About us

With almost 300 bookshops and employing over 3000 booksellers , Waterstones is the leading high street bookseller in the UK and Ireland. Amsterdam and Brussels play host to Waterstones’ European presence, and two further jewels in the bookseller’s crown are London’s Hatchards and Dublin’s legendary bookshop Hodges Figgis. Waterstones has opened several new shops over the last few years and invested in existing locations. The company also achieved a turnaround of fortunes for their online platform, Waterstones.com. In 2018 Waterstones further acquired British bookshop chain Foyles. Good bookselling and bookseller expertise is the driving force behind Waterstones’ bookshops, and every year Waterstones runs thousands of author events across the country from weekly story time sessions and book clubs to author talks and large book signings. One of the biggest events of the year is the prestigious Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, voted for by Waterstones’ expert booksellers. Other notable activity include the Waterstones Book Of The Year announcement and support for the Waterstones Children’s Laureate.

October 2025 saw the first ever Waterstones Barista Championship, with over 60 trailblazers whittled down in regional heats to a selection of eight for the final. Each of them were asked to design a unique, specialty, hand-crafted beverage, based on a book they love. The judges were blown away by the creativity, technique and skill employed and we’re delighted to share that 1st place went to Christine from Exeter whose creation, ‘Carrots! Carrots!’, was inspired by LM. Montgomery’s classic Anne of Green Gables. The drink itself was an iced carrot cake latte with homemade carrot cake syrup, organic carrot juice, organic whole milk and Monmouth espresso; topped with cream cheese cold foam and a replica of the signature topping from our best-selling ‘Ultimate Carrot Cake’. Huge thanks to our partners and suppliers at La Marzocco, Union Hand-Roasted Coffee, Minor Figures, Well Grounded Jobs CIC, and Cakesmiths, who all attended and provided prizes, judging support, equipment; everything we needed for the perfect event. And almost exactly a month later another of our finalists, Laura from Canterbury, was announced as UK La Marzocco Barista Hero for 2025. A fantastic achievement and yet another example of the depth of talent in our Waterstones cafe teams across the country. Congratulations to them all and huge thanks to Emma Smith, Head of Cafés, who made it all possible.

We are thrilled to announce the shortlist for the fourth Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize! 🎉 Championed by booksellers across the country, this year's shortlist includes our first ever translated nomination and represents once more the exciting scope of contemporary storytelling, taking us from an artist's household in 1920s Provence to a deliciously wry study in family, Catholicism and queer identity in present-day Ireland, and from the life of an old man and his dog in northernmost Sweden to the mythical banks of the Saraswati River, by the way of a formative South of France summer holiday and an electrifying group portrait of three generations of Irish women: https://exyu.short.gy/WDFP #WDFP
