A reflection on the impact of AI in education Lately, I’ve been having conversations, both at work and in college, about the role AI is playing in education. Opinions are clearly divided. Some argue that students’ reliance on AI is weakening their ability to think critically and analyze problems independently. On the other hand, I’ve heard compelling perspectives on how AI can be a powerful ally: helping generate new ideas, identify gaps in our reasoning, challenge assumptions, and ultimately strengthen our ability to argue and defend our viewpoints. I think educational institutions need to adapt to the AI era rather than resist it. The focus shouldn’t be on banning or avoiding AI, but on rethinking teaching methods so that these tools elevate learning instead of becoming shortcuts. Used intentionally, AI can push students to a higher level of thinking, not replace it. Is it time to stop fighting AI in the classroom? I’ve been following the debate around restricting AI in schools, and this video from IBM Technology perfectly captures why we need to change our approach. The "train has already left the station" [05:00]—we can either get on board or get run over. The video highlights how AI can act as a personalized tutor [07:33], an editor [08:14], and even a research assistant [10:02]. Instead of drilling students on memorization or complex arithmetic (tasks they'll use calculators or databases for anyway), we should be teaching them AI literacy and ethics [12:13]. AI & Education: Generative AI & the Future of Critical Thinking https://lnkd.in/gJk2qtSB  by Jeff Crume, PhD, CISSP I especially liked this opening statement: I'm an adjunct professor, and the first time I saw it—what a chatbot leveraging generative AI could do—I knew immediately there was no point in assigning essays to my students to write, because I'd only be grading chatbot output. And I don't need the practice. My comment: Great video! I think there is a crucial nuance to the concept of "Just-in-Time Education" mentioned here. While AI makes information instantly accessible, you still need a strong foundation in a topic to actually perform the "Critical Thinking" required to use it safely. You can’t critically evaluate the AI's output if you are a blank slate; you need to know enough about the domain to spot hallucinations or logic errors. That makes lifelong learning even more important—not just to learn new tools, but to maintain the knowledge base required to fact-check them. To modernize Alexander Pope for the AI era: "A little prompting is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the synthetic spring: There shallow drafts intoxicate the brain, And fundamental knowledge sobers us again."
