Attached vs. Detached Sellers Prospect: “I need more time to think about it.” Attached: “Do you need more time or more information? Because I’ve got 60 seconds and all the info you need to decide.” Detached: “Sounds like you’re weighing a few things and want to be sure it’s the right fit.” Prospect: “I think it’s a little too expensive. Attached: “The price is what you pay. The cost is what you pay for not solving the problem.” Detached: “Seems like it’s higher than what you’re using now or what else you’ve seen.” Prospect: “I tried something like this in the past and it didn’t work.” Attached: “Are you married? So you dated before, right? Same idea.” Detached: “Didn’t work?“ Detached sellers don’t try to push people forward. They sit with them where they are. They don’t defend. They explore. Because when you stop trying to convince, and start trying to understand, people tell you the truth. No truth, no trust. No trust, no transaction.
Detached is easy to say, harder to practice — especially when ego or end-of-quarter pressure creeps in. I’ve had success coaching reps to pause and literally name what they don’t know yet, mid-call. Creates space. Curious if you’ve found other ways to help reps stay grounded in the messier middle.
buyers can feel an attached seller. which causes them to get into this zone of resistance where they withhold what they're really thinking... they know they're getting objection handled. Buyers hate sellers who only care about the deal, not them.
Detached doesn’t mean disinterested, it means focused on understanding, not convincing. The best reps stay curious, not combative. That’s where real trust (and deals) are built. 👍🏼
This is what I've always done in any call. I guess it's the decades of mentoring students before I started coaching. They often just need to have space held for them. And once you do that, pressure gets released.
This post brilliantly nails the essence of effective selling, Josh. The concept of attached vs. detached sellers is especially pertinent in today's market, where consumers are more informed and wary of pressure tactics. Detached selling seems to focus not just on achieving a sale, but on understanding the customer's unique needs and perspectives. This approach can not only increase trust but also enhance customer loyalty. Exploring how these methods can be integrated into digital sales techniques could offer even more insight into modern selling dynamics.
