I completely agree with Maltego Technologies new paper's stance that the future of OSINT isn't about machines replacing people, but rather about a hybrid human machine synergy. It hits on a point I advocate for constantly: technology should handle the scale and speed of data collection, but human judgment must remain the final authority for interpretation and accountability. The idea that we can simply automate "intelligence" without a human in the loop is a dangerous misconception that this paper challenges. It's great to see industry folks acknowledging the need to human judgement and not saying that a tool is a 100% solution.   The paper raises a great point about "faux data" and the growing difficulty of spotting AI generated content. This is exactly why I agree that we have to weave Structured Analytic Techniques directly into our digital workflows. If we aren't routinely using methods like Devil’s Advocacy or the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses to validate what the automation is showing us, we’re just building investigations on a foundation of potential hallucinations or algorithmic bias.   One question this paper leaves me with, though, is how we manage the "Collection-Dissemination Shift" it mentions. If the intelligence cycle is moving toward real time dissemination, does that actually leave enough room for the rigorous human validation we both believe is so important? There’s risk that the pressure for speed might tempt organizations to skip the "human in the loop" phase entirely just to keep up with the data flow.
