Microsoft is paywalling Copilot in Office apps from next week. For a while, users have been able to leverage Copilot Chat functionality at no extra cost inside their Office apps. Not the full licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot experience however. From mid-April, they will start taking this functionality away from non-licensed users. You will still be able to use Copilot Chat for free, as a more secure alternative to ChatGPT, but it will be less convenient to access. Copilot. Claude. ChatGPT. Vibe Coding. Lots of noise. If you are struggling to keep up and understand where real value lies, I'm running a monthly webinar for business leaders starting next week. Comment 'Noise' if you are interested and I will send you the free registration link. 👇 No hidden sales agenda. No using your data for marketing. 🙂

Today is the last day for free Copilot Chat for organizations with over 2,000 users. (MC1253858): “Starting April 15, 2026, Copilot will no longer be available in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for Copilot Chat users. To ensure a high-quality experience, we are reserving the full Copilot experience in these apps—with advanced reasoning and model choice—for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.” What still works after April 15, 2026 (for unlicensed/Copilot Chat users in large tenants): * Standalone Microsoft 365 Copilot app / copilot.microsoft.com * Copilot in Outlook * Web-based agents for content creation * Basic web-grounded chat (no access to your organization's private data)

‼️Changes in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote Copilot Chat in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with get advanced reasoning in April. This update applies to tenants with less than 2000 users. If you have more that 2000 user Copilot Chat in those apps won't be available at all❗ Those changes applies only to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. No changes for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license (paid one). That's a big change - it will affect large tenants and those that are close to 2k users. Those customers will have to buy the full license to keep Copilot in Word/Excel/PowerPoint/OneNote. It will be at least confusing for customers... Details: 🔹Lest than 2k: Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will get advanced reasoning. ⚠️More than 2k: Copilot will no longer be available in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. It will remain available in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app and Outlook. 🔹Users will see the “Copilot Chat (Basic)” label in-product to help them identify their experience. 📅These changes will go into effect starting April 15, 2026. #Microsoft365Copilot

I came across a really important post from Tom that I initially missed, but it highlights a change that could have a significant impact on organisations like ours. The removal of Copilot’s Office integration from the free offering is, in my view, a surprising shift. Many of us have invested time helping colleagues and stakeholders understand what Copilot is and encouraging them to explore its capabilities through the free experience. Changes like this inevitably mean revisiting those conversations and reassessing how we position Copilot internally. I had expected to see continued expansion in the free tier to support broader adoption, so this feels like a step in a different direction. It will be interesting to see how this evolves and what it means for long-term adoption across organisations. We’ll certainly be discussing this with our Microsoft account teams to better understand the rationale and future roadmap. Keen to hear how others are approaching this.

Removing Copilot chat from within the core Microsoft 365 apps is a disappointing shift for many organizations, including education. It’s especially frustrating given earlier promises to expand capabilities for non-Copilot subscribers, only to see features now pulled back. -->Changes like this risk pushing users toward alternative tools that may not meet the same security and compliance standards, particularly when access to embedded AI workflows is restricted.
