Attendees had the privilege of hearing from two exceptional CFOs, George Angus of Ross Video and Patrick Houston of Calian Group, who shared practical insights on how Canadian companies can successfully expand internationally. Their perspectives were grounded in experience and refreshingly candid about both the opportunities and the challenges. One quote that really stood out was: “Talk to those who have done it. Connect with people who have tried it.” This simple idea carries weight. Growth into new markets is rarely a straight line. Learning from peers who have navigated similar paths can accelerate decision making, reduce risk, and build confidence. It also speaks directly to the value of community. Heather Salvatore, MBA liked thisJIM BALSILLIE So I am not going to write a big lead in on Jim’s Opening Keynote at the FEI Canada Conference a couple days ago—he is one of our country’s most successful business leaders and visionaries and its best I let his words carry the day via this Financial Post article. I do want to offer my thanks to Jim who set the tone and manner for the entire Conference by being open, insightful, straight forward (he is not shy to say how he feels which we loved!!) passionate, and highly engaging. And having never met Jim before what really struck me is how much this man loves our country. He is a passionate Canadian who just wants us to succeed, do better, reach further and strive higher. On a final note, a word of thanks to FEI Canada and Toronto Chapter Board Member Jordan Beallor. It takes a village to put on these Conferences, and we ask for a lot of help from our members and volunteers. But today I want to talk about someone who embodies all of that, my son Ian Hilgendorff Ian graduated from UBC today with a combined degree in Commerce and Computer Science. It's a rigorous program that sits exactly where technology and business are heading, and he earned every bit of it. But what I'm most proud of isn't just the degree. Ian treated university as an opportunity for academic growth, yes, but equally for personal growth. He pushed himself in the classroom and outside of it. He's an avid skier and adventurer, and I've always believed that the people who seek out challenge in their lives, be it on a mountain, in a course, or in an unfamiliar situation, are the same people who show up differently when it counts. Parenting teaches you humility. You pour everything you have into raising someone, and then one day you look up and realize they've already surpassed what you thought possible for them. Proud doesn't quite cover it. But it's a start. Congratulations, Ian.
