    We’re excited to announce a new partnership between AA Driving School and The Honest Truth. From today, AA driving instructors on an All-Inclusive or Trainee franchise can access The Honest Truth - a national road safety programme designed to help create safer drivers from day one. Using real-world insight into how risky decisions behind the wheel can lead to serious consequences, the programme gives instructors a simple and practical way to bring these conversations into lessons. It supports the great work instructors already do every day, helping learners not just pass their test, but build the habits and mindset to stay safe on the road afterwards too. Everything fits around existing lessons, helping learners develop safer behaviours while staying focused on getting test-ready.     Nick Edwards is Group CTO at the AA. Harj Johal is MD of Customer Operations. Together they run the technology and the frontline of a 120-year-old roadside rescue business that handles around 11,000 breakdowns a day across the UK. I recently had them both on the Data & AI Mastery Podcast. Here are 4 lessons from our conversation: ————————————— 1. The early adopters came from across the business, not just the technology function. When Nick and his team rolled out 1500 ChatGPT enterprise licenses across the group, they made it easy for every function to experiment from day one. The biggest surge came from finance, HR, and the operational teams, exactly the breadth Nick was hoping for. Within the first couple of months, colleagues had built around 300 custom GPTs on their own. ————————————— 2. Pair top-down structure with bottom-up funding The AA gives both sides room to operate. On the top-down side, a technology review board appraises new tools, costs, and how they get deployed across the group. On the bottom-up side, the week we recorded the AA launched a Dragon's Den style process. Any team in the business can pitch an AI idea, and there is a pot of money set aside to back the ones that get green-lit. Structure for the things you have to control. Funding for the ideas you cannot predict. ————————————— 3. AI changes what one contact centre person can own end to end Harj's clearest vision for the next few years was about the role itself. "Historically, that may be 5 or 6 different individuals in the business owning their part of that going forward. The technology should be able to say that's one person's responsibility to own that end to end." One person handles the call, sees the connected car data, books a hotel if the family cannot get home, and dispatches a recovery truck instead of a patrol van once they realise the vehicle is not fixable on the roadside. What used to take five handoffs becomes one conversation. ————————————— 4. Digital convenience with human care Harj keeps coming back to this phrase. "There's a huge demographic of the UK that don't want to speak to people and want to do things digitally." And another demographic who'd rather speak to a human. The AA is building for both at once, not picking a side. Digital where customers want it, human voice where they need it. ————————————— A reminder that at a 120-year-old operational business, the technology adoption is rarely the hard part. The hard part is keeping every decision tied to what happens at the roadside. What stood out across the conversation was the energy inside the business. The AA is a 120-year-old company that still feels like it is building something new, growing fast, investing in its people, and treating every roadside moment as the brand.     Today, it was a pleasure to spend time with Jack Carter from our mobile mechanics team, seeing first-hand how we’re delivering a brilliant experience to our customers at their home.      What stood out wasn’t just the convenience - it was the quality of service and the trust in our brand. You could really see the confidence our customer had in us when our yellow van arrived at their doorstep. Our proposition is simple: expert AA mechanics coming directly to your home or workplace to carry out servicing, diagnostics and repairs. It’s convenient, trusted, and built on the strength of our heritage. This is a significant opportunity.
