We are pleased to announce that Glenn Hinds Motivation & Coaching Consultants has been awarded the Public Health Agency (PHA) contract to design & deliver three-day Level 1 Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshops across Northern Ireland. This training will be provided FREE of charge to practitioners working in: Smoking Cessation Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Substance Misuse Services is open to colleagues in both the statutory & community/voluntary sectors. Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, person-centred approach that supports people in exploring & resolving ambivalence about change. It is internationally recognised as an evidence-based method & has been shown to improve engagement, treatment adherence, & long-term outcomes in health, social care, & community settings. The decision to commission this training is underpinned by the Department of Health’s 10-year strategy, Preventing Harm, Empowering Recovery (2021–2031), which highlights workforce development as a key driver in tackling the harms associated with substance use. The strategy commits to ensuring the workforce is confident, trauma-informed & equipped with effective communication skills to reduce stigma & support recovery. This programme also supports the Making Life Better public health framework, the Mental Health Strategy 2021–2031, & Protect Life 2, N Ire.’s suicide prevention strategy. Each of these emphasises early intervention, compassionate care, & skilled support. Research consistently demonstrates the value of MI in these areas. Studies show that MI enhances people’s readiness to change health-related behaviours, reduces relapse, & improves outcomes across smoking cessation, substance misuse, & mental health care. By embedding MI skills across the workforce, this programme helps strengthen services & empower recovery. Through this Level 1 course, participants will: Build confidence in applying MI’s four core processes – engaging, focusing, evoking & planning. Practise core skills for guiding conversations about change. Strengthen their ability to support people in challenging circumstances with empathy & effectiveness. We understand the demands of frontline services. Therefore, training will be delivered multiple times throughout the year, offering a range of dates & formats to give practitioners & teams real choice & flexibility. Workshops are designed to be highly interactive, with group sizes that create a supportive learning environment. We can also discuss tailored sessions for whole teams & opportunities for individuals & small groups of staff to fit around service needs & staff timetables. Today’s training course was distinctive because the client requested an IPAF eLearning MEWPS for Managers course at our satellite centre in Hitchin, along with the presence of an invigilator to assist students with any questions or technical difficulties they might encounter. Will theory led courses be a thing of the past in the coming years ?? What is MEWPS for Mangers course? MEWPs for Managers is aimed at those who plan, supervise or manage work at height with Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). * Course Content:
Covers health and safety regulations, accident prevention, safe operating procedures, pre-use checks, and the responsibilities of managers regarding MEWP use. 
 * Upon successful completion, participants receive an internationally recognized IPAF certificate, valid for 5 years. Those with a valid IPAF Powered Access Licence (PAL) for operating MEWPs can have the MEWPs for Managers category added to their PAL card.

The Hidden Trap of Self-Deprecating Humour In a client speaking coaching session this week, we discussed the impact of self-deprecating humour. On stage, self-deprecating humour feels like a shortcut to connection, it gets the audience laughing, it softens edges. But it can just as quickly become a mask, hiding confidence behind a joke. While it can momentarily endear you to others, it dims your brilliance. Instead of amplifying your voice, it reduces your authority. Every self-deprecating remark is a withdrawal from the credibility bank. One or two might slip past unnoticed, but a pattern begins to define how the audience measures your worth. Audiences may laugh, but they also listen. And what they hear is you telling them not to take you seriously. Particularly for women, those words can reinforce cultural narratives that already undervalue their authority. True growth as a speaker is about learning to own your story without apology. Humour can uplift without undercutting your intelligence or presence. Ask yourself: is this joke connecting, or is it covering? Is it an intentional choice, or an unconscious habit that keeps you small? Over time, the impact compounds. Audiences remember the tone as much as the content. If your humour consistently points the arrow back at your flaws, that’s the brand that lingers. The shift comes when you move from self-deprecating to self-aware. From mocking yourself to laughing with others. That’s when humour empowers rather than diminishes. Your voice carries authority, resonance, and wit. Use it to lift yourself and your message higher, not to chip away at your own foundations. Cut the habit of putting yourself down. Edit your humour so it supports your story rather than sabotages it. Especially for women, this matters. Because every word shapes how the room holds you. Choose humour that builds, not breaks. This is the work I do: helping speakers and leaders strip away habits that shrink them and step into choices that amplify their brilliance. An exciting book launch at The Manchester Mindfulness Festival!   "Having twice run the Innovations in Mindfulness Awards to promote best practice in making mindfulness inclusive and accessible to new audiences, The Mindfulness Initiative is launching, at the MMF on 18 October, its new Innovations in Mindfulness Workbook - Sharing Your Treasure.   Structured around an Innovations Mandala, the workbook draws upon the learnings from working with the principles of innovation training in various settings. In the spirit of collaboration, the content of the workbook has been tested, discussed and iterated in a pilot online course attended by both experienced and developing mindfulness teachers. Our aim is to support teachers to safely work beyond the traditional delivery model of an 8-week course - taking an inside-out approach to innovation. ​ ​This session is led by Vin Harris of the Hart Knowe Trust and Menka Sanghvi, MI's Innovation Policy Lead. Vin is a successful entrepreneur who has studied and practiced meditation for over 45 years and worked with the MI to co-author the Workbook. Menka Sanghvi, a mindfulness researcher and writer, developed the MI's Fieldbook for Mindfulness Innovators and has recently released her new book entitled 'Your Best Digital Life'. The session will give a taster of the course and look at how the Workbook and Fieldbook, in tandem, support the developing field of mindfulness teaching."
