    Last week I was speaking with a friend who’s implementing AI solutions to train sales teams. He mentioned a potential fallback of these systems: the #cultural delta. A Japanese evaluation feels completely different from an American one, and that gap can affect how models interpret feedback and shape learning outcomes. A few days later, I came across a Harvard University study that mapped ChatGPT’s value system across 65 countries using the World Values Survey. The result pointed in the same direction: GPT aligns closely with the U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany, and Western Europe, far from countries such as Ethiopia or Kyrgyzstan. In essence, #ChatGPT thinks like the West. Psychologists describe this mindset as WEIRD: Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic. Most of its training text and feedback come from WEIRD populations, so its worldview feels: ➡️ individualistic ➡️ analytical ➡️ secular ➡️ rooted in Western communication and moral frameworks The authors summed it up well: “WEIRD in, WEIRD out.” It’s a useful reminder that AI carries the culture that forms it.     UNESCO for the People – Driving Ethical and Inclusive AI for Humanity Artificial Intelligence is transforming our world. It shapes how we learn, work, and govern – yet billions of people remain excluded from its benefits. At the same time, the risks are mounting: biased systems, opaque algorithms, growing inequalities, and job displacement. This is not only a technological challenge; it is a human rights challenge.   UNESCO has taken the lead by adopting the first global Recommendation on the Ethics of AI – a landmark framework establishing universal principles for fairness, transparency, and accountability. But adoption is only the beginning. The real challenge is inclusive, equitable implementation: turning principles into action so AI serves humanity, not the other way around. At the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in June, scientists, policymakers, and innovators delivered a clear message: ethical AI cannot exist without strong investment in education, infrastructure, and global cooperation.   Throughout my campaign, one lesson stood out: AI must serve people – but first, we must imagine the societies we want, before technology decides for us. “UNESCO for the People” envisions a future where AI promotes peace, equity, and sustainability. Acting with courage, knowledge, and cooperation, we can make AI humanity’s greatest ally by: •Supporting Member States in implementing the 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, the UNGA resolution adopted in March 2024 on “Seizing the opportunities of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems for sustainable development,” and the Pact for the Future. This includes embedding human rights into AI governance so that every system upholds human dignity, freedom of expression, non-discrimination, social justice, international law, and respect for cultural diversity. •Reducing disparities by supporting developing countries through knowledge-sharing, capacity-building programs, innovative financing mechanisms, and the development of infrastructure, multilingual AI systems, and open educational resources – ensuring no community is left behind. • Fostering international solidarity through inclusive dialogue and joint research initiatives that unite governments, academia, industry, and civil society, while promoting human-centered and sustainable AI, rooted in open science. • Making AI a driver of inclusion by leveraging its potential in education, teacher training, youth engagement, local innovation ecosystems, and cultural heritage management. • Anticipating future challenges through a Global Foresight Mechanism to monitor technological trends and prepare societies for their implications, while developing ethical frameworks for frontier technologies such as neurotechnology, quantum sciences, and synthetic biology – ensuring a balance between risks and opportunities before risks outpace regulation.

    I'm incredibly proud to have co-written a new policy brief, "Inclusive and Secure Artificial Intelligence," with the brilliant Liliana Pinto. 📝 This was a true labor of love, and I'm grateful to the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) for the invitation to work on this improtant project. Our report dives into a topic that's often overlooked in the AI discourse: cultural dynamics. 🎨 While the conversation around AI ethics has focused on things like technical fairness and privacy, we argue that AI systems are not neutral. In fact, they often reflect and reinforce dominant cultural norms, frequently those of the Global North, marginalizing communities in the Global South whose languages and experiences are underrepresented in training data. 🗣️ We explored how this bias shows up in the real world: Facial Recognition: Many systems have higher error rates for individuals with darker skin tones, a direct result of training data that lacks diversity. 🧑🏿🦱 Natural Language Processing (NLP): Tools like Google Translate and ChatGPT struggle with non-Western languages and Indigenous dialects, perpetuating linguistic dominance. 🗣️ Hiring Algorithms: Automated systems can disadvantage women and people of color by penalizing resumes that reference women's colleges or by relying on biased historical data. 👩🏾💼 But this isn't just a critique; it's a call to action. We offer a practical policy toolkit to embed cultural awareness into the entire AI lifecycle. This includes: 🔨 Cultural Impact Assessments: Similar to environmental impact reports, these assessments would proactively identify and mitigate potential harms to a community's norms, values, traditions, and languages before an AI system is deployed. ✅ 🔨 Participatory Governance: We advocate for involving affected communities directly in the design and oversight of AI systems to ensure they reflect diverse perspectives from the outset. 💬 🔨 Strengthened Partnerships: We recommend building strong collaborations between the public sector, private companies, and civil society to create shared standards and enforceable regulations. 🔗 This report is about a fundamental shift: from reactive bias mitigation to active harm prevention.     ✨ AI at a crossroads: Can we steer it responsibly? The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) 2025 Presidential Panel on the Future of AI Research lays out a stark reality—AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace, but governance, safety, and evaluation mechanisms are struggling to keep up. 🌏 Having worked at the intersection of AI governance, responsible deployment, and multi-agent AI, I see a recurring challenge: we are building AI that is more powerful than our ability to govern it responsibly. 🔬 Key takeaways from the report & my perspective:- ✅ AI Reasoning & Trustworthiness:- While LLMs and Agentic AI are demonstrating emergent reasoning, we lack verifiable correctness. Can we afford AI-driven decision-making without reliability guarantees? ✅ Agentic AI & Multi-Agent Systems:- The integration of LLMs into autonomous, multi-agent AI systems is a double-edged sword. On one hand, these systems offer adaptive, cooperative intelligence—but on the other, they introduce complexity, opacity, and safety risks. We need governance models that balance autonomy and oversight. ✅ Responsible AI Development & Deployment:- Many organizations still focus on post-deployment fixes rather than AI safety by design. Alignment techniques today (RAG, constitutional AI, human feedback) remain fragile. We must shift toward "failsafe AI"—AI that degrades gracefully rather than unpredictably. ✅ AI Ethics & Governance:- AI risks—whether misinformation, deepfakes, or algorithmic bias—are no longer just theoretical. Geopolitical competition for AI dominance could further sideline ethical considerations. It is time for a convergence of policy, technical safety, and corporate governance models to ensure AI serves societal progress, not just market incentives. 👩💻 The Path Forward: A Call for Multidisciplinary Collaboration:- AI governance cannot be an afterthought. It must be woven into the DNA of AI systems—across research, regulation, and deployment. As someone deeply involved in AI governance and policy, I believe the future lies in co-regulation—where industry, academia, and policymakers collaborate proactively rather than reactively. ✨ How do we get there? 1️⃣ Bridging the gap between AI development and policy-making. 2️⃣ Building safety-aligned benchmarks for Agentic AI. 3️⃣ Embedding ethical constraints within AI architectures, not just in guidelines. 💡 AI is no longer just a tool—it is a co-pilot in decision-making, shaping economies, politics, and societies.
