Another one of our 2026 targets in the planning for Women in Network Plus. Our nominated charity partner Trafford Domestic Abuse Services (TDAS) are a charity we are supporting in any way that we can this year. On 2 June we plan to hold a Women in Network Plus National Fundraising Day across our offices and depots to raise as much money as we can for TDAS. This year we have set ourselves a fundraising amount and we are determined to smash it.

As part of our commitments and targets for 2026 Women in Network Plus and the 25 Directors at Network Plus have pledged that each one of them will mentor a woman working at Network Plus this year. This is part of our 2026 plan to help women go for that promotion and advance their career at Network Plus.

Yesterday I attended my first WUN - Womens Utilities Network face to face event at Calisen in Manchester since Network Plus & Women in Network Plus signed up to be a partner with the Network. The subject was Progressing Menopause in the workplace, a subject we are passionate about at Network Plus and has been on the agenda of every WIN+ Event since we began 4 years ago. In this time we have progressed our strategy with a support group, champions and manager training. With the change in legislation we are getting ready to publish our action plan in 2027 and thanks to the update and conversations shared yesterday from WUN - Womens Utilities Network & Henpicked we are feeling confident. Along with this I made some excellent connections yesterday with some truly wonderful women.

✨ It’s amazing what can happen when you bring together a room full of passionate people to discuss an important topic that still doesn’t get anywhere near enough airtime. ✨ Legislation is changing and, by 2027, every organisation employing more than 250 people will be required to publish a Menopause Action Plan. Yesterday, I was fortunate to support a brilliant WUN - Womens Utilities Network partner roundtable, hosted by the wonderful team at Calisen. The session brought together women from across WUN partner organisations to explore why Menopause Action Plans matter; and, crucially, how they can be meaningfully implemented in the workplace. Some of the statistics shared by Henpicked were sobering and really underline how much more there is to do to properly support women through an inevitable stage of life: - 47% of women who take time off due to menopause symptoms are not honest about the reason - 1 in 10 women have left their job as a direct result of the menopause - 41% worry that their capability at work will be questioned What really stood out is that many of the solutions are not complex - but they do require intent and commitment: - Education – understanding symptoms enables better, more compassionate support - Culture – creating psychologically safe environments where women feel able to talk openly - Working environments – from temperature control and breathable PPE to basic facilities that are still lacking for many field-based colleagues - Policies and processes – and, just as importantly, ensuring they are genuinely implemented Some of the personal stories shared yesterday were incredibly open and vulnerable. The fact that these conversations were welcomed, and that organisations chose to show up and listen, gives me real optimism for those of us navigating these challenges now and in the future. And, on a lighter note, it was so good to finally meet in person many of the incredible women I’ve previously only seen on screen; a timely reminder of just how much I value being back at in‑person events 🤍

A really insightful session, loads of experiences shared and ideas taken away which will help to strengthen and improve our existing Menopause strategy at Network Plus.

What makes Network Plus different? This is always an easy answer for me, 100% our people. International Women’s Day and our associated activity makes me reflect on what it means to me and Network Plus. For us it started 3 years ago with a conversation with Tracy Derbyshire MCIPD and Louise Lawton frustrated at being a business that accepted the industry wide gender inequality in Utilities. So we decided we either sit and moan or we do something. We didn’t have big plans we just wanted to make tomorrow better than yesterday. So we set up a group, we didn’t ask permission because we knew it was the right thing to do. It was our group and we did what we wanted, we improved small things that weren’t new or innovative. We picked things that were barriers to some women feeling welcome or included. We enhanced maternity pay, we talked about periods, menopause, imposter syndrome, role models, mentoring etc. Once we started to understand what we were achieving we invited men into the sessions, we shared experiences and barriers and through education we made allies of them. 3 years later we still have a long way to go, but it genuinely astonishes me how much has been achieved here as a group and the individual stories where we have significantly impacted people’s lives through career change, promotion, inclusion or shared support on life changing health conditions. Real changes with real impact. Yesterday I supported 2 further sessions celebrating how far we have come and looking at our targets for this year. As we evolve we are now looking less at what we can do, to now looking at alliances that we can make and challenge others to come on the journey. We have agreed with our Managing Directors around the number of women we bring into operations, the number of women promoted within our business and that each director will mentor at least 1 woman. We are also delighted to partner with WUN - Womens Utilities Network to access resources and shared challenges The destination is still a long way away but the journey is going well, really well. We have over 300 active members we ran 6 sessions across 5 locations yesterday, we have a steering group Katie Baines, Imogen Jones, Zoe Stevens, Amy Cowdry, we have people stepping up to lead and add their energy Eve McGovern, Abi Robinson, Ruby King, Molly Richards, Louisa Audsley. We have active male allies presenting Kevin Fowlie, Daryll Smith, Dave Trotter, Mike Cafferky, Dan Burgess Burges. Most of all we still have the forces of nature, Tracy and Louise with the drive, resilience and fun to ensure we are always getting better. We’ve come a long way in 3 years and I think I’m finally comfortable that we never ask permission! #kevssecretcostcode!
