Would you like a career boost with that? 🍟🎓 Australia’s Macca’s is doing what many governments only talk about. McDonald's’s is now giving employees micro-credentials that count for university credit - shaving one year off a degree and saving workers over $20,000. All by formally recognizing the learning that already happens at work. This isn’t a HR stunt. It’s a systems redesign - one Singapore has the ingredients for, but has yet to deploy at scale. Here’s the big lesson: The workplace is the most scalable classroom we already have - we just haven’t designed it as one. A few things Macca’s got right: ✅ External validation, not internal hype They secured real articulation agreements with universities. No “21st-century skills” slogans - just portable credit. ✅ A closed loop between education & employment Universities finally recognize structured work-based learning. Employers finally give their training external value. This is the missing middle everywhere. ✅ Upward mobility without new subsidies A year saved. $20k saved. For frontline workers, that’s life-changing. ✅ A competitive new benchmark When a major employer sets this standard, everyone else will have to respond. Singapore should ask itself a simple question: With our national skills frameworks, world-class poly-ITE system, and strong employer networks … why aren’t we the global leader in employer-accredited pathways? Microcredentials - a curse or a blessing for skills systems? This new ILO-UNICEF-DJY-GenU joint publication contributes to the debate on microcredentials, with a focus on youth, as a flexible way of acquiring skills and validating competencies to enhance signalling mechanisms among jobseekers and workers. Based on four illustrative cases the report highlights the usage of microcredentials by governments, companies, international organizations and non-profit actors. The report discusses benefits, challenges and potential impact on the labour market and offers policy recommendations aimed at improving the design, implementation and governance of microcredentials to better support youth transitions into decent work. It is a collective effort by the ILO and UNICEF, supported by the multi-stakeholder initiatives Decent Jobs for Youth and Generation Unlimited and benefited greatly from the experience and contributions of various governments, businesses, international organizations, and civil society organizations.

Realising the full potential of micro-credentials: A collaborative look at the new Commonwealth MC Framework. For years, I've championed #RecognitionofPrior Learning (RPL) as a powerful tool for social justice. RPL offers equitable access to education and decent jobs for those with valuable skills gained outside formal classrooms. It’s also a key to labour market efficiency, giving employers a clear line of sight to the skilled workforce they desperately need. The rise of micro-credentials promised to supercharge this movement. The new Commonwealth Micro-credential Framework for Lifelong Learning has arrived, aiming to create a unified system across 56 countries. It’s an ambitious and necessary step, but as I read through it, I see a framework pulled in two directions—one towards a flexible, competency-based future, and the other back towards the traditions of academia. Following my recent participation in the Commonwealth of Learning Workshop on Micro-Credentials Framework in Gaborone, a number of colleagues have been asking me what this is about and why Micro-Credentials? In simple terms, micro-credentials are short, focused, skills-based learning opportunities designed to certify specific #competencies. They are flexible, accessible, and industry-relevant, making them a powerful tool for upskilling, reskilling, and lifelong learning. Key elements of a micro-credential course include: 🔹 Clear and measurable learning outcomes 🔹 Short, modular design that is competency-based 🔹 Assessment that produces verifiable evidence of learning 🔹 Digital badges or certificates with embedded metadata 🔹 Stackability to larger qualifications (e.g. diplomas or degrees) 🔹 Industry and employer relevance for real-world impact 🔹 Quality assurance to maintain credibility and recognition At their core, micro-credentials are about equipping learners with #practical, demonstrable skills that are portable across jobs, sectors, and even countries. They bridge the gap between formal education and the fast-changing world of work.
