#Collaboration between brands and retailers is paramount for the success of reuse & refill initiatives at scale. Embracing standardization and asset sharing is essential for the industry's evolution towards sustainability. The massive systemic change required to reduce #PlasticPollution will never happen without collaboration. For example, Asda, a prominent UK grocery store chain, recently announced the closure of its refill trials in four stores. They attempted to integrate and scale an independent model into larger retail formats. This proved challenging, citing increased costs, complexity, and space requirements as key obstacles. These operational and commercial issues, along with consumer barriers, led to Asda's decision to exit the refill trials. While in-store refill shopping has succeeded in independent zero-waste stores, the approach needs adaptation for larger retailers to thrive. On the other side, The Refill Coalition in the UK has pioneered a successful model, currently being trialed by Aldi, showcasing substantial operational cost reductions exceeding 80%. By shifting the responsibility of cleaning and refilling to logistics experts and suppliers, the solution demonstrates promising results. Bad news for #sustainability: Asda is scraping its #refill store trial, whose pilot was running in #leeds since 2020. This follows Tesco wounding up its trial with reusable packaging company Loop in 2022. The economics of the concept were found to be “too challenging”,  and despite attempts to increase marketing of the proposition, “uptake remained low”. They quote: 💸 Cost Challenges: Despite efforts to keep refillable products cheaper than packaged alternatives, the economic model proved unsustainable. The cost barrier hindered customer engagement and the ability to scale the initiative. 🛒 Convenience and Cleanliness Concerns: Customers faced difficulties with the convenience of using refill stations and had concerns about the cleanliness of the process, which affected their willingness to participate. 📉 Perceived Product Quality: despite being brand names (PG Tips, Vimto, Kellogg’s, Radox and Persil) the refillable products were perceived as being of lower quality compared to packaged ones. ⚙️ Operational and Commercial Viability: Asda encountered significant operational issues and commercial challenges, making it difficult to deploy the refillable model across more stores. 🌟🌱Aldi UK and Ocado Retail are still trialling refill in-store and consumer returnables online, as part of the #RefillCoalition , run by GoUnpackaged Now, this asks serious questions about what can be done to go beyond single-use packaging. Aldi has been trialling the sale of crownless pineapples in its latest move to reduce food waste. With shoppers often throwing away the pineapple's crown, the supermarket will remove the green leaves from its pineapples during the production process for recycling instead. 🌿 Aldi's Latest Steps Toward Sustainable Packaging! 🌿 Aldi is taking significant strides in its sustainability journey by trialling the removal of pulp trays and plastic punnets from several fruit and vegetable lines. By eliminating these materials from products like Nature's Pick Cherry Tomatoes, Sliced Mushrooms, Baby Plum Tomatoes, and more, Aldi aims to reduce over 370 tonnes of plastic and packaging annually if implemented across all stores. What's interesting is how few of you understand the needs of the beverage supply chain, the role of different materials, and the life cycle impacts of each. The world hasn't gone plastic mad. It's gone bottled water and soft drink mad. Economic and environmental efficiency go hand in hand.
