Leadership: How To Accelerate Performance

Should a diligent farmer reap a harvest?

Why?

If you plant good seeds shouldn’t you expect to reap a harvest too? 

I’m not referring to the seeds you plant in the earth. I’m referring to:

  • Positive thoughts
  • Positive words of affirmation
  • Rewards and recognition

You may not recognize those as seeds, but they are seeds for your mind (M.I.N.D - Memory Implanted Naturally Developed.) Extremely powerful seeds that give you the results you manifest everyday. There is one concept that thought Leaders of the past and present have consistently agreed upon:

Thoughts become things.

What you think about, you bring about.

Therefore, it will benefit us to watch our thoughts.

  • What do you think of yourself?
  • What do you think of your employees?
  • What do your inner thoughts sound like when things don’t go your way?
  • How do you speak to your employees?

I remember one of my employees telling me that I was the first Manager who recognized her for going above and beyond at work. How is that possible when she worked at multiple companies before working for me? We have to do a better job as Managers. Recognition is a part of your responsibility as a Leader.

It’s natural to want recognition. Think of a child who does something good. When my son says his ABC's and counts to twenty he says “Yeah Dada” and gives me a high five. It feels good and it's a part of our human nature to recognize good things. I wonder if we’re losing that child like gift, which accelerates performance. I wonder if it’s too simple for us to grasp.  

The Performance Accelerator is (Simple Intelligence) the words you think and speak everyday. You have the power to increase your leadership capacity by the choices you make throughout the day. Have you been thinking positive thoughts and taking positive action towards your goals? 

  • Do you believe you can achieve your goals? Why or Why not?
  • Do you believe your employees can achieve their goals? Why or Why not?

Here’s what you can do to accelerate performance:

  • Be clear with your expectations
  • Think positive thoughts
  • Recognize and reward your employees (Don’t be stingy with praise)
  • Use positive affirmations
  • Take strategic action now

Here’s what you know.

  • Your motivation
  • How you like to be treated and managed

Here’s what you should know to accelerate performance.

  • What motives your team?
  • How does each individual like to be treated and managed?

All of this may seem pretty simple but many Leaders fail at getting their desired results, because they feel like they shouldn’t have to tell someone they’re doing a great job.

There’s no secret, common sense is not always common. 

Here’s how you can lead people if you’re not their Manager.

It’s Nice To Be Nice

Have you ever noticed someone doing a great job and thought, WOW, that person is doing a great job, but you didn’t say anything to the individual? That was a missed opportunity to accelerate their performance. All to often, Leaders see someone doing a great job and ignore it because they think:

  • That’s their job.
  • That’s what he or she gets paid to do.
  • If I say she’s doing a great job she will expect me to say it all the time. (So what… What’s the big deal about recognizing or rewarding the behaviors or performance you want to increase in your company?)

Let’s do a little reflection.

  • Don’t you like to know when you’re doing a great job?
  • Don’t you want to feel significant?
  • Don’t you feel good when someone sees you going above and beyond your duty, especially if it’s your Manager?

Leadership Challenge

Pay attention to your team’s performance and recognize them for doing their job, especially if someone is going above and beyond their duty. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to accelerate their performance today.

Guard your thoughts and the words you speak. Plant positive seeds and you will reap a great harvest. Why not? If you don’t guard your gates who will?
