We're delighted to once again be supporting the Under Pressure ’26 event from Autogem Invicta Ltd, with it's unique balance of both technical challenges and customer service skills, highlighting the importance of tyre condition and raising awareness of the need for regular tyre maintenance.
Tyres are one of the highest reasons for roadside breakdowns in the UK, with thousands of pothole-related incidents each year, commonly involving damaged tyres, wheels, and suspension. While our roadside patrols can fix many issues at the scene, some vehicles require recovery, adding further inconvenience for drivers.
The AA is urging continued focus on road maintenance while reminding drivers that vigilance remains key – particularly on unfamiliar roads and during periods of wet or wintry weather when potholes covered with standing water can be more difficult to see.
How to avoid punctures?
Here's a few simple checks can help to prevent a breakdown from happening:
1. Check your tyre tread depth and pressure regularly - including your spare wheel
2. Check your tyre age and condition. Older, perished tyres are more prone to blow-outs
3. Avoid driving over potholes or through puddles that could hide a pothole or damaged road surface
4. If you spot uneven tyre wear, your wheels might be misaligned. Get a tyre centre or garage to check
5. If you drive with heavy loads, adjust your tyre pressure to cope (you'll find this information in your handbook)
The AA is also a founding partner of the Pothole Partnership comprising of JCB, THE BRITISH CYCLING FEDERATION, and the National Motorcyclists Council which is calling for a transformative shift in road maintenance standards with a new proposal requiring highway contractors to provide a five-year warranty on every non-emergency pothole repairs.*
