

We’ll be deep diving into technology-facilitated gender-based violence tomorrow at our side event at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Global Partnership Conference. We’re thrilled that global experts and partners from across sectors are coming together to share knowledge, challenges, and solutions in pursuit of safer digital environments for women and girls. While technology can facilitate harm, it also has the potential to support prevention, protection, reporting, and education when designed and governed responsibly. Thank you in advance to our panellists taking part in this important discussion: Alexandra Robinson, UNFPA, Technical Advisor for gender-based violence, Leonora Tima, Gender Rights in Tech (GRIT), Founder and our own Muthuri Kathure, @BBCMediaAction, Senior Advisor Information Integrity, and our host, BBC Global Correspondent Megha Mohan #EndGBV #DigitalRights #OnlineSafety #GlobalPartnershipConference

"Once the truth is out, it’s harder to ignore.” Mercy Mulenga is a journalist at Yar FM Radio in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province. She trained under BBC Media Action’s MOTO Initiative, which supports female journalists in developing public interest journalism skills. “I'm committed to covering the issues that matter most to my community, ranging from health and family planning to the environment and social costs of mining,” says Mercy Recently, she investigated a toxic waste leak from a local mine into the Kafue River, uncovering severe pollution that left local farmers with poisoned vegetables and no compensation. “I was shocked when I saw how bad the river and the land were polluted,” says Mercy. “The investigation revealed not only environmental destruction, but also a painful gap in justice and compensation for the affected farmers.” Click here to learn more about our work📱 https://bbc.in/4cR8DaD #BBCMediaAction #MediaForGood #WomenInJournalism #PursuitOfTruth #WorldPressFreedomDay Mercy Mulenga

From forecasts to frontline action! 🌏 We brought together over 25 government and non-government organisations and around 50 hydrologists, meteorologists, communicators and development professionals from across Asia-Pacific for a regional workshop, Communication for Action: Strengthening Weather and Climate Information Services (WCIS), last month. Aimed to strengthen regional collaboration and partnerships, this event created an engaging platform to share learning, and explore how effective communication can help communities better prepare for climate and weather-related risks.
