Data Literacy Essentials

Data literacy is crucial for organisations and individuals who wish to unlock the power of their data.

To support this, we have developed a new online self-study course, Data Literacy Essentials which is for beginners who want to get started with their data journey.

There are four modules, and you can expect to spend around 6 to 8 hours studying in total as you complete the course.

  • Understanding data and where it comes from
  • Looking after and communicating with data
  • Understanding the potential of data
  • Data and misconceptions

A103: Introducing Data Literacy

A103: Introducing Data Literacy is a CPD accredited online course that will guide you on how to make the most of your data – from collection and management through to visualisation.

The course is open to anyone who wants to understand the basics of using, managing and interpreting data. As the course uses examples from education and assessment, it would be particularly useful to those working in the field of educational assessment, but the learning can be applied to all contexts.

Over nine weeks, you’ll:

  • Understand what ‘data’ means, what it can be used for, and how it is effectively collected.
  • Learn the practicalities of working with data, its storage and management.
  • Gain the knowledge and tools to tell stories with data, using visualisations, summaries and descriptive statistics.
  • Be able to understand, interpret and evaluate data using knowledge of its limitations and appropriateness.
  • Reflect on how data literacy applies to you and your role.
  • Have anytime access to our virtual learning environment to learn flexibly in your own time.
  • Connect and learn with other practitioners as you discuss key issues in data literacy and work through course action points.

Bookings close: Friday 23 June at 12pm (UK time)

A Postgraduate qualification from Cambridge

“One of the big motivational factors that lead me to applying for a postgraduate course in assessment theory was the question around how to design assessments that actually measure what we're trying to measure.”
“I would recommend this course for the pure fact that you are going to meet amazing thinkers along the way, who will really engage and challenge your own biases.”

Learn more about the value of studying assessment at a postgraduate level from Christopher Quach who is a Secondary School Head Teacher based in Hertfordshire.

The deadline for applications for 2023 entry is 10 July 2023.
