FEI Canada GTO Chapter (Kitchener Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph)
5dHeather Salvatore, MBA reposted thisGreat energy at the FEI National Conference in Ottawa this week. Attendees had the privilege of hearing from two exceptional CFOs, George Angus of Ross Video and Patrick Houston of Calian Group, who shared practical insights on how Canadian companies can successfully expand internationally. Their perspectives were grounded in experience and refreshingly candid about both the opportunities and the challenges. One quote that really stood out was: “Talk to those who have done it. Connect with people who have tried it.” This simple idea carries weight. Growth into new markets is rarely a straight line. Learning from peers who have navigated similar paths can accelerate decision making, reduce risk, and build confidence. It also speaks directly to the value of community. Within FEI GTO, we have a network of finance leaders who bring diverse experiences across industries, geographies, and stages of growth. Whether you are considering expansion, scaling operations, or navigating change, there is immense value in tapping into that collective knowledge. For those considering getting more involved, this is exactly what FEI GTO offers. Access to people who have done it, who are doing it, and who are willing to share. If you are not yet connected to the chapter, I would encourage you to join the conversation. -

Heather Salvatore, MBA shared thisThe rise of AI-generated resumes is creating a new challenge for hiring managers: the resume illusion. While these applications often hit every keyword, they can mask a lack of genuine experience or soft skills. Our latest blog explores how to rethink your evaluation process to find the real person behind the prompt, including: • Using behavioral interviews to find tangible results. • Implementing work simulations to test real-time thinking. • The renewed importance of probing reference checks. • Why in-person interviews are making a comeback. Heather Salvatore, MBA liked thisJIM BALSILLIE So I am not going to write a big lead in on Jim’s Opening Keynote at the FEI Canada Conference a couple days ago—he is one of our country’s most successful business leaders and visionaries and its best I let his words carry the day via this Financial Post article. I do want to offer my thanks to Jim who set the tone and manner for the entire Conference by being open, insightful, straight forward (he is not shy to say how he feels which we loved!!) passionate, and highly engaging. And having never met Jim before what really struck me is how much this man loves our country. He is a passionate Canadian who just wants us to succeed, do better, reach further and strive higher. On a final note, a word of thanks to FEI Canada and Toronto Chapter Board Member Jordan Beallor. It takes a village to put on these Conferences, and we ask for a lot of help from our members and volunteers. Jordan brought the idea of having Jim as Opening Keynote to the table, made the invite personally and worked with Jim's team leading into the presentation. Jordan, much appreciated. 2dHeather Salvatore, MBA liked thisA highlight from the opening keynote at the FEI Canada 2026 Conference: national business publication The Financial Post recently featured key insights from Jim Balsillie’s thought-provoking address on Canada’s economic future. Jim challenged attendees to rethink how Canada competes in an economy increasingly driven by AI, data, intellectual property, and digital infrastructure. His message was clear: Canada must modernize its economic strategy or risk falling behind in a rapidly changing global landscape. He also pointed to a potential $500-billion opportunity if Canada embraces the realities of the modern economy and strengthens its approach to innovation, competitiveness, and digital sovereignty. The keynote sparked important conversations throughout the conference and continues to generate discussion well beyond the event. 3dHeather Salvatore, MBA liked thisWhat a way to close out the 2026 FEI Canada Conference. 🇨🇦 Our powerhouse Closing Luncheon Keynote, “Vision for the Future: Building a Strong, Competitive Canadian Economy,” brought together some of the country’s most influential leaders to tackle the questions that matter most: How do we strengthen Canada’s competitiveness in a rapidly shifting global economy? How do we unlock productivity, innovation, investment, and long-term resilience? And what kind of leadership will shape Canada’s future success? An incredible discussion led by Bailey Church, FCPA, FCA, CIA of KPMG Canada featuring: • Michael Rousseau , President & CEO, Air Canada • Hon. Rod Phillips , Vice Chair, Canaccord Genuity Group Inc. • Vicki Saunders (She/Her) , Founder of Coralus (formerly SheEO) The conversation was bold, candid, strategic, and exactly the kind of dialogue senior finance and business leaders need right now. This is why FEI Canada continues to be one of the most important gatherings for finance and executive leadership in the country bringing together the minds shaping Canada’s economic future. If you weren’t in the room this year, make sure you are in 2027. The conversations happening here matter. The connections matter. The future being built here matters. #FEICanada #Leadership #CanadianEconomy #FinanceLeadership #EconomicGrowth #Innovation #CFO #BusinessLeadership #Strategy #Canada -

Thank you Hailey Hechtman for moderating and Carole Dagher, Michael Herman and Venassa Baptiste, CPA for sharing your stories. #FEICanada2026

Heather Salvatore, MBA liked thisHeather Salvatore, MBA liked thisAt OpenText, I talk a lot about leadership, accountability, and what it means to show up. But today I want to talk about someone who embodies all of that, my son Ian Hilgendorff Ian graduated from UBC today with a combined degree in Commerce and Computer Science. It's a rigorous program that sits exactly where technology and business are heading, and he earned every bit of it. But what I'm most proud of isn't just the degree. Ian treated university as an opportunity for academic growth, yes, but equally for personal growth. He pushed himself in the classroom and outside of it. He's an avid skier and adventurer, and I've always believed that the people who seek out challenge in their lives, be it on a mountain, in a course, or in an unfamiliar situation, are the same people who show up differently when it counts. Parenting teaches you humility. You pour everything you have into raising someone, and then one day you look up and realize they've already surpassed what you thought possible for them. Proud doesn't quite cover it. But it's a start. Congratulations, Ian.

🇨🇦 Canada’s “Litmus-Test” Budget: What to Watch As Ottawa prepares to roll out its next budget, a few key themes are starting to take shape: Housing: Expect new incentives for multi-unit builds, rental projects, and first-time homebuyers. Productivity: We could see more R&D tax credits and support for innovation and advanced manufacturing. Middle-class relief: Some targeted tax breaks seem likely, while broad tax hikes or wealth taxes appear off the table. For anyone in finance, real estate, or business, it’s worth keeping an eye on how these moves might shape client strategies and investment decisions. This isn’t just another budget. It’s a snapshot of where Canada’s priorities are headed. 🔗 Full article from Investment Executive: https://lnkd.in/gnkmsXuk #Budget2025 #TaxPolicy #FinancialPlanning #HousingMarket #Innovation #CanadaEconomy

A Strong Year Ahead for Senior Accountants & Finance Managers This year presents higher expectations and real opportunities for mid-level finance and accounting professionals. In Ottawa, organizations are demanding more from Senior Accountants and Finance Managers: - Leaner teams lead to broader responsibilities - Reporting timelines are tightening - Managers are expected to deliver both accuracy and insight Market signals indicate: - Senior Accountant and Finance Manager roles remain among the most consistently hired finance positions locally - CPA-designated (or in-progress) professionals are strongly preferred - Candidates with month-end leadership, review experience, and stakeholder communication skills are advancing quickly This year focuses on building influence rather than just increasing workload: - Sharpening judgment - Speaking confidently about results and risks - Creating visibility through reliability and follow-through Career momentum at this level is cultivated through trust, consistency, and capability. Wishing Ottawa’s finance and accounting professionals a focused, rewarding year ahead.
