Dongfeng Motor has unveiled a timeline for the mass production of solid-state batteries, with the company aiming to deliver 50,000 vehicles equipped with its in-house developed solid-state batteries by 2027.
Zhang Wei, new battery operations manager at the Advanced Technology Research Institute under Dongfeng Group's R&D Academy, announced the target at the 21st Shanghai International Automobile Manufacturing Technology & Equipment and Material Exhibition held on Wednesday.
Dongfeng plans to roll out 100 solid-state battery demonstration vehicles by the end of this year, Zhang said, according to a report by China Star Market.
The company will achieve small-scale mass production of solid-state battery vehicles around 2030, and reach large-scale mass production and widespread adoption around 2035, according to Zhang.
Dongfeng's solid-state batteries have entered a key validation phase. The company completed winter vehicle testing of its 350 Wh/kg solid-state battery in January this year, and plans to achieve in-vehicle application in the fourth quarter.
The 350 Wh/kg solid-state battery has already achieved stable batch production, Zhang said.
From the electrodes and solid-state electrolyte to full battery pack integration, all key technologies were developed in-house by Dongfeng, according to Zhang.
Dongfeng also plans to advance the deployment of vehicles equipped with fast-charging solid-state batteries in 2027. The company will launch pilot production of its 350 Wh/kg fast-charging solid-state battery at that time.
Solid-state batteries are widely regarded by the industry as the next generation of power battery technology. Compared with the liquid lithium batteries that currently dominate the market, they are expected to offer higher energy density, longer range and better safety.
Dongfeng previously disclosed that the energy density of its 350 Wh/kg solid-state battery is about twice that of mainstream lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Mainstream LFP cells have an energy density of around 140 to 210 Wh/kg.
The battery can support a vehicle range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, which will help owners say goodbye to range anxiety, Dongfeng said previously.
In June 2025, the company's solid-state battery laboratory was completed and put into use, and a 0.2 GWh solid-state battery pilot production line was also completed and brought online.
Dongfeng is not the only Chinese automaker betting on solid-state batteries. The Hongqi brand, owned by China FAW Group, rolled out its first prototype vehicle equipped with a solid-state battery earlier this year.
Major battery manufacturers are also accelerating their moves. CATL (HKEX: 3750) and BYD (HKEX: 1211) are both currently targeting small-batch vehicle installations in 2027.
