Coles Group & Woolworths Supermarkets, we’re looking at you. "Australians are buying food from the supermarket and don't have a clue whether it's caused #deforestation along the supply chain. This just isn't good enough.” Every Australian should be able to walk into a supermarket and not worry about whether the food they buy is linked to the bulldozing of koalas’ homes. Take a listen to ACF’s Audrey van Herwaarden and Nathaniel Pelle giving expert testimony to a Senate inquiry into #greenwashing. Aldi has been trialling the sale of crownless pineapples in its latest move to reduce food waste. With shoppers often throwing away the pineapple's crown, the supermarket will remove the green leaves from its pineapples during the production process for recycling instead. This shift in consumer behaviour has been a crucial part of the solution to food waste. 🇦🇺 🦘 Interesting take by Audrey van Herwaarden on #greenwashing claims on the other side of the world in my home of Australia 🇦🇺 🦘 The country's two major supermarket players, Woolworths Supermarkets & Coles Group, are either: (at worst) deliberately obfuscating their sustainability claims for their own benefit or (at best) culpable for their wilfully ignorant marketing efforts. 🔖 🛰️ The technology to certify for deforestation-free supply chains exists (in fact at OpenAtlas we're making sure its available at the lowest costs possible) however businesses have proven themselves unwilling to adopt it without #mandatory regulatory requirements compelling them to do so. ❓Is an Australian Deforestation Regulation (copyrighting this as #AUSDR now FYI) on the cards in the near future? ♠️♥️ #auspol #deforestation #woolworths #coles #sustainability

Are consumers finally waking up to the power of organic? This report in The Grocer last week outlined the ‘Clarkson Farm’ effect that Ocado is seeing on sales of British pork and lion’s mane mushrooms. They have also attributed the TV programme with driving a 77% increase in searches for ‘British produce’. If Ocado’s sales are anything to go by then it’s clear that Clarkson’s pro-British farmer message is getting through to consumers. By highlighting the harsh realities British farmers face, the programme has been able to mobilise consumers to make different choices around where their food comes from. Interestingly, Ocado have “also linked the programme’s focus on regenerative and sustainable farming practices to a steep rise in sales of organic produce” and, here at Borough Broth | B Corp™, we couldn’t be more thrilled. Rosamund Heathcote, founder and MD: “We have always been proudly organic and proudly British. Our incredible farmers are the heart and soul of Borough Broth. They work tirelessly to farm sustainably in a way which not only guarantees the highest standards of animal welfare, but also supports wildlife, helps slow climate change and protects the future of our food.” We’re extremely proud of our farmers and of our products. We’re excited to see that consumers are voting with their feet and moving towards more local and sustainable options. https://lnkd.in/dn5vkRXx

🚀 Revolutionising Food Waste at Tesco 🌿 Exciting news from Tesco! Starting November, they're launching a groundbreaking facility in Northamptonshire that transforms surplus food into animal feed, with the impressive capacity to process 1,000 tonnes each week. 🏭 In collaboration with engineering company RenEco, Tesco's initiative is poised to significantly change how the food industry addresses waste. Focusing on bakery and fresh produce, the facility will also handle surplus meat and fish for pet food. This innovative approach is not just a win for sustainability but also a potential model for other businesses. 🐾 Claire Lorains, Tesco's group quality and sustainability director, emphasised the global importance of reducing food waste and encouraged other companies to join this initiative. With 40% of the facility's capacity dedicated to Tesco's surplus, there's ample space for other manufacturers and retailers to get involved. Together, we can forge a future where food waste is minimised, and resources are maximised. #Sustainability #FoodWaste #TescoInitiative

Monday Morning MOOves in climate and sustainability for leading European food retailer. 1. Lidl GB announced this summer a £1.5 billion five-year investment in their British #Beef supply chain with an aim to invest in #regenerative farming practices and reduce the #scope3 emission intensity by 28% of finished product by 2030. https://lnkd.in/eFV7cvnh 2. This week, Lidl Nederland have launched across all of its stores a new 60/40 minced beef and pea protein product (this new minced beef product is 37.5% lower carbon emissions and a third cheaper than the 100% beef alternative!). Half of Dutch households consume minced beef weekly! So this offers a huge greenhouse gas reduction opportunity (and water use too I would imagine). Furthermore, Lidl have an ambition to reach 60% plant-based for all of its protein sales by 2030. To support this, the retailer is implementing a permanent price reduction across its plant-based protein products ensuring these substitutes for meat and dairy products are always equal or lower cost for the consumer. #sustainableagriculture #sustainablefarming #foodemissions
